The Moon Under Water, Balham

I decided to chance it the other day after a bad tube trip. When I opened the door the reek of despair was palpable.(The Tooting spoon, by comparison, has only a whiff of hopelessness).
Loud and rowdy I can deal with.. quiet menace, on the other hand...
To be fair, I didn't stop for that drink and almost longed again to be shoe-horned back onto that tube with the more familiar smell of B.O.,wet wool and city girls.

The Trafalgar Arms, Tooting

Lived opposite for three years, so has a place in me heart. Hopefully still run by Trevor(a bear of a man with a lurid mohican.Candle - lit ambience attracts a good cross - section, from gay couples to raucous nurses from nearby St. Georges. Good to sit outside on a hot day. The roast dinners are fabulous.

JJ Moons, Tooting

Arranged to meet someone here a couple of years ago.. turned up and the place had been cordoned off by the police. Has had a couple of 'incidents' through the years, but retains a rough charm. Full of characters - elderly Jamaican men animatedly discussing cricket,a shifty guy selling cigs from a duffel - bag or geezers having a quick pint while the missus pootles around Sainsburys across the way. Great for a cheap drink and theres a cash machine outside, but not somewhere to go on a first date if you ever want to see her again.

The Wheatsheaf, Tooting Bec

Good to have an odd pint during the day and watch Tooting pass by the large windows. It can get lively at night, and the various OAPs whirling about to Abba make you think you've wandered onto the set of "Cocoon"(or possibly "Dawn of the Dead"!)
