The Taps, Lytham St Annes

Top visit yesterday. Great lunch. Brilliant advert for how beer should be kept & served. Alittle disappointed about the choice on offer but thats life.

6 Mar 2011 19:08

Ship and Royal, Lytham St Annes

Similar number of beers on offer as my last visit - 4 from 12 handpumps. Having said that 2 of the 4 upon ordering were out of service at that moment (Lines being cleared or something!)
Ordered a very watery tasting Marstons EPA.
Will stick to the Taps in future

6 Mar 2011 19:04

The Hastings Club, Lytham St. Annes

A disappointing visit yesterday. Majority of people in the front bar area were just drinking.
Boring Beer choice (Thwaites Original & Bomber + Moorhouses Pride Of Pendle) on the handpumps. The bottle selection was A1 but now more Z1..... and totally overpriced. 12.60 for 3 bottles of Tap7 Schneider Weisse - which out of interest is usually priced at 3 bottles for 5 in Morrisons (Glad It wasn't my round!)

6 Mar 2011 19:02

The County Hotel, Lytham

Visited yesterday. All handpumps in use with a few beers from nearby Lytham Berewery. Having said that the beers tried all tasted the same (Apple skin was the general consensus) but had different appearances!
There are better pubs on the Fylde coast but alot more worse pubs

Thomas Drummond, Fleetwood

As reviewed before and still maintaining it's high standards.

One of the best Wetherspoons there is around

12 Nov 2010 16:50

The Pump and Truncheon, Blackpool

Back to having 3 beers on handpump. Usually 2 regular (ish) beers in Acorn Barnsley Bitter & A Copper Dragon with a changing guest. A very drinkable 3 Bees beer called bee thrifty on my recent visit.
Worth a port of call in Blackpool's Real Ale Desert.

12 Nov 2010 16:48

Albert and The Lion, Blackpool

Further to my previous review.
This place has got worse instead of better. Just one bar staff on trying to serve "large ish" presense at the bar
Today's visit yielded just one handpump in use, and that was in fact a cider.
So much for the biggest beer festival on the planet that Wetherspoons is supposed to holding at present.
This pub must be a contender to be the WORST WETHERSPOONS IN THE COUNTRY.

12 Nov 2010 16:42

Blue Room, Blackpool

This pub has had more names than I care to remember. Still the same layput though. Bit rocky in appearance. Plenty of pub activities and a decent juke box.
4 Handpumps on show, 2 ales that looked unexciting (Hobgoblin & Bombardier) and 2 ciders (Old Rosie & something else).
Things went a bit haywire after 2 pints of the Old Rosie. Though seem to remember a few odd characters populating the pub. Firstly some guy trying to hussle us while playing pool - he couldn't understand why we weren't playing for money between ourselves! n became upset when we wouldn't play him for money.
There was another chap who looked like he needed a good wash (smelt that way too) and seemed to hover near anyone playing the fruit machines.

11 Aug 2010 05:21

Washington, Blackpool

This place is a pub but it thinks it is something else more...but what I don't know.
Plenty of people eating.
The beer was disgusting. Three beers advertised on the bar but only one in use. Smelt and tasted of vinegar - which were replaced with more pints of the same vinegar. A twit behind the bar tried to explain that Green King IPA is supposed to taste like that......

11 Aug 2010 05:12

Churchills Bar, Blackpool

As the previous post says " one of the better real ale pubs in Blackpool".
In central Blackpool yes I agree but there isn't much competition. Called in recently as the neighbouring Gillespies for shut for a refurb. Busy pub and friendly. Ale on our visit was poor - only Spitfire on which we visited which was awful and unfinishable.

11 Aug 2010 05:05

Albert and The Lion, Blackpool

Perhaps I was expecting too much....
Too small for a Wetherspoons outlet, especially when slap bang in the centre of Blackpool & under the Tower. Was heaving on our visit, about 4or5 deep at the bar with only 2 staff serving (3 if you included the manager type who served one person then disappeared out the back for a few minutes then returned, served one then disappeared etc) on a Friday late afternoon/early evening. There wasn't anywhere to sit. There were empty tables but not enough chairs!
Similar to its sister outlet on Lytham Road for it's ale policy. 12 handpumps on show, all bar 4 had available soon on! The ale tried was flat and not at its best.
I know it is only early doors for this new pub. Will visit again, perhaps may be better when the season curtails later in the year.

11 Aug 2010 04:57

The Keelman, Newburn

Out of the way Brew Pub. The Big Lamp Brewery is next door. Clean & comfortable. Plenty of outdoor seating.
Serve, I presume, the full range range of Big Lamp Beers. The SummerDaze & Prince Bishop were very good. Decent pub lunch menu and sandwiches tried were very good.
Very busy on our visit. As a result took a while to get served at the bar - though not helped by the waitress service offered to people inside as they seemed to get priority over the people stood at the bar.
Was well worth the visit & will visit again.

11 Aug 2010 04:46

Owd Nell's Tavern, Bilsborrow

One of those places you either love or hate.
As previous people have commented this pub can suffer from it's popularity. Can get full to bursting often - particularly if the sun is out etc.
Have actually started visiting more often recently because the ales are bang on form. Usually 8-10 ales on - Thwaites Wainwright, Moorhouses PendleWitch, Black Sheep are the usual Regular beers with guests from far and wide also appearing.
Decent pub grub is on offer. The Mussels washed down with a few pints are recommended.
Usually "special" events take place monthly - Oyster Festival In September, A Hallowen Octobier Fest etc.
Opens late most nights I think - was in the other Sunday night and time passed us by. At 2315 thinking we had missed last orders, were told they were open until at least 0100!!!

20 Jul 2010 05:24

The Waterhouse, Manchester

One of,if not,the best Wetherspoons pubs around.
Great beer selection usually.

20 Jul 2010 05:14

The Cask Bar, Castlefield

Visited this little bar on a couple of occasions recently. Found to serve 2 ales - both usually from the same brewer. On both visits the Phoenix & Abbeydale beers were in good order. Good foreign beer/lager selection.
Good atmosphere & friendly staff.

20 Jul 2010 05:10

The Furness Railway, Barrow In Furness

Popped in recently whilst had an hour between connecting trains. Reminds me of mylocal Wethers in Fleetwood. Open early n busy with 'morning boozers'!
Decent selection of beers on, The Phoenix Black Shadow was very good. Seemed to be a full selection of ales on.
Apparently killip_ian alot of micro breweries such as the ones in Cumbria have a problem with Wethers selling their beers.

I would say one of the better Wethers.

5 Jun 2010 05:35

The Trawl Boat Inn, Lytham St Annes

Not the best Wethers but hardly the worst.
Visited last week. Seemed to be having a Wentworth Brewery showcase,as all barone handpump had their beers on. Several tried, some were ok some weren't.
The Oatmeal Stout being the best & the WPA undrinkable.

Worth another look

5 Jun 2010 05:27

Black Cock Inn, Broughton-in-Furness

Visited recently along with visits to the Prince Of Wales & Manor Arms, which are both excellant. However, not knocking the Black Cock but there isn't much right with this place ....but thereisn't much wrongwith it either.
This Inn is a cross between a pub and a restaurant - like the owners can't decide which road to go down.
The ales on offer were well kept but all were from Lancashire & one from Yorkshire. Will visit again.

5 Jun 2010 05:23

The Manor Arms, Broughton in Furness

Great location in the centre of the 'town' square. Vast selection of ales from far and wide. The Yates' Bee's Knees was in particularly excellant.
Friendly staff & locals.

5 Jun 2010 05:18

The Prince of Wales, Foxfield

Possibly one of the best pubs in the UK.
Great beer. Great homecooked pies/pasties. Great people, very friendly.
Just a great place.
A must visit pub

5 Jun 2010 05:14

Thomas Drummond, Fleetwood

The best place for ale in the North Fylde Peninsular.

5 Jun 2010 05:09

Gillespies, Blackpool

Under new management. Real ale has been introduced, though the choice is limited to Greene King Products! The ales though are kept very well though despite the "poorish" choice. Landlord is working on having a guest ale or two of his own choice on in the future.
Lively bar especially pre concerts/events at the Winter Gardens.
Worth a look

5 Jun 2010 05:02

The Watermill Inn, Ings

Excellant pub just outside Windermere.
16 Handpumps serve a vast array of beers. Several from the onsite Watermill Brewery - Collie Wobbles is very good.
Food is very good. Reasonable accomadation is available.
The pub is dog friendly in the left hand bar.
One of the best around.

16 Apr 2010 05:09

The County Hotel, Lytham

Large imposing pub.
Has a few handpumps but not all in use. Ales come from far and wide. Like the Ship & Royal, never had a bad pint here but never had a good one here either.

16 Apr 2010 04:17

Ship and Royal, Lytham St Annes

Pub has 12handpumps but only 4 or5 beers available. One from Hart brewery usually.
Never had a badpint but never had a particularly goodone here either.

16 Apr 2010 04:15

The Hastings Club, Lytham St. Annes

More of a restaurant feel nowadays but can go in for a drink in the front part.
The food is excellant but a touch pricey - bookings usually required.
4 real ales on (Lytham beer a house beer and Blonde Witch from Moorhouses the other regular). Ales usually wellkept but served in a very strangely shaped glass!
The bottle beer selection is A1.. the St Sylvester Tres Monts is fantastic.

16 Apr 2010 04:13

Crown Posada, Newcastle

Excellant vintage pub, small long and thin !
5 or 6 beers on,all from local breweries. All tried over a few visits last weekend were excellant ( Durham White Gold & Wylam Gold Tankard in particular). The ales sold very well, noted 13 different beers when I visited last weekend that made an appearance.
Friendly staff and customers.

15 Apr 2010 05:47

The Bacchus, Newcastle

Very busy pub when I visited last weekend. Good selection of beers, only one local brew (Jarrow Rivet Catcher) rest were from far and wide.
Ales tried were well kept.
Food looked interesting but only served at lunchtime.

15 Apr 2010 05:42

The Thatched House, Poulton Le Fylde

Overtaken by the Town Hall as best pub in Poulton for beer quality.
Still has the best selection of beers on but the selection tends to be of 6/7 beers of the same 4-4.5% ilk ( pale/golden beers).

27 Mar 2010 04:53

The Old Town Hall, Poulton Le Fylde

Been attending here quite alot recently. The ale is consistently good - usually a Copper Dragon beer on. Plenty of tv's for sports fans, excellant juke box. Also a decent band are on most Saturday nights.

Best pub in Poulton at the minute.

27 Mar 2010 04:50

The Pump and Truncheon, Blackpool

Gone to the pits really recently. 3 beers on last week, yet despite the "landlord" praising the beers all were past there best...... having said that all 3 tasted and looked the same..........

27 Mar 2010 04:43

The Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield

First visit a couple of weeks ago tied in with the football. Some excellant ales tried (Abbeydale Deception & Amber Ales Imperial IPA in particular). Though several handpumps out of use due to the upcoming St Patricks beer festival the following night. Friendly pub.
Will sniff out again.

27 Mar 2010 04:39

The Devonshire Cat, Sheffield

First visit a coupleof weeks ago while visiting for the football. Handy pub near to Brammall Lane. Excellant range of beer (bottled, draught etc) - the Kelham Island Pale Rider on top form, as was Thornbridge Jaipur IPA, Acorn Motlika (?) IPA, the house beer by ? and Abbeydales' Moonshine & Absolution.
The food was great value, and a very tasty piece of steak as well.
An essential pub to visit on my next visit to Sheffield
On the day I only had time to visit here and another pub before the game (which instead of attending would have been better spent in the pubs in hindsight) so hopefully return visits to Sheffield will be on the cards next season. Hopefully at a weekend next season.

27 Mar 2010 04:36

The Auctioneer, Blackpool

Have visited this place again on few occasions before going to the football &not alot has changed. 12 handpumps in total yet all bar 3 had available soon on them ( the 3 being Abbot, Greene King IPA & a very awful Spinning Dog brew).
Wouldn't mind but the available soons always seem to be a good selection.

Have had the same problem with vouchers and 2 half pints at this place.

27 Mar 2010 04:26

The Pump and Truncheon, Blackpool

Last visit was a few weeks ago before the Blackpool v Preston game. Only one beer on sale ( a tasty Cottage beer),pub was packed, beer sold out, pub became empty............

8 Jan 2010 05:55

The Brunswick Inn, Derby

Not as away fan friendly as the Alexandra but not a problem.
Vast selection of ales to try - the house beers were very good in particularly Rambo (7% )
Good value butties behind the bar.

8 Jan 2010 05:52

The Alexandra Hotel, Derby

Good quality ales to select from & taste. The Castle Rock Harvest Pale & Thornbridge Kipling were in very good order.
Seemed away fan friendly.
Friendly staff & customers.

8 Jan 2010 05:49

The Victoria Hotel, Cleveleys

Now serving Wheat Beer ..........
Pub is still lifeless, toilets are still maybe the worst smelling in the country.

21 Dec 2009 05:10

The Smithfield Hotel, Manchester

Had a Lancashire & Yorkshire Beer Festival on last weekend. serving some interesting brews - Phoenix Humbug at 7% went down well. Very busy.

2 Dec 2009 16:11

The Angel, Manchester

A second visit and again well kept beer and cosy atmosphere. Busy again though 2 people were serving behind the bar.

29 Nov 2009 10:38

Thomas Drummond, Fleetwood

Had 7 of 10 handpumps the other night showcasing Northern Brewery beers - of which most except the stout tasted the same........

22 Nov 2009 05:27

The Taps, Lytham St Annes

A usual high standard visit yesterday. The 2 beers tried were in top order (Darkstar - Hophead & Castle Rock - Screech Owl IPA). Busy as usual.

22 Nov 2009 05:25

The Smithfield Hotel, Manchester

Usual visit last weekend when in the area. Good selection it seemed on..... 4 of the 8 beers "went" during my visit including an excellant Phoenix Snowbound. There didn't seem too much of a rush to replace the beers despite the pub being busy.

22 Nov 2009 05:23

Bar Fringe, Manchester

Fairly quick (ish) visit last Saturday night before dashing to get train home. Not as busy as usual. Tried 3 of 5 ales on (Holdens, Kelham Island, Phoenix) and all were great so I didn't get chance or excuse to sample the vast bottle selection or the cider.

17 Nov 2009 05:16

The Marble Arch, Manchester

Usual visit when in the area to this outstanding pub last Saturday. Busy despite the awful weather. Beers in excellant nick - particularly Marble's Dobber & Abbeydale's Moonshine. New food regime - menu's displayed on giant blackboards where the junkbox used to be housed. No food tried by me on this visit, though my friends Pheasant in pot au fier was described as excellant ( despite him grimacing a couple of times biting into bits of shot).

This pub is essential visiting when in Manchester.

17 Nov 2009 05:13

The Angel, Manchester

First visit to the new (er) venture from the previous Beer House. The layout is similar though feels alot more warm and homely. 6 beers on including a house beer from Facer's - which at 4.9% (didn't taste that strong mind) must be a contender for one of the strongest house beers around? Other breweries featured included Dunham Massey & Boggarts. The beer quality was good. Only one chap behind the bar. When myself and friend arrived a group of about 8 chaps were soon following us in through the door and still hadn't all been served until we had finished our first halves of beer!

A pub re-added to my Salchester Crawl when in the area

17 Nov 2009 05:08

The Knott Bar, Deansgate

Usual visit to one of favourite watering holes in Manchester. Beers on were excellant - Pictish Warrior in particular. Not as busy as usual but last Saturday was a filthy day. The Chicken Chorizo stew was its usual excellant self!
Very handy for the tram stop, free trams last Saturday (very useful in the driving rain and gales), so managed to get from Knott Bar to the Angel in the northern quarter in under 10 minutes - a record?

17 Nov 2009 05:02

The Black Lion Hotel, Salford

First visit to this corner occupying pub. Was steadily busy compared the recently visited Crescent & Oxford. 8 ales to choose from ( 2 from Vale, then from Moorhouses, Salamander, Leyden, 2 from Empire and another...) the Salamander and Vale VPA were very good. Didn't try the food but seemed to doing a brisk trade. Plenty of different seating arrangements to choose from.

A good addition to my "Salchester" pub crawl when I visit the area.

17 Nov 2009 04:57

The New Oxford, Salford

A return visit on Saturday just gone. Found to have the same excellant range of beers on offer. Not as busy as previous visit though the filthy weather was the probable cause of that. The beers tried were in good order - the house beer from Phoenix went down a treat & the Allgates Napoleon's Retreat was a superb beer.
The landlord seemed to be to-ing & fro-ing between this place and the Black Lion down the road.

17 Nov 2009 04:52

The Crescent, Salford

Visited the Crescent for a second glimpse on Saturday and a vast improvement. 2 very good ales from Mallinson's tried - the mild was in particularly excellant. Beer choice again looked good though bar the house beer (Mallinsons Crecent Hop) all the beers on were "darkies".
Majority of the customers in were drinking the cider I did notice.

17 Nov 2009 04:43

The Boltmakers Arms, Keighley

Serve the best kept Taylor's range in the world. An essential visit if in Keighley. The full Taylor's range are usually on with 2 guests (Fuller's ESB and a Wandsworth beer on my last visit) and a hand pulled cider on the bar as well.

Friendly pub, feels like a front room of a house!

7 Nov 2009 03:50

The Cricketers Arms, Keighley

Visited this pub while attending the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway Beer Festival, and found this pub had it's own beer festival on. Severalof the 20 beers were tried and well kept they were. Friendly bar staff, the cellarman in particular.
Interesting seating outside.

7 Nov 2009 03:48

The Fox and Goose, Hebden Bridge

Always a port of call when in or around Hebden Bridge. I wish that this pub was my local. Friendly staff, very good beer. Rooftop beer garden has a good view.
The Themed Beer Festivals are well worth a visit.

7 Nov 2009 03:45

Moyles, Hebden Bridge

Visited while waiting for my train home following the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway Beer Festival. Modern decor. The 3 beers tried out of 6 were excellantly served and kept.
Will be back to try again with maybe some food......

7 Nov 2009 03:42

Thomas Drummond, Fleetwood

To add, usual wetherspoons behaviour the other night. Serving an 8% Belgium Beer, but only serving it in half pints only as instructed! Yet if you asked for 2 halves (or 4 in my case) you got your pint in glasses! The staff were puzzled why the majority of the customers were "off their rockers" that night!

7 Nov 2009 03:38

The Shovels, Blackpool

The recent 13th Beer Festival showcased some excellant beers.Including a 13.1% from Falstaff Brewery - played havoc with the guts the next day.
Tried aload of beers and a weapons grade ginger beer! Washed it down with a 2 for 10 Steak & Eggs!
Marvellous

7 Nov 2009 03:30

Sugar Sugar, Thornton-Cleveleys

A hole of gigantic hole's. The only benefit this place had was that it opened until all hours - now that it doesn't it isn't worth bothering with.
Expensive, and very poor choice of drinks.

22 Oct 2009 05:27

No4 And Freemasons, Blackpool

Thwaites house, served an excellant pint of Wainwrights. Other beers were Lancaster Bomber & Original Bitter. Good value food. People near us did complain about the food - rump steak too fatty! - however you get 2 steaks for 6.95!!What do some people expect I ask?
Well worth another visit.

22 Oct 2009 05:25

The Continental Pub, Preston

Fantastic recent beer festival - over 70 real ale, numerous bottles and ciders. Only downside, no food only little snack things while the festival was on!Not helpful after a day's drinking and your heart set on a 3 course meal!!

20 Oct 2009 05:45

The New Britannia, Preston

Another good recent visit, a couple of Salamander's tried and were ok. Friends in attendence had problems with an awful tasting cider (washing up liquid) - on sending back the barman did highlight that it was supposed to taste as such!!!
Still far from convinced about the new decor. The back room by the pool table must have the biggest lcd tv known to man (in comparasion to size of room).

20 Oct 2009 05:43

The Grey Friar, Preston

Very busy Wetherspoons pub. Several ales on, including a superbly kept Phoenix Wobbly Bob, however 4 of the beers went off as I was at the bar and didn't look like being replaced in any hurry. Which none of them had when I left almost an hour later.

20 Oct 2009 05:39

The Thatched House, Poulton Le Fylde

Have to agree with all comments about this pub. It can be good and then it can be awful - not just overtime,a matter of days in some instances.
The Thatched particularly at weekends is packed to the rafters.
The beer quality has improved of late, though as with my first comment that can quality can change daily - usually 6or7pumps in use. Majority of the ales come from either Bank Top,Clarks, Lytham & Hart.
Perhaps the best pub in Poulton (still) though the Town Hall gives it a run for it's money.

4 Oct 2009 04:41

The Old Vic, Preston

Next to the train station.Has a decent choice of national & regional ales (up to 6 usually). However, the beers are served too cold...... and no end of complaining seems to have unbucked the trend.
Order your pint an hour before you want to drink.
They don't accept telephone orders in advance of a visit, I did try!!!!

3 Oct 2009 04:10

Thomas Drummond, Fleetwood

Currently in the middle of a 2 Northern Micro Beer Festival - no national brews like Abbots n Pedrigree's to be seen - yippee

3 Oct 2009 04:05

The Number 15, St Annes on Sea

Visited this place after reading an article in a local CAMRA newsletter. Lovely interior, some art gallery display upstairs. Beers were well kept, though choice a bit lacking (Regional/National brews).
Combine this place and the Trawl Boat and I can now spend more than an hour in St Annes.

3 Oct 2009 03:22

The Crown Hotel, Standish

Probadly one of the best pubs in the NorthWest. Excellant choice of beers - usually 2 from Prospect and up to others.
Food excellant, Steak night on Tuesday is a must - I have the 1335g biggest steak prize in my sights!

A visit here is essential.

3 Oct 2009 03:19

The Ale Wagon, Leicester

Had a large selection of beers on the bar but all that were tried were average. Pub had a strange smell.

24 Sep 2009 04:46

Flores Bar, Leicester

Recent visit, stumbled on this place by chance. Alot of pubs in the area were closed (down?) and was thirsty. Looked abit "posh" lardy dar on the outside. Found to be ok inside - 3 real ales on, looked an interesting choice but didn't try as was very distracted by the bottle selection. Nice seating area outside to watch the world go by
No unique glasses for the beers and the staff were friendly but very lacking in any beer knowledge.
Worth a visit - didn't try the food.

24 Sep 2009 04:39

Sloanes, Leicester

Well closed when visited a couple of weeks ago and looked like it had been for awhile. There seemed to be a few other pubs closed in the area as I walked to this place from the football ground

24 Sep 2009 04:24

Swan and Rushes, Leicester

Had a decent selection of beers. Fairly well kept. Not the best service you will recieve in a pub but not the worst either. Will visit again on next visit to Leicester.

24 Sep 2009 04:22

The Criterion, Leicester

First visit to Leicester recently and ended up spending alot of time in this pub.
Excellant choice of well kept ales - 10 on the bar, which over the course of the weekend must have changed at least every hour. Oakham's & Rugby beers featured prominently. Good bottle selection and staff were friendly and knowledgable
Home made Pizza's were excellant - restaurant quality!
I would say this place is the bestpub in Leicester and look forward to visiting again next season or in the cup!

24 Sep 2009 04:16

The Victoria, Lincoln

Just got back from a couple of nights in Lincoln. Stayed opposite this pub. 8 beers on - Taylor's Landlord, Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Bateman's XB, 3 other Batemans' seasonals (names escape me) a Hopback and an Ironbridge brew.
All tried over 2 days and all were excellant - though the Castle Rock varied as some bar staff served it with sparkler, some without - my preference was with sparkler.
Best pub I came across in Lincoln.

25 Aug 2009 10:22

The One Crown, Watford

Only decent pub in Watford I found. Served 2 well kept ales - Tring Jack O Legs and Roosters Hedgehodge was the guest. Not too unwelcoming. Didn't have any hassle from Watford fans being in my Tangerine colours.
Will stick to this place next season as the other pubs on high street and near the football ground weren't worth visiting.

25 Aug 2009 10:18

The White Cross, Lancaster

Similar to last visit, however beer choice was limited. Only one local brew on (from Bowland), the rest were uninspiring national brews. 8.70 for 3 pints..... perhaps I am living in the dark ages still?!?

25 Aug 2009 10:13

The Water Witch, Lancaster

Another good visit. However the beer choice was a bit flat. Tried a very good Roosters - a lager style ale.
Very busy inside with eaters so to brave the windy elements outside.

25 Aug 2009 10:10

The Golden Lion Hotel, Lancaster

First visit recently. Welcoming Landlady. Decent pints of Summer Lightening and a honey beer from Brakspear. Beer range seems to come from "Bigger" national breweries rather than local ones.
Football shown which is rare for "ale" pubs in Lancaster.

Worth a visit

25 Aug 2009 10:07

The Borough, Lancaster

Still best pint in Lancaster. Tried the food this time & was excellant. If 2 main course order you get a bottle of house wine! Food wasn't the cheapest - starter and main was 20 a head ish (though wine was included)
Beers again on form - though sadly 3 went off while being pulled for us and weren't replaced by the time we left 2 hours later.
The Allendale brews we tried were very good indeed.

25 Aug 2009 10:03

The Penny Bank, Lancaster

Another visit and still that welcoming. Decent pint of Bowland Dragon. Bar staff liked the sound of their own voice's.
A quick pint pub before moving on place!

25 Aug 2009 10:00

The Sun Hotel and Bar, Lancaster

Nice pub, serve a range of 4 Lancaster beers - Black & Blond were sampled and ok. The 4 "guests" were uninspiring.
Nice layout, interesting well in the back room.
Shows Sky Sports games and serves food.
To be included on a Tour of Lancaster.
Near the bus and train stations

25 Aug 2009 09:53

The Three Mariners, Lancaster

Decent boozer, served a very good pint of Titanic Iceberg on my recent visit. A few other ales on - another Titanic and the rest looked uninspiring (Black Sheep, Deuchars etc).
Not as pricey as other Lancaster pubs.
Nice and roomy. Good seating outside.
Hardy for the nearby bus station and rail network.

25 Aug 2009 09:48

Ale Emporium, Preston

Wow,great choice of well kept beer up to 6 on the bar but cellar runs as well. Cheap n tasty home cooked food at lunchtime. Check opening times, shuts at 1430-1500 I think most days before reopening in the evening.
Excellant jukebox and cheap pool table.
Reminds me of the Wyre Lounge Bar in Fleetwood before it's sad decline!

Essential visit if in Preston

13 Aug 2009 05:54

The Old Black Bull, Preston

Hit and miss pub - sometimes you get a decent beer then next visit it is the pits. Tend to have a job lot of beers from the same brwer as their guest beers. Recent couple of visits, first had 4 Chatham beers on - all undrinkable - complaints to the bar go nowhere (reponses like drink somewhere else then etc). Next visit a week later had 4 Anglo Dutch beers on that were all fantastic.
Usually a good band on Saturday nights

13 Aug 2009 05:49

The New Britannia, Preston

Recent decor change - ? for the better.Still an excellant choice of real ales and real cider.
On recent visit the beers where in good nick.

13 Aug 2009 05:44

The Steamer, Fleetwood

First visit for a while. Plenty of empty handpumps.Only one ale available - Robinson's Nosey Parker which was awful.
Plenty of pub activites - snooker, pool, darts, machines etc

Has a bit of a lifeless feel to it these days

The Saddle Inn, Blackpool

Started to visit this pub again recently & found to be back to it's "glory" days. 7 well kept ales from all over the place. Only a small amount of half pint glasses in stock - not catering for tickers as yet!
Pleasant outdoor drinking area.Small (ish) cosy rooms within the pub.
Decent pub for pre football drinks.
Food looks good value - though not tried.

The Sun Hotel, Coniston

Visited this pub last weekend, decent lay out, food looked good. 4 of the 8 available beers sampled were clean tasting and well kept. Gripe about the choice of beer on show - only one from a Lake Land Brewery ( Coniston Bluebird ), the rest were from Moorhouses' x3 , Taylor's,Cooper Dragon, and 2 Scottish Breweries - better showcasing of local ales should be in operation ( Barngates, Foxfield,Watermill, Hawkshead + others all within 10 miles of Coniston).

11 Jul 2009 05:21

The Drunken Duck Inn, Barngates

Visited this pub last weekend. Cycled from Ambleside where we were camping - killer hill up to the pub. The beers were all pretty decent ( Mothbag, Westmorland Gold, Pride of Westmorland, Chester's ).
Sat outside with a lovely view, though as soon as the sun went down got eaten alive by the local flying wildlife - staff unhelpful - no candles!

11 Jul 2009 05:15

The Knott Bar, Deansgate

Still one of the best drinking places in Manchester. The food, now tried since last review, is top notch - the Chicken & Chorizo stew is worth a particular mention.
Great selection on my last visit - Titanic, Millstone, 2 from Marble, Prospect

23 Jun 2009 05:30

Sandbar, Manchester

Still worth a visit this place, still no "proper" glasses for the foreign beers.
The real ale was in good nick on last visit, both from Phoenix.

23 Jun 2009 05:24

The Borough, Lancaster

A very good few beers were enjoyed in here. Choice of around 6 beers, a mix selection of local and national micro ales. Very large place, high ceilings. Eating area was very busy, the menu looked very nice (if pricey indeed) and will be tried in the future. Sat in the bay window and watched the world go by - vast selection of customer newspapers provided.
If a CAMRA member show your membership card for 30p off a pint - which is valuable as Lancaster isn't the cheapest place to drink.
This place is a contender for best pint in Lancaster.

23 Jun 2009 05:20

The White Cross, Lancaster

A decent boozer with a good choice of ale (12 handpumps in use on my visit). Seems a welcoming pub. However, very pricey. 2.75 a pint for a 3.6% ale is outrageous. Bar staff were friendly until I enquired about the high prices of beer - answered with " we are as cheap as anywhere in Lancaster or Lancashire" - sadly you are not by a long shot.
Worth a visit this pub but worth having some notes in the wallet!!

23 Jun 2009 05:12

The Water Witch, Lancaster

Visited during the Spring Beer Festival. Good choice. Didn't notice the price of the beers as much as in other Lancaster pubs.
Ales were well kept. Food was good, portions on the meagre side.
Lovely place to side by the canal and watch the world go by - if alittle cold.
Well worth sniffing out if in Lancaster.

23 Jun 2009 05:07

The Penny Bank, Lancaster

Not the most welcoming place but sample 2 decent ales from a choice of 4.

23 Jun 2009 05:03

The Continental Pub, Preston

Great Ale - well kept and great choice, great food, great venue - not the easiest to find if travelling to Preston.
Twice yearly Beer Festival well worth attending.
My current favourite pub in Lancashire

23 Jun 2009 01:44

The Taps, Lytham St Annes

No doubt the best pub on the Fylde Peninsular ( since the demise of the Wyre Lounge at Fleetwood anyway ). Great choice of beer, always well kept. Very busy pub especially in the evenings. Good value lunch's - the Pea & Ham soup is fantastic.
Any essential visit if ever within the Fylde

23 Jun 2009 01:39

The Pump and Truncheon, Blackpool

Just do 3 real ales now - usually from Fuzzy Duck, Cottage, Moorhouses or Lytham breweries. Also from a few visits regularly the ales are around the 4% mark and usually golden/pale ale brews.
Decent boozer and the best pint of ale in Central Blackpool ( only place!)

23 Jun 2009 01:24

The New Oxford, Salford

Wow, what a find. Vast selection of ale (13 handpumps in use) and even more of a vast foreign beer selection (15 pumps) and a large bottle menu as well!!
Tried several of the ales from micro breweries near and far - all superd.
The Oxford is the type of place you could spend alot of time in....
Friendly staff.
Will return for sure

23 Jun 2009 01:13

The Crescent, Salford

Well I must agree with alot of the previous comments. What a let down. Had heard so many good things about this place for along time, yet never had the chance to visit until last Friday.
The beer choice was good looking, but was not well kept (tried 4 different halves). The pub was busy and did notice the majority of the customers were either drinking Budvar or the cask cider.
Will return for a second glimpse at some point.....

23 Jun 2009 01:09

The New Britannia, Preston

Worth a visit this pub. Usually 5 or 6 beers, goose eye bronte bitter n castle eden ale the regulars. Can be busy. Decent jukebox.

18 Nov 2007 23:21

The Market Tavern, Preston

My favourite pub in Preston. 4 beers to choose from all well sourced and well kept. Good range of foreign beers including my favourite Maisels weisse. Snug atmosphere, beautiful interior. Opens early. Leave the wife to shop n sink a few in here while she spends the money! Thats my usual trick anyway.

18 Nov 2007 23:17

The Victoria Hotel, Cleveleys

Grew up in this pub. Cheap ale. Sam Smiths OBB makes me ill at the best of times - at the Vic you are dicing with your own life! Tales of empties being poured back in barrels still band about!

18 Nov 2007 07:31

The Shovels, Blackpool

Not the best pub on the Fylde coast. Wide ranging beer range sourced from the length and breadth of Britain, usually 5 beers on. Not kept the best though, regularly line cleaner can be detected in pints. The twice a year beer festivals are worth a visit. Plenty of pub activites, food is standard pub chain grub. Worth a visit, but better places to be found

18 Nov 2007 07:24

The Auctioneer, Blackpool

Not the best Weatherspoons but not the worst. Staff usually on a different planet - can usually only remember one drink at a time! Service with food can be variable. The beer is usually ok. Usually full of hardened drinkers who congregate around the entrance area which can be off putting! Good for pre/post football at Bloomfield Road! Security on door do sometimes turn away fans in colours way!
Up The Pool!

18 Nov 2007 07:11

Thomas Drummond, Fleetwood

One of the better Weatherspoons, will come to buts soon. Excellant range of beers, usually a Phoenix beer on, and kept fairly well. Opens late most nights.
The buts, service is hit and miss. Staff have a bad habit of putting the pegs in the barrels before final orders. A better pub during the day, can get very noisy and "bashful" at night. Do your drinking before 8-9 o clock on a friday or saturday night!

18 Nov 2007 07:05

Marine Hall, Fleetwood

WAS a gem and my local for many years. Now following a makeover, new opening times (Friday, Sat n Sunday only) and a reduction from 8 beers to 2 or 3, and no cellarman this place is the pits. The beer is more often than not sour.
A real shame

18 Nov 2007 07:00

The Lass O'Gowrie, Manchester

Hit and miss pub whenever I have visited. Have been turned away before as pub was full once! Watched a cup final in their once and the atmosphere was electric. Usually plenty of real ales on but quality can be variable. Worth a visit

18 Nov 2007 06:52

Sandbar, Manchester

First time I went (March 07) the place was hit and miss.
Gave it another go and much improved. Though the real ale still not up to much. Good foreign beers but no proper glasses to serve them in just bog standard pint glasses ! When I asked proper glasses was told basically to put up or shut up!
Worth a visit though

18 Nov 2007 06:47

The Knott Bar, Deansgate

Another excellant place in Manchester, and another place I visit when in the city. Good foreign beers and real ales (usually always from Manchester brewers). Opens late. Never tried the food but it looks n smells good.
Have found some of the staff a bit upselves at times.

18 Nov 2007 06:42

Bar Fringe, Manchester

Good choice of foreign beers and staff who usually know the beers. The real ale can be hit and miss. The scrumpy is always worth a go!
Opens late which is a bonus if gone to a concert or show.

18 Nov 2007 06:04

The Marble Arch, Manchester

Brilliant place, always a port of call when in Manchester. Beers always on top form, food is always worth the wait. Decent jukebox
Can get very busy.
Love the slight slant of the place, especially after a few sherberts!

18 Nov 2007 06:01

The Smithfield Hotel, Manchester

Great pub, wide selection of well kept beers. Good value accomadation.
Usually a beer for anyone.
Look beyond the decor as this place is a gem. Excellant beer festival as well in January
