Brigantes Bar and Brasserie, York

You know you're onto a winner when the first thing you see on the door is a sign saying that hen/stag parties are not admitted - deserves 10/10 just for that. Even better is the looks on the faces of the knuckleheaded yahoos who discover that the place doesn't serve Becks or similar fizzy bottled crap. They even have a beer menu ... truly heaven on earth.

What the place *does* serve is a fantastic range of German and Belgian beers along with a good selection of hand-pulled real ales. No smoking throughout (although that doesn't really matter now) but clean, civilised and quiet, in stark contrast to the other hell-holes on Micklegate.

Serves food which is apparently very good - haven't tried it myself as I was rather preoccupied with the beers. Neither York or (especially) Micklegate deserve an establishment like this, but it truly deserves to succeed and I hope it does.

Fibbers, York

Fibbers is a shadow of its former self - I can remember, not so long ago, that there were actually decent bands there (I remember seeing Ozric Tentacles just after I moved to York - awesome!). Claims to be York's leading music venue are well wide of the mark too.

If you want live music, then head to either Certificate 18 on Gillygate (for the metal/goth crowd) or the Junction on Leeman Road. Or Leeds. If you want decent beer, just about anywhere else in York will do.

Reflex, York

Don't. Just don't.
Usually full of the evolutionary pondscum who inhabit the establishments further up Micklegate, and not helped at all by door staff with negative IQs.

The Terrace, York

Claims to be 'York's Only Sports Lounge' - not so sure about that claim, though ... I'm currently debating whether or not to open a book on how long this place lasts before it is shutdown/refurbished/renamed again.

The Nags Head, York

Chav meat market. Avoid.

KoKo International Bar, York

Formerly the site of the BeerRitz beer shot at the bottom of Goodramgate. Unbelieveable selection of Belgian and German beers (including the mighty Hacker-Pschorr) and a laid-back, attitude free atmosphere.

The owner/landlord is a really nice guy who knows his beer (he might have been the owner of BeerRitz, but can't confirm/deny this)

Good range of beers on tap, plus an amazing range of bottled beer and a totally mind-blowing array of single-malt whiskys (many cask-strength, too!)

Good views of York Minster, assuming the weather is good, and top-notch beer and service make this one a winner.

The Slug and Lettuce, York

Has now been resurrected as a 'Slug and Lettuce'. It's still crap ...

The Evil Eye Lounge, York

I swear to God the service in this place gets worse ... the miserable cow who usually works in the off license needs to learn a couple of things, most notably i) she's paid to serve customers, not faff around with her phone and read Vogue while the punters are queuing back into the bar and ii) the meaning of the words 'customer service'

I've said it before and I'll say it again: great food (especially recommend their Asian menu, if you can stand the interminable and inevitable wait) and good selection of drinks let down by piss-poor service and staff attitude.

The Rose and Crown, York

Went back into the Rose & Crown recently - hasn't changed a bit, although I do hear disturbing rumours that the landlord may be going back to Oz - that would be a real shame, especially if it spells the demise of the 'Aussie Burger'

The Capital, York

Has been shut down and is being refurbished. Again.

Victor J's Art Bar, York

Everything that anonymous (below) says is right - definitely giving the Evil Eye Lounge some competition for the 'Worst Service in the Known Universe Award'

The Budvar Dark is nice though ...

The Royal Oak, Copmanthorpe

Has recently been refurbished and I think it's now owned by the same people who own the Ship in Acaster Malbis. Whether this is a good thing remains to be seen.

The Terrace, York

Has now been reopened and still looks as empty as it did before. Go figure ...

The Three Legged Mare, York

Ah, the Wonkey Donkey - despite being a York Brewery pub it does actually sell an impressive range of guest beers and has an impressive selection of bottles as well (including Chimay, hic!). Better still, despite being in the centre of York and a spit from the Minster, it doesn't get stupidly busy.

Given that it sells a fantastic selection of Belgian (and some German) beer, that's enough to get two thumbs up from me ;-)

Oscars Wine Bar, York

Nothing special on the drinks front - Fosters/Stella/yadada, but definitely a place to eat *if* you can find somewhere to sit - the central location means it gets stupidly packed at weekends, and don't even think about going there on race days.

I can heartily recommend their 'Muchos Nachos' and for those who think they can put their food away, you've got to have the 'Mountain Burger' (I had trouble and I'm no lightweight ;-) )

The Evil Eye Lounge, York

This is always a bone of contention between myself and my girlfriend - she loves the place and I hate it.

Why do I hate it despite the fact that it does an excellent range of drinks and above average food? Simple - the service is truly, absolutely *dreadful*, even during quiet times.

Should be visited at least once, but be prepared for a long, LONG wait for service.
