The Pot Still, Glasgow

On a sodden Wednesday night In Glasgow the Pot Still provided me with a perfect evening sampling a HUWGE selection if Whiskeys and local beers. The staff were both amazingly knowledgeable and very friendly as were the other drinkers. Well worth a visit If you are in Glasgow and fancy a proper Scottish 'Swally

The Albion, Barnsbury

Spent a very pleasurable Sunday afternoon there celebrating a 30th birthday and despite all the crap reviews around was pleasantly surprised...good selection of beers and a good sunday lunch menu all catered for by responsive, if rushed-off-their-feet, staff.
VERY Expensive and the epitome of Islington 'millionaires row'...but then what do you expect in a lovely part of Islington?

The Fox, Hanwell

nicely located and priced
located near the canal and Hanwell centre the Fox is a simple looking place popular with locals and walkers
good selection of beers and wines and the sunday lunch is a nice big hot portion of chicken, lamb or beef
also very popular with dog walkers who are catered for with doggie snacks behind the bar.

The Royal George, Charing Cross Road

Just off Charing cross road, down a grotty little side street that smells of wee and is opposite a huge building site sits the Royal George.

From the outside it doesn't look very nice or look like anyone ever goes in there. But then you'd be wrong.
Inside is a medium sized bar with plenty of seating serving a smashing selection of booze. The staff are like their clients, slight bohemian and quirky and they know their stuff..giving you a run down of whats best and what they like.
Downstairs is a function room/extra seating that on a wednesday evening becomes the base for their 'Kare-Uke' Ukulele nights

If you can get past its exterior and its location its a relaxing well stocked treat

The Commercial, Herne Hill

A great pub-with a few problems

Id been going to Herne hill for ages until I decided to give the Commercial a try-mainly down to my Herne Hill local other half having a chip on her shoulder about the place (she went in there once and they didnt have any ice) - and Im glad I did.
Until then I was a frequenter of either the Half Moon (cack range of beers decent local clinetelle) or the Florence (awesome range of beers braying posho clientelle)
The Commercial is the perfect combination of the 2 ..awesome selection of beers, ciders and spirits and a good mix of locals and slightly bohemian 'young professional' types. Its got real fires, sofas, the music is unobtrusive and in my experience the staff are always welcoming , courteous and sometimes suspicously unsteady on their feet.
The only downside is the hit & miss grub which can go from being brilliant one day ( usually when the place isnt busy) to be being utter crap (usually on a Sunday lunchtime) and I suspect this is due to the sheer amount of people ordering food and/or I suspect that the staff are at the booze themselves and are half cut by lunchtime
If you can get past the hit and miss food its, in my eyes anyway, a peach of a place.

The Florence, Herne Hill

Does exactly what it says on the tin

A handsome looking if slightly sterile pub in a rich, gentrified part of South London that caters for rich, gentrified South Londoners and their kids
If you dont like wimpy 'new men' running round after their badly behaved little darlings while their braying women folk yak away -avoid.
If you like a fine selection of beers and some quite good grub then tuck in.

The Golden Fleece, Bath

Admittedly not the best looking pub in thwe world from the outside but then Twerton isnt the best looking neighborhood in the world either

Inside is a decent sized and basically decorated bar serving a good selection of Real's and local ciders.
Its the welcome that makes the pub worth giving a try
I was there before and after a game with Bath City and as a supporter of a club whos fans are usually treated like the 2nd coming of Atilla the hun it made a nice change to meet such a relaxed and friendly landlord. Gave us all day use of his small car park AND supplied bar nibbles after the game

good work

Fox and Hounds, Riseley

An Absolute Scream!

I thought Ironic restaurant experiences were restricted to big cities like London...but take a trip into rural North Bedfordshire and located in a beautiful 400 year old setting is the Fox and Hounds-a true jewel in Ironic themed restaurants where you can experience old style English restaurant hospitality that is straight out of an episode of Fawlty Towers.
The combination of a staggeringly rude and arrogant landlord- who really does seem to believe that YOU are doing HIM a favour by coming into his restaurant,
sullen teenage staff all seemingly auditioning for a role as Catherine Tate's 'bovvered' character and ridiculously expensive sub-Beefeater food -will leave you chuckling for days
The attention to detail here is stunning-from the realistic acne and piercings of the barely literate teenage staff to the hideous 70s style attempts at Olde English pub furnishings and the landlords brilliantly ironic 'tash.
Get in quick though-with such a perfect combination the irony seeking bright young things will be flocking from London and New york to rub shoulders with the BWM driving, pringle jumping nouveau riche who already love this Bedfordshire treat!
