The Coach and Horses, Salisbury

Interesting to read the comments of Roqwise above - we visited this pub on Sunday 11th August 2013....we too had a most unfriendly greeting by the landlady. The only reason we stayed was that we were meeting family there by arrangement (it looked nice online!). Even on paying our bill at the end (almost £100) her attitude was far from acceptable. We will NEVER visit this place again.

The Watering Hole, Perranporth

Re-visited this spectacular pub on June 6th 2011 (had been once before two years ago). Still a really good place to visit - good beer and we had a very good lunch - reasonable prices, good food and very quick service. Altogether a very positive visit (and WHAT a view!) but one negative: we left to go on a long walk with the dog. When we came back 2 hours later the remains of our lunch were still on the table. A seagull had clearly helped itself and spread our dips all over the table and seats. A very poor slip up that marred an otherwise excellent visit.

The White Rose, Mumbles

Cheap beer and service to match....in other words impersonal and in fact the only indifferent welcome we received in our week there. Busy (because of the prices, I guess) but not exactly a choice bunch of guys (in some cases). For those of you who know Southampton.....this is the Standing Order of The Mumbles.

I hate being critical, but for all the attributes of this pub there was a lot that made me feel negative. Shame - from the outside it looks good.

The Famous Bear, Mumbles

June 2010 - closed and boarded up. Off putting sight, really. Sad

The Pilot, Mumbles

We got a really warm welcome from the staff and the regulars.....even despite a few friendly digs about England's football team! We went several times and will visit again some time. It is unpretentious and quite plain - but that is often a good thing.

Great view from the front.

We liked it.

Salt at the George, Mumbles

Smart - more a caf-bar than a pub really. Friendly welcome and food reasonably priced and good quality, especially for lunch snacks. Good view from the terrace upstairs although it doesn't get the sun.

We liked it, and as we were staying next door went in quite a bit. Thumbs up!

Bold Forester, Marchwood

The Bold Forester has now re-opened after an extensive refit, so the negative comments on here are now inappropriate and redundant. Great food every day and a, excellent quiz at 8.30 every Thursday evening.

Bold Forester, Marchwood

THE BOLD FORESTER WILL BE CLOSING FOR THREE WEEKS AT THE END OF FEBRUARY FOR A COMPREHENSIVE REFIT.

Bold Forester, Marchwood

The refit for this pub is now scheduled for later this month.

The place does need attention, it's true, but some of the comments here are very harsh. Personally I think the Sunday carvery is great. Oh, the Thursday night quiz is brilliant - really unmissable.

The Ship Inn, Polperro

Went there a couple of times in June 2009. The staff could not have been friendlier or more welcoming. Good beer / wine and a very good Thursday night quiz.

Recommended.

The Old Mill House Inn, Polperro

My wife and I were staying close by (june 2009) and had heard that there was a pub quiz here on Tuesdays. So we went there on Tuesdays....and almost every other day too!

Great quiz....good beer and wine....and astonishingly cheap menu where several main courses were priced at 2.50p each!!! No, that is not a misprint....and for the cynics, we tried two of them out. They were large portions and very well prepared and presented.

A very good pub and a high-point of our week.

Only comment....for heaven's sake guys, tidy the garden up. A real mess, frankly, when it could and should be a real feature.....and costs you a point here.

But other than that.....very good, friendly. Oh, and you can get on the internet there too.

Thumbs up!

David and Jan, Southampton.

PS - the cat traumatised our dog!!

The Noughts and Crosses, Polperro

I was staying within 50 yards and dropped by on first evening - upon which a youth having a smoking break outside allowed his (untethered) staffie dog to terrorise my (tethered) spaniel and when I expressed my concern I was told that 'He should have let it rip your ****ing throat out".

I decided not to visit again.....and an acquaintance I met in another pub said the tables were sticky with dirt.

I would say though that I did NOT witness the previously mentioned mobs of unruly people all around the outside.

The Blue Peter, Polperro

I found the outside to be disappointing....the steel huts and portable toilets outside rather spoil the approach! But the atmosphere inside the bar was tremendous - characterful and welcoming. Very friendly staff - including welcoming the dog with treats - and good beer, I liked it a lot even though the views of the harbour were restricted. Would certainly re-visit.

Bold Forester, Marchwood

That should read 50p per head in the quiz - not 5p!!!!

Bold Forester, Marchwood

Bold Forester Marchwood has a good pub quiz on Thursday evenings.....8.30pm, 5p a head to enter. General knowledge, entertainment, history. pictures.......and also a snowball at the end (1 per entry) where some of the pot is won each week and the rest grows and grows. Come along and try it....the quiz is presented by 'Weakest Link' winner David Morris.

The pub is under new management and Jim & Jenny are working hard to give the place a great new feel.

The Shipwrights, Padstow

My wife and I visit Padstow regularly and this is our favourite pub. It is not a 'purists' pub, I know (try the Golden Lion or the London) but if you like good beer, nice staff (landlord is a good guy) and perfectly decent (but not posh) food then it's great. If you can get a space outside (on the town side of the pub, overlooking the harbour) in summer it's delightful.

The Lord Nelson, Hythe

This is a very varied and great pub catering for everybody. It is nonsense to say football is on all the time in every bat (would be difficult - no TV in one of them) and the back bar leading onto the gatrden (overlooking the water) is lovely. Yes there are some roughish customers but only a small proportion - and they are no trouble in practice. The locals won the Radio Hampshire quiz 2008 - well done us!!

Give it a try for heaven's sake - whatever your type of pub you'll find a bar to suit you here.

Croft Tavern, Hythe

Monday night quiz is terrific (good old Pete Allen)

The Atlantic Inn, Porthleven

Visited just once in our week - to be honest was put off by the smell in the bar. Has the smoking ban been implemented here? If so then needs a good wash and brush up - and tidy up inside. Would hesitate before going again. Sorry... maybe we were unlikely.

The Ship Inn, Porthleven

Great, great pub - good atmosphere, fascinating odds and sods around the walls/ceilings, friendly staff. Food far too expensive for us (little in the way of quick snacks) but lovely place and location. Highly recommended and very much a traditional, purists pub with great views from inside and from the garden.

Harbour Inn, Porthleven

My wife and I visited several times during the week commencing 14th June 2008. Good modern day pub - nice enough venue with mos cons such as quiz machines etc. Ate outside by the harbour once - chose it because the other options seemed so expensive. Had two straightforward meals - nothing fancy - and they were very good.....with outstandingly quick service even though they had a wedding reception going on inside. Also went to the quiz on Thursday evening - great fun (though a rather dour presenter). For the non-arty-farty types an overall good pub (see also my comments on Atlantic Inn and Ship Inn). For the purists I can see that it wouldn't suit, but I liked it.
