The Raven, Bath

The Raven is an excellent small pub with good selection of fine ales and - most importantly - scrumptious pies at a good price!

It was Sunday evening in Bath. A girl in a cafe had recommended a pub that served food. When we arrived at said pub, a man approached us on the street and asked us if we where looking to eat good pub food. We said we where looking for pies and gravy and he highly recommended The Raven - for this, I thank him deeply.

The Raven serves a selection of fantastic crusty pies with a choice of rich gravies, with either mash or chips for only £8.80 each. We both had a steak pie, with mash, one with Guiness and onion gravy and the other with thyme and red wine gravy.

Both pies where exceptionally good; densely packed with meat and vegetables. The gravies where distinctly different but both excellent and the mash was perfect - lumpy and bumpy, with a real earthy taste - yet still smooth and light.

The Raven had a wide selection of real ales, largers and ciders. They carry local beverages as well.

In terms of the atmosphere, the Raven hit the nail on the head. Dark, warm and friendly - with lots of places to sit and chat. The staff where friendly and helpful too.

If I'm ever in Bath again - I'll be sure to visit The Raven. Recommended.

The Royal Oak, Bath

One of the best pubs in Bath, with a great selection Butts and Downton plus guest ales (and I believe guest ciders, though don't quote me on that, I'm not much of a cider drinker) and the owner and his wonderful dogs are wonderfully friendly.

A true classic pub, for someone looking for just that!

The Hop Pole, Bath

This is one of the best pubs we found in Bath for food. Really nice little pub. 5 beers from Bath Ales. Great location and enclosed beer garden.

Sandford Park Ale House, Cheltenham

Everything a good pub should be - comfy and relaxed atmosphere. U-shaped main bar area wraps around a new timber staircase with a Bar Billiards table at far end. Small front Snug room and large south facing beer garden. Up to seven guest ales (with Oakham Ales a feature) with a good selection of ciders and foreign beers. Tried Oakham Citra, Purity Mad Goose and Wye Valley Butty Bach, all good so this was very pleasing!

The Royal Oak, Prestbury

We made two visits to this pub while staying nearby, it is a lovely pub, they serve 4 top quality real ales and deserves better credit. The restaurant in a separate bar serves delicious freshly cooked meals which are also good value.

Service was a little slow on our second visit, but it was Saturday night! And the food was worth the wait.

The Feathers Hotel, Ludlow

Warm friendly welcome at the bar. Very comfortable and relaxed. Only three ale, but told all are local, and we found them excellent. Didn't eat here but food looked good. Didn't know Ludlow so thanks to BITE reviewers we found the place.

The Queens, Ludlow

Following BITE reviews, tried the Queens, not knowing Ludlow. Beer was good, staff pleasant, prices reasonable. Can't really tell if this place is more pub or restaurant with bar though.

The Church Inn, Ludlow

Good selection of ale, we particularly liked the Wye Valley. Service wasn't great, with long delays and staff chatting. Found it a bit noisy, but welcoming. Place feels more a blokes booze. Worth finding though.
