The Oval Tavern, Croydon

Second visit to Esther's new venture.Has the Green Dragon vibe which is a good thing.Ales excellent and varied.Reasonably busy for a Wednesday afternoon first time round. If in the area pop-in and support one of the bright stars of the Croydon pub scene.

Williamson's Tavern, Mansion House

Visited on Wednesday. They have a new Boss, and service ok.Agree with previous blogs, service was poor in the past, and the split-bar arrangement does not help. Will visit more often;understand they plan to open 1200-2000 on Saturdays.Always found an interesting pint or two in here,in good condition.

The Magpie, Bishopsgate

A very fine pub.Was made most welcome by Anna, and offered samples of drinks.Having people like her behind the bar is a breath of fresh air.The suits were out in force, but most are friendly and accommodating;they just want a decent pint and chat,in a decent pub.If in the area, make a special effort to try this place out.

Hazelnut Fleurs, Beckenham

Very nice bar, friendly staff and customers.Drink prices are very reasonable, and food is also served.Nice to see that someone has the courage and conviction to open a bar in these difficult times. If in the area give it a go.

Crown, Shirley

Agree with slerpy's comments, but the quality of the real ale is not always as it should be.I wonder if this is down to poor cellar-work,or that the ales d'ont turn around fast enough.Comments please.

The Green Dragon, Croydon

Probably the best pub in central Croydon.Very nice food, and excellent beer range.Attracts a mixture of people, so everyone feels welcome.

The George, Croydon

Polite request.Any pubs in the area selling Ballast Point Calico Amber.Thanks.

The Old Bell, Fleet Street

A poor example of a Nicholson's Pub.

26 Feb 2011 23:06

The Old Thameside Inn, London Bridge

Nice Pub,good selection of beers, but been in twice recently and both times beer was far too warm.Could it be the heat from all those lights?

The George, Croydon

Yet another ordinary Wetherspoons. It makes me laugh to read their corporate magazine.Where are the Managers in these places. Are these pubs the A-Z of the DSS in this sad and wasted country.

The Baltic Fleet, Liverpool

First comment after five and a half years patronage.Found this pub completely by chance,on my first weekend away in liverpool.Went in on the 28.11.09,and was greeted by Wapping rum-flavoured stout.Had several pints, then it was gone,so transferred to Blondie, which was also wonderful. What a gem of an establishment;if only there was one in every Town and City. The best pub in Liverpool, and the Country as a whole.

The Lass O'Gowrie, Manchester

I was once asked to vacate a barstool in this place,by one of the regulars.Did not see any name on the back;however I like this place, very much indeed. It has its regulars, but has something to offer everyone.I like the idea of mini-art expos and all the other querky things on offer. The beer is fine, and always changing;would rather pay more than sip in a Spoons.Lets hope it keeps trying new things.

30 Sep 2009 11:54

The City Arms, Manchester

Agree with previous comments.Tasted several excellent beers and a mild.Lovely to find a real pub, right in the heart of the city.

27 Sep 2009 16:24

The Shipwrights Arms, London Bridge

A pub of great charm:a feature not shared by its Manager or staff.Reasonable selection of beers, but can vary in quality.Well worth a visit,as this type of pub is slowly disappering from the area.

28 Jul 2009 09:07

The Oxford, Manchester

Can take the previous comments on board. No mature drunks this time round.A pub that is obviously part of some sort of chain;like a Goose. Two young female barstaff were putting up a super show;as usual understaffed.Guinness cheap and excellent.Food looked decent as well.A student centred place, but engaging nonetheless. Will give it a go,when visiting the Whitworth gallery.

9 Mar 2009 22:34

Last Orders, Kendal

If ever the RAF are looking for a bomb-range,then this is their man.

25 Jan 2009 23:48

The Shakespeare Inn, Kendal

Have been back a few times.A nice pub, decent beer, interesting customers.Food looks nice to,but haven't tried any. What all towns need,a well-run pub thats moving with the times.

25 Jan 2009 23:46

The Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal

Made a return visit, and soon wished that I hadn't. Only one real ale on sale, and the place had been taken over by the local middle-class mob,one of whom had a little brat by the name of Jasper! There were very young children, running all over the place. The H&S people would have had a field-day.Very nice lass behind the bar,and the beer was excellant, but what happened yesterday, should never be allowed.

18 Jan 2009 13:48

Eric Bartholomew, Morecambe

The usual suspects make up the bulk of the regulars.I was approached by a drunken nutter, who thought I was a gangster;wish these types would confine themselves to talking to the woodwork. Not one of the better spoons, even the Barrow branch leaves this place way behind. This is no reflection on the staff, who as always are poorly lead and understaffed.

21 Dec 2008 15:08

Chieftain Hotel, Morecambe

Very nice traditional pub, something uncommon these days.Well attended when I made my visit. Will try again on my next visit

21 Dec 2008 15:01

The Three Mariners, Lancaster

A gem of a pub.Excellent range of beers and lagers, lovely food at a reasonable price, and friendly interactive customers. It even has a real fire;if in the town, give it a go.

15 Dec 2008 11:40

The Cumberland Inn, Carlisle

Agree with all the other comments.Nice to find a trad. pub in this lovely City.Just imagine what could be,if they served more real ale.I wil always visit this place when in the City.

7 Dec 2008 20:27

The John O'Gaunt, Lancaster

Time changes everything.Once would always make a beeline for this place. It always seemed to do the right things,in its own particular way.Not been in for a good while,so lets hope that whatever changes happen, happen for the best.

4 Dec 2008 20:10

The Furness Railway, Barrow In Furness

Got to challenge my earlier comments.Has improved since Mike took over.Real ales very well presented. With the credit-crunch reducing choice, will doubtless get back to the numbers of the old days.

29 Nov 2008 15:27

The Strawberry, Barrow in Furness

Was always regarded as a youth-club,but now appears to get people of all ages.Does food, and nicely appointed.Give it a go.

29 Nov 2008 15:24

The Brown Cow Inn, Dalton in Furness

A dream of a pub.I believe it is open all day,and serves food most times. Not my local, but always has an excellent range of beers. One of the best pubs in the whole of Furness.

29 Nov 2008 15:19

Sir Richard Owen, Lancaster

I agree with what has been posted.A very nice Wetherspoons, always friendly staff, and well supported.

25 Nov 2008 21:36

Barrow Arms, Barrow in Furness

Amen to the chavs hotel.Do they take DSS tokens?.Maybe they need to build a baby park,so all the poor single women of this town d'ont feel left out.

25 Nov 2008 21:29

Cavendish Arms, Dalton in Furness

Sadly now closed.A pub of great potential.Always got lots of people of different ages and views;so much the better.Hope that one day someone will come along and get the place up and running again, but maybe thats a dream.

25 Nov 2008 21:23

The Red Lion Inn, Dalton in Furness

Last time I visited there was no food;as is the case now.Nice pub,but always full of the same local mafia, who have always made me feel unwelcome and an outsider. They remind me of the arseholes that you used to get down south;and still do.

25 Nov 2008 21:16

O'Neill's, Beckenham

Been going into this place for years.Used to have a vey nice Irish couple as Managers. Can get edgy, but I've never seen any fighting.Best used during the day,or midweek when its quiter.Excellent pint of Guiness,as one would expect.

23 Nov 2008 13:34

The Robert Gillow, Lancaster

Unusual to have a pub appear from another franchise.I've only been in a few times, but it always seems busy.Would appear to have captured some of the older regulars of The John O'Gaunt;so much the better.Beer excellent;food menu interesting.Well done Hydes.

23 Nov 2008 13:25

Merchants, Lancaster

Interesting pub.Caters more for visitors than locals methinks.Wide selection of food;staff seemed friendly.

23 Nov 2008 13:19

The Green Ayre, Lancaster

Now a Lloyd's bar.Much improved, but still the regulars one would associate with the

23 Nov 2008 13:15

Welkin, Liverpool

Staff always hard-working,polite and friendly. This place gets really busy, almost as soon as it opens.I've had many a fine breakfast here, and the beer is of good quality.Suffers from the sheer numbers of punters as do all city wetherspoons pubs;maybe a small increase in prices would be offset by a small increase in staff.

16 Nov 2008 12:31

The Pumphouse, Liverpool

What an improvement.Modern pubs or refurbishments do'nt often go down well with punters, but this place is the bis.Anyone who can remember the place from the past ,can't help but be impressed. The prices seemed ok,and the staff were nice and friendly. It makes a fine stopover,if you are on the way to the nearby Tate.Give it a go.

16 Nov 2008 12:23

The Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal

A very fine place to have a drink.Hav'nt been in when its busy. The pizzas look tempting.

The Grey Friar, Preston

A general point, and not just about this pub.Why don't wetherspoons train their staff to line the bar up ?Its really annoying to wait for service, then have some ignorant chav get served before you. This is a problem in all the wetherspoons I've been in.

13 Nov 2008 20:58

The Miles Thompson, Kendal

Time to stop going on about lack of this and that. This is a quality pub,if you don't like it,go elsewhere;suggest the toilet down the road.Damien and staff have always made me welcome, and the beer is excellent.OK,it gets busy, but that says something about the place. It could be worse, you might wish you lived elsewhere, and end up in Barrow.

8 Apr 2008 00:09

The Shakespeare Inn, Kendal

Glad to hear that the place has a new Bossman.Must give it a try on my next visit. Here from me soon.

10 Mar 2008 21:22

The Sun Hotel and Bar, Lancaster

D'ont be put off by prices, think quality. They sell quality lagers and beer, and every other type of drink you can think off. This has to be one of the finest bars in the North-West.Everyone,keep coming in.

4 Mar 2008 22:37

The Farmers Arms, Barrow In Furness

Once went in this place, when I lived across the road.Have'nt been back since.Must give it a try,a pub like this deserves to be a cracker.Must say that it was unfriendly.

4 Mar 2008 22:22

Victoria Tavern, Barrow in Furness

A pub with great potential, but it has a habit of making newcomers feel unwelcome.Has become a chav's paradise;that would explain all the half-drunken lagers.Female barstaff seem to think that they should be in Girl's Aloud.Maybe a nice nature would be better appreciated.Still worth a visit;suggest the lounge bar.

4 Mar 2008 22:19

Yates's, Barrow In Furness

Went in recently, and impressed.Seems to have most of the old wetherspoons mob.So much the better.Does an excellent pint of Guinness.Give it a go,esp. on saturday.

2 Mar 2008 20:43

The Furness Railway, Barrow In Furness

Not to its original high standards.Seems to be a mentality to drive some of the 'old school' customers away.It would appear that they prefere the chav element instead.Still rather spend the odd hour here, than in some of the local pubs.

2 Mar 2008 20:38

The Duke of Edinburgh Hotel and Bar, Barrow in Furness

Very fine establishment. Can be expensive, but adds class to the area.Always does good business, unlike some of the other watering-holes.

2 Mar 2008 20:26

The Derby Hotel, Barrow In Furness

Apt to get direr.

2 Mar 2008 20:23

The Tipperary, Fleet Street

Greatly improved.
