I'm very surprised there have not been any recent reviews as the place has improved immensely under the new management. Four (I believe) real ales on and now doing food again (two for price of one during the day, so excellent value too). Well done and thanks to Aaron and Angie.

Great place. Friendly staff. Shame some of their regulars let them down badly and put others off.

Have to agree with last post on here. They have lost a lot of the friendly regulars and is now decidely hostile if you're not in with the in crowd.

Rugby is also shown in 3 Guinea's, Nags Head, and Allied (if you can afford to drink in the Allied)

Hilarious! Up against the Retreat for ciders! Keep taking the magic mushrooms mate!

Those of you who are planning to re-visit shouldn't wait too long as I have heard it is closing down again.

I think this is one of those pubs that it depends what time you go in and what you're looking for. Most people I know in there are the 'after work' set and there's quite a good buzz then, with a few pints and a bit of fun banter and the sort of teasing that locals can get away with and nobody takes it too seriously.

The Fishermans Cottage, Reading
I used to be regular here years ago but have not been in for a while (I relocated with work) and have to say I was pleasantly surprised when I popped back in. I really like the feel of the place now, friendly and relaxed and ,yes, as has beer pointed out previously, the beer choice has improved too. Can't be bad!

It's high time Jon realised he can't run a pub and perhaps choose a career more worthy of his talents. Such as litter picking. (No offence to litter pickers!) Before this (could be lovely) pub disappears for good, which would be a real shame.

This used to be a great pub a couple of years ago until they put their children in to run it who quite frankly have neither the interest nor the attitude to run a pub. Last few times I was in it seems to be run mainly for their mates. With the reputation of having the highest prices in Reading and the blatant double standards in their policies, depending on whether you're with the 'in crowd' or not, I'm afraid that these days it's a must to avoid.

Despite all the fanfare when this place re-opened earlier this year it has spiralled downhill with amazing rapidity. The Manager appears to have little interest in the place (I suppose it's just a job to him) and customer service is not a top priority, unfortunately neither is cleanliness. Such a shame and a waste of the great potential this pub could have in the right hands.

The Battle Inn, Reading
Now the Royal as previously commented. Recently under new management, this time by someone with plenty of experience in the trade which should help the new changes. On recent visits it has always been friendly with a good example of pub banter going on! Has pool and darts, tv's (but not intrusive) and the food I've had has been superb at very reasonable prices. I'd thoroughly recommend popping in - it's a world away from how it used to be.
