The George, Brighton

This place has possibly relied on being vegie as a USP for too long. Not bad, but doesn't seem to make the effort to be great either.

The Bat and Ball, Brighton

Very violent fight erupted in there the other night just as we walked up to the door. Woldn't be so bad, but it's so small that flying glass could et anyne in there. There's better pubs within 100 yards in any direction.

The Geese Have Gone Over The Water, Brighton

Urban legend has it that it was called 'The Geese', however the sign writer had to admit he couldn't paint geese once he'd done the background, so suggested that thay might have flown over the water?

Anyway, it's a lot like the Dover Castle (if a bit more 'hugger mugger')just up the hill in many many ways, so if you can do without the beer garden of the Castle, and want to save your knees, pop in.

The Walmer Castle, Kemptown

Hav eaten there a few times in the last few months. The food has tended to be tasty, well presented, and fairly good value. Their Pizza and Calzones are very good indeed, the roasts have tended to be generous and well executed, and the salads (hey, I can eat healthy in a pub if I want!) are really excellent. Huge Fishcakes too.

They don't sell Ginger Beer (boo!), but they do have a decent selection of beers. Overall very very good indeed, friendly crowd, kids welcome in the back rooms, great staff, decent nosh. Maybe everyone was abit second best the day after pride- I know I was.

The Pub With No Name, Brighton

A fine establishment, and a great second (or second to last) stop on the Hanover crawl. Sadly though has recently succumbed to the really really big screen tv plague, and when there is a cup game (any cup game!) seems like a room full of staring goons.

When it's not got the TV's on it's well worth a visit.

The Marksman, Shoreditch

A clasic of it's genre, this is a real piece of inner London, with a properly welcoming atmosphere. The layouts a bit quirky (mind your head on the spiral staircase), and it gets snug quite quickly. Current beer selection includes two bitters, and the intention is to increase to at least one guest beer before long.

New signage indicates a real sense of respect for the original design- this won't be getting a cack handed facelift.

The Sidewinder, Brighton

I've never been particularly enamoured of this place, which is mre of a bar than a pub, but it's light and airy layout, decent(ish) beers and apparently good food kept it there or thereabouts as a potential watering hole. However, that tell tale sign of a dodgy spot (security on the door) really chimed in the other week.

We were in a part if six, sqeezed in on a sofa, and an officious little bloke with a badge was relentlessly rude and agressive in tell one of our party not to put her feet on the seats. What should have been a friendly evening spiralled horribly because of what looked to be a first time bouncer getting a bit badge happy.

The trouble ended up following us outside, which wasn't great, and has put me off going near here anytime soon.

The County Hotel, Lytham

Probably the biggest pub in town. No great shakes, but I only seem to end up there once every few years so whadda I know. It ain't the taps, and so far as I know that's the only pub with any real character left in Lytham.

The Lion And Lobster, Brighton

Recently had a bot of an extension round the back so now got a few more tables. Jazz on a Thursday is outstanding and other live music through the week.

Badly Drawn Boy has played here. Fairly recently too (within the last couple of years).

The Barley Mow, Brighton

Pub quiz is indeed an absolute corker. As the notie over the bar says, 'It's got a picture round and everything!', which it has.

We came 6th in a strong feild of 14. No idea how they fitted us all in- it's not that big!

Word of warning- whilst the food is pretty good pub grub most of the time it tails off in the evening- cold paella ain't all that.

The Princess Victoria (The PV), Brighton

Keep an eye out for rock stars. Good in the evening, good in the day. Good all around actually. Yes, lovely lovely lovely.

The Bright Helm, Brighton

A disaster of a pub.

20 Oct 2005 18:18

The Walkabout, Brighton

Shudder. 'Tis a "branded drinking experience", not a pub. Fits in perfectly on West Street though.

20 Oct 2005 18:17

The Fiddlers Elbow, Brighton

A bit of a mass produced oirish pub, or so I thought. Actually has it's own distinctive vibe and does do theoccasional bt of decent live music.

20 Oct 2005 18:16

The Fishbowl, Brighton

Perculiarly buzzy and groovy and atmospheric for a middle of town place. Tiny to tell the truth, and no chance of geting a seat on a Friday or Saturday, but possibly one of the better places within a hundred yards.

The Royal Pavilion Tavern, Brighton

Pav Tav as it's known is a dispiriting place, but upstairs does cheap discos that are popular with students and Brighton residents who refuse to grow up and get over the whole indy thing.

Horatio's Bar, Brighton Pier

If you are on a stag do in Brighton, please DO go here, as you're saving the rest of town from your debauchery (which is far less original and shocking than you might imagine at the time).

Having said all that, I was her on a stag do myself some months back, and enjoyed (with a frisson of terror) the whole experience. A bit wild west, but brilliant as a Stag sump.

Terraces, Brighton

Very mixed service, but most of the staff great. Food and beer are fine, but the location more than makes up for this. In the top five sunsets in Brighton (and the competition is savage).

20 Oct 2005 18:07

The Queens Arms, Brighton

Classic Kemptown pub right in the heart of things. Fantastic atmosphere, great DJ, erm and beer too.

20 Oct 2005 18:05

The Tin Drum, Brighton

Polish Tapas anyone? Quite good food, table service in this bar/cafe. Not quite a pub, but rather nice pit stop when in the way into or out of town.

Very interesting art installations, great martinis. See, told you it wasn't really a pub.

20 Oct 2005 18:04

The No Name Bar, Brighton

Not to be mistaken for the Pub With No Name (highlight and last stop on the Southover ascent). THis is a rather more 'middle of town' place. Buzzy with ersatz atmosphere, with the most unimaginative of Brakes Brothers food. Could be we caught them at a bad time, but I was distinctly underwhelmed.

20 Oct 2005 18:03

The Hand In Hand, Brighton

I've had variable pints in here too. When they're good they're very very good, but when they are bad you'll be in trouble the next day.

20 Oct 2005 18:01

The Polar Bar East, Brighton

Mediocre 'Zelled' place- nice enough, but nothing special. Wasn't much special when it was the Burlington either.

20 Oct 2005 17:57

The Freshfield Inn, Brighton

Hmm. Got a bit of a reputation this one. Out on a limb and very much servicing it's locale rather than drawing in passing trade.

20 Oct 2005 17:55

The Cuthbert, Brighton

Very brightly lit with bad decor, sometimes a sign of pub working hard to keep things in order. A 'Fosters' pub, so if dreadful fizzy lager is the drink that sets your world on fire, could be your place.

Garden round the back is of a decent size, but less than utterly salubrious. I've lived up the road for six months and never once been tempted myself, there are too many good pubs in Brighton to bother with the mediocre.

Could be I've judged to harsh though. Popped in to ask directions once and the clientelle seemed obliging enough- mostly decorators and builders.

20 Oct 2005 17:54

The Round Georges, Brighton

New name- Two Round Georges? Looks very spiffy, wifi et al. Lot to live down though; as the Sutherland it was a wee bit dicey apparently.

20 Oct 2005 17:51

The Regency Tavern, Brighton

Apparently holding up well after change of managment. A gem, and very convenient for the shops.

Real test is Chrimbo- old managment had the touch of a pantomime stage designer, hope the new can keep up the standard.

20 Oct 2005 17:49

The Barley Mow, Brighton

Nicely ramshackle place, very kemptown, but not like that. Beer garden is now covered most the the year, and very snugg in the evening. Bar has fantastic selection of sweeties- a proper tuck shop. Ales are a good selection, malts a bit thin, food is a broad range of well made substancial fare, including a few surprises.

I'd rate it higher, but that might spoil it- this is one place that doesn't try too hard at all. Most similar place in Brighton- possibly the Lion and Lobster, only that place does music.

Pub quiz on a Thursday, off down there now to check it out.
