The Essex Arms, Stratford

This is now a pound shop.

The Smith and Western, Boxhill

The food here is pretty mediocre, the chilli isn't hot, they can't cook a steak and the chicken burger we had was dry. The price you pay you expect something decent, and don't ask me about their nachos - what a pile of shit. No flavour to the chilli, no guacamole, it was a chore to eat. If you enjoy the food here you'd be better off going back to eating Iceland meat pies and tripe, it will be significantly cheaper. Plus it's 15 quid for a 4 bottle of wine. Service was pretty piss-poor, and all.

The Loaded Dog, Leytonstone

Now run by the previous tenants at the Colgrave Arms, everyone's decamped. Apparently they've stuck a flat in the bit that used to be the stage. Selection of lagers, I went in to have a look when they just reopened so was a tad unfinished. Pool table.

The Plough and Harrow, Leytonstone

Changed owners recently and they've spruced it up - now serve ok Thai food. Lager is what you drink here, no ale. Karaoke on Friday nights.

The King Charles I, Kings Cross

Landlord is a psychopath - challenged me to a fight over a flippant comment. Do not visit - he tried to strangle me

The Eagle, Hoxton

This pub suffers from poor quality bar staff who, not being a bigot, are foreign and not the good foreign ones. They can't pour pints and have a somewhat surly attitude. The quality's not that great, either. It does however smell very strongly of bacon due to the neighbouring cop shop. Paranoid people may wish to go elsewhere.

The Bell, Leytonstone

Reasonably friendly pub, some ok beer on (think it was Bombadier) mostly lager on tap. Pool table and plenty of space.

The Goldengrove, Stratford

One of the bad Wetherspoons - scruffy, tattered and dingy. Bar staff would fit in well as extras in The Hills Have Eyes. Beer was bad and little choice.

The Cart And Horses, Stratford

Popular with the Bulgarians. Claims to be the home of Iron Maiden, although this appears to be disputed. Despite there being other pumps, as it was two years ago it still is now, if you want a pint, it's Kronenbourg. Barmaid looks about ready to slit her wrists although the landlord seems all right. It's fairly empty during the week. If sorted his beer out maybe more people would go.

The Bavarian Beerhouse, Shoreditch

This place is rubbish, the service is table service so you're forever dying of thirst as you desperately wait for some airhead to finish counting on her fingers and get on with her job. It's expensive yet cramped inside and the music is awful. Frequented by braying office drones, although you'll not hear them over the shite being blasted out the speakers.

The Prince Albert, Southwark

Steer clear of the beer here, stick to lager. Don't know what 99p was saying about trying hard, landlord looked and behaved like someone had shat through his letter box. Doleys and brickies mostly.

The Walnut Tree, Leytonstone

As Wetherspoons pubs go this is above average. You will get served, you get the correct change and it's open til 12/1 when it needs to be. You'll not get the creme de la creme of society but the beer is cheap and I think the locals are reasonably friendly, if a little salt of the earth types. It's not as minty as, say, the one in Barking and the service is miles better than the one in East Ham. It serves a decent pint of real beer cheaply. It ain't the Ritz.

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

Excellent beer, many hand pumps. Also has cider. Slightly "traditional" in decor and clientele.

The Artillery Arms, Old Street

Good pint of ESB. Landlord a bit of an arse (no loud beer chatting!). Must have changed the bar staff as the serving mong was fairly capable but then it wasn't hugely crowded. Adequate supply of crisps. En route to the tube/station if you are fleeing the ants' nest. Frequented by suits and lawyers. Plenty of famous stiffs in the next door boneyard.

Millers Well, East Ham

Service here is truly awful, barmaids fail to keep track of who's next, are incredibly slow and can't pull pints to save their lives. Sparklers on the beer pumps don't help with a frothy head, either.
