The White Hart Tap, St Albans

Nice little gem, just a little off the beaten track in St Albans.

Arrived too late to sample the main food unfortunately but the Scotch Eggs were excellent.

They have quite a selection of American beers but I went for the local brew "Sidepocket for a toad" and they went down very well.

Staff were friendly and efficient, good mix of customers - including a dog that wasn't impressed with the accordion player and tried to join in :-)

8/10

The Blue Posts, Piccadilly

A real gem for central London .... a proper pub with real people as customers and staff. My first time there was the other night (went for the comedy upstairs) and arrived a little early so sat at a table and had some food. The food is unpretentious and good value, the beer (TT Landlord) well kept and the atmosphere was such that I would definitely go there again rather than one of the noisy tourist traps that surround the area. Gave this place 8 - might have gone to 9 but reserve that high a score for repeat visits

The Two Brewers, Street

Stayed here recently and was very pleased with every aspect of our stay.

The food was good value, the beer tasted pretty good and the staff were friendly and helpful despite being quite busy.

Definitely recommend it if you are in the area

Ye Olde Red Lion, Hemel Hempstead

Called in recently but the pub was being redecorated so held back on commenting until the work was done.

A very tasteful job has been done (in my opinion). The staff were cheerful and the clientelle pleasant. There was a 'jam session' in progress and the music was definitely worth listening to - not too loud (does that mean I'm getting old).

The Bombadier was off so I had a couple of Young's and was very pleased with the quality. Unfortunately i arrived late due to delays on the train so missed the food, but since I'll be going back I will have plenty of opportunity to try it in the future.

The Oddfellows Arms, Hemel Hempsted

Very pleasant little pub, fair selection of beer and smiling happy staff.... but in my opinion a place for locals rather than somewhere to travel to.

The Parlour Bar, Canary Wharf

Too cramped, too expensive, too noisy and ran out of the only ale at 9 o'clock on a Thursday...

but then this is Canary Wharf where your average punter wouldn't know class if it slapped them in the face

... definitely won't be going back to this place again.

PS. If you do go avoid the ridiculously dangerous chairs ... accidents waiting to happen in my opinion

The Hobgoblin, Marylebone

Firstly - this pub has been renamed as WOOD .... understandable given the decor which is decidedly woody

I felt that the atmosphere was quite sterile, but maybe that was me.

The ale (WANDLE) was good and the Thai food very good, and if I was in the area and wanted somewhere I'd go back but overall I don't think I would go out of my way to return ....

Paper Mill, Hemel Hempstead

Fine beer, fine food, great location and helpful, friendly staff.

Recently witnessed a barmaid giving excellent personal advice on choice of wine to accompany a meal - and a taster for the customer to decide

Royal Oak, Bovingdon

I have to say that this pub seems to be going from strength to strength.

The beers are consistently good; there is always something interesting to eat and the staff are very attentive without being overbearing....

.. and at this time of year the open fire is very welcome :-)

The Swan Hotel, Staines

Beer was OK ... food was OK .... both were expensive but I guess we were paying for location as well.

Staff were for the most part on the ball but at one point the manager did have a bit of a rant at one of them in front of the customers which I thought was extremely unprofessional.

The Fox, Hanwell

Visited here after a long day on the river and canals ..... clearly a popular pub with locals as there were several gathered around the bar enjoying some friendly banter.

The beer was OK and got better as the night progressed (isn't that always the way). We were there on Curry Night and I have to say that the Lamb Biryani was excellent.

The staff were friendly to a group that were clearly passing through and helped us enjoy a well earned break.

The Old Fountain, Old Street

Made a special trip to visit here on a Sunday afternoon - waste of time as its only open Monday to Friday :-(((((

The Eagle, Hoxton

Arrived on a sunny Sunday afternoon and was surprised at the size of the crowd milling around the door - I thought it must have been very busy inside - but no, just two people indoors escaping the heat.

Settled for a pint of cider which was served quickly by a friendly barman then we sat outside. I thought the decor was ecelectic and welcoming but I have no idea how the pub woudl be if it was busy. Will probably pop in again some evening for a proper pint.

The Half Moon, Putney

Trekked out to deepest darkest Putney the other night for a gig at The Half Moon and was pleasantly surprised at the location .... decent pints of Youngs & Tribute (albeit a lil pricey), fair food (gravy could have been a little thicker but that was more than made up for by the fab onion rings) and most of all very pleasant staff.

Full marks to the barmaid who realised that she had short changed me and brought the fiver over to our table even though I hadn't noticed !!!

The only problem with this pub is that it's too far away to visit regularly.

The Anchor, Southwark

I was dreading going here the other night after the reviews - especially as I was meeting a large group of people.

Geared up to expect a long wait for poor beer I was pleasantly surprised to be served as quickly as I was (less than 3 minutes wait) and the London Pride was very acceptable. There were 3 or 4 other ales on tap but as I wasn't staying long I wasn't able to sample them this time.

Yes it is busy but the staff were as efficient as many and more so than some

11 Jun 2010 11:44

The Hole In The Wall, Waterloo

I've been coming here on and off for 15 years or so and I still really can't make my mind up about this pub.

Yes its convenient to Waterloo so easy to arrange for people to meet but in some ways it is too close to Waterloo so it get packed until the commuters head off .....

.... but becuase it's packed you know the beer turns over quickly and you aren't likely to get a bad pint. (always had a good pint).

Was here on a Friday recently and coudln't find a seat at 6:30 but by 7 the crowd had thinned out and was comfortable - then by 9 there was a single large group that almost took over every seat in the place.... but it was still a great atmosphere.

Overall worth a 7 .... the food wasn't bad either

Ye Olde Watling, Mansion House

It's the run up to Xmas and the pub was quite busy - no standing room inside but fortunately a mild evening so we were well able stand outside - despite that the service was very prompt and the beer was good. In keeping with tradition (trying the strangest named beer on offer) I had a couple of Rudolph's Rewards and was very pleased.

The atmosphere is welcoming and the food good value. Definitely worth another visit when its a bit quiter

The Green Dragon, Flaunden

Brilliant fusion of traditional country pub and innovative menu.

I've been here quite a few times recently and the atmosphere is just right. the beer is always well kept even if the range is limited ... But so what - I'd rather know I was going to get a decent pint than have to be adventurous.

The food is good value (and yes the Thai can be on the hot side).

Royal Oak, Bovingdon

This village green pub has undergone several changes over the years but I think that this incarnation is the one that will work. It's now a bright open space with a welcoming staff. The food is pretty good and the beer well cared for.

Well worth a visit

23 Aug 2009 11:49

The Cockpit, Blackfriars

I was in here yesterday evening to meet a mate and was reasonably impressed.

The beer on tap was pretty good, the atmosphere quite welcoming and overall managed to pass a couple of very pleasant hours.

Disappointed that there was no food available (not even the famous Scotch Eggs).

Its a good pub to know about for when you are in the are but not one that I think I would make a special trip to visit.

(7/10)

15 Jul 2009 14:28

The Lyceum, Strand

Passed a very pleasant evening here last night with some old friends.

Its a quiet old fashioned pub serving a good pint of OBB at a very reasonable price (1.88).

I didn't eat here this time but in the past the food has been excellent value.

We were impressed with the bar maid who was cheerful all night and even took the time come around the tables to announce last orders

21 Apr 2009 14:18

The George and Vulture, Hoxton

I was looking forward to a night here to listen to the music and enjoy a few pints ......

... the beer was fine and the food certainly looked and smelt good ...

BUT the music was somewhat spoiled by some customers that were more interested in talking loudly than listening to the music.

If the management want this to be taken seriously as a music venue they might want to consider levying a small entrance fee so people know that the music is important.

20 Mar 2009 00:02

The Castle, Harrow On The Hill

This is a solid pub with a choice of bars to eat and drink ....

The beer has always been up to scratch and the food is excellent - I can thoroughly recommend the meatballs in flatbread .. and the accompanying chips are the real thing rather than stringy fries.

This place is full of atmosphere and away from the beer halls of Harrow town centre so is perfect for a civilised pint

Case is Altered, Old Redding

I guess this place is due for a new report.... especially as it appears to be under new management.

The choice of beer has improved significantly with at least 2 and often three guest ales on offer (along with some lagers and a particularly nice cider).

It seems that the new management are trying to improve the food on offer and have set some space aside for diners - while leaving plenty of space for people who 'just' want to have a drink.

The serving area at the bar is still quite small but the friendly staff do get through the queue quite quickly if it builds up...

I can see this becoming a regular haunt especially as I can justify visiting after a stroll around the common to work upa thirst.

The Duck in the Pond, Harrow

Come here quite often for a quiet pint ...

... the beer is usually pretty good ... had the guest ale the other night (Bah Humbug - no thats not a comment on the quality it's what it was called) and was pleased enough to have a second.

On the ocassions I have eaten there the food has always been acceptable and the steak on grill night is excellent value.

On occasion the service can be a bit slow but I've never felt like going anywhere else because of it.

22 Dec 2008 16:34

The Horse and Groom, Belgravia

Yep - well kept beer; excellent grub and a happy staff ... what more can you want .... but please keep this place a secret

1 Dec 2008 15:17

The Windermere, South Kenton

We received a warm welcome on a cold night both from the barman and the open fire.

The beer - London Pride - was perfectly acceptable but the decor does need a little bringing up to date. But having said that I'm sure the regular customers are happy - it is a clean and well kept local.

Would not avoid this if I was in the area again

1 Dec 2008 13:54

The Cat and Fiddle, Radlett

Superb pub ...

.. attentive staff
... fine ale
.... excellent food

Great atmosphere

30 Oct 2008 09:51

The Baring, Hoxton

This is definitely my favourite pub in the area - and probably London.

The problem with the food is what to have - everything is soo good.... on ocassion we have had two meals and shared becuase we couldn't choose.

The staff are always cheerful and helpful.

The beer is excellent ...

..... and as for the quiz it has to be the best pub quiz I've ever been to (and I have been to quite a few)

15 Oct 2008 10:52

The Spanish Arch, Harrow

The Arch is my local so I am a little biased butI have been going there since I was a young lad (not quite in short pants) but I always find a welcome there.

OK there is no real ale but what is there is well kept.

The staff are invariably friendly, the music usually good and the food excellent.

Keep it up

13 Oct 2008 13:17

The Fighting Cocks, St Albans

Popped in here on a sunny Sunday afternoon in October.... unsurprisingly the pub was busy but we found a table.

The atmosphere was excellent. The beer was OK - Black Sheep & Abbott - and when we ordered food the cheerful staff said we would be waiting over an hour.

A hour later we enquired as to progress and the barman came to our table to give us an update. Excellent service on a busy afternoon.
