The Three Moles Inn, Selham

Under Tom and Ollie who have been the landlords since 2017 the pub has gone from strength to strength whilst maintaining the appeal of a traditional small country pub.

If you haven't visited since lockdown times ended then I recommend you come back and take a look at the Three Moles tree carving (yes really) in the car park, the subtle but significant improvements that have been going on, and enjoy a pint of ale and maybe something to eat.

Still a a real pub with a wonderful atmosphere.

The Three Moles Inn, Selham

Great - the Three Moles is under new management and they are running the traditional Three Moles beer festival in the garden on 21, 22, 23 June 2013.

New landlord and landlady very pleasant and doing a range of light bites as well as their good old Betty Stogs beer.

Nice pub under yet another new team. They seem to have taken it just slightly more up market presentation wise - fresh flowers on the dining room tables and a bit more care with the food presentation. The beer is still very kept with a couple of real ales and a good choice of largers etc (so I am told as I don't often drink larger). Good value for money for the area with main meals from just under a tenner with a nice touch a small 6oz steak and chips available for just £10.

All the staff were very friendly and you're welcome to bring your dog in with you so ideal pub after having been for a local walk. Most important for us.

The Silver Horseshoe, Midhurst

It is now a pizza express

Useful to keep on this site for historical reasons.

The Foresters Arms, Graffham

Great pub, lots of character with large open fire. Combines a friendly place for a pint with a good place for a meal out. As others say - deserves to be busier but it is a bit off the beaten track in Graffham. Friendly locals and bar staff make you feel welcome.

The Lickfold Inn, Petworth

Has a "For Sale" sign outside now.

The Grove Inn, Petworth

Great Inn - very friendly staff and serve beer from the barrel. Open fire to sit around and the resturant area is separate. Outside beer garden has good views of the south downs and plenty of parking. Food is a major attraction of this inn and is excellant. Staff always most helpful whether an quick pint or like us had our group Christmas dinner there early December.

The Stag Inn, Petworth

Visit quick if you like this pub as I hear Hamish is leaving at the end of Feb. Lets hope new tennants don't change too much else it will loose its appeal and nice atmosphere. Hamish will be a hard act to follow.

The White Hart, Witley

It's now a Youngs pub and best of all the well liked barmaid Sara is still there and now running it. Beer is well kept and the food just as good if not better. I love fish dishes and there always seems to be an appetising fish dish on the specials board to attract me plus the standard menu is refreshed regularly.

Shepheard Neame took the pub sign with them and as of November Youngs have still to put up a replacement - but don't let that deter you, well worth a visit.

The Lickfold Inn, Petworth

I agree with allatsea that this was a very successful pub in the past. Family owned and run with good beer and good food with most generous portions (not the new gastro meals where they decorate your plate with the gravy etc etc).
I remember back in the 90's it was a real locals pub, with a bar stool in the corner that was "reserved" for one of their oldest locals.

Could be successful again if the right people run it.

Going to be sold to Youngs brewery I hear.

The Star, Petworth

Yes the Star is back and as reported by others had a bit of a makeover.
However, I went in there the other evening and Fullers London Pride was now costing 3.20/pint. An inflation busting increase. Even rather over priced for Petworth, maybe they are trying to deter drinkers and attract diners, don't know. Have to check out the Stonemasons again.

The Three Moles Inn, Selham

Just a reminder - this pub now shuts ALL DAY THURSDAY and not on a Monday which is quite common locally and as had the Moles for the first few weeks after re-opening.! Also does light snacks and the well loved Three Moles beer festival at the end of June was run much as usual.

Yes its not the old Moles but its not as bad as it could be --- just take a look around a few other local pubs that have recently had a take/makeover.

Another good tip - if a review is too gushing about a place take a look at how many other pubs they have bothered to review. Probably none and that makes me suspicious as to who would bother to sign up just to give one good review.... No it does not apply to the 3Moles reviews but it does to a few others in the Petworth area.

The Prince of Wales, Haslemere

Lovely real ale pub tucked out of the way on the borders of three counties - Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex. Always has at least 3 real ales on offer in barrels behind the bar. Plenty of room in the pub, laid out in three areas plus seating and beer garden outside. Own car park. Does a range of reasonably priced home cooked food. Ale 2.60/pint and meals mostly around 8.00.

The Noahs Ark Inn, Lurgashall

Wonderful idylic location overlooking village green, giving a typical village pub setting. Under new management since end of 2006 - no more dart board as it has become a gastro pub. As Biker remarked you need to get your wallet ready 3/pint and menu mostly over 10! Very small pub car park - have to park elsewhere around green - this is not so good when its wet and muddy.

The Half Moon Inn, Northchapel

Lovely old traditional pub with pool table, darts and no juke box. Large open fire in winter.

Selection ales (3), cider (2), larger (?) start at 2.80 / pint. Good home cooking available every day plus Sunday roast - known for their Northchapel Sausages. Very generous portions and mostly below 10. Dog friendly and good beer garden at rear.

Also does accomodation (B&B) in a self contained detached cottage style building. Plenty of parking.

The Red Lion, Fernhurst

Great pub this - good atmosphere and still a local for those in Fernhurst. Regular Pub quizzes etc.

Two bar areas with plenty of tables and a little room off to one side. Quite happy for you just to go for a drink. Always a selection of 3 ales and a good range of food starting from just under 10 per meal.

Situated alongside the village green with tables outside. Plenty of parking just 50yds down the road in the village hall car park if busy.

The Royal Oak, Haslemere

Very nice locals pub. Home cooking at reasonable price. Selection of ales at around 2.80/pint. Big car park. Unusual pub layout on two levels - from pictures on wall its been there many years so maybe result of an extension. Worth a visit for a drink and bite to eat.

23 Jun 2008 08:32

The Dog and Pheasant, Brook

Very good and unusual food - roasted in front of the open fire sometimes in the winter months. Prices rather high but very good food and proper portions - not decorated plates as with some other local pub/restaurants.

Good selection of ales, lovely character building with good atmosphere.

Problems: Often busy and not much car park space so have to park in lane opposite.

23 Jun 2008 08:17

The Seahorse, Shalford

I agree with those saying that the re-furbisment has been a disaster for the pub. Been drinking and eating at the SeaHorse occasionally for many years but don't think that I'll be going back till new management take over again.

They have destroyed to old pub atmosphere - the lights over the tables look like they have come out of a factory - huge things about 2ft diameter or else multiple swivelling car headlamp units. Very out of place for a pub that is hundreds of years old. I agree with the "designed by a footballer's wife" comment made earlier.

Meals start at 10.50 and don't come with vegetables - only found this out when our meal arrived as was not clear on menu nor mentioned by the waitress that you had to order veg separately. Been told the permanent looking printed menu is identical to that at the Inn on the Lake, Godlaming ~ so now part of a pub chain maybe, I don't know. Also rather over crowded in the bar area with smallish round copper tables all with two chairs and one stool type affair.

Range of beers reasonably priced from 2.85/pint.

Was very busy on a Friday so some people like it - just not my cup of tea as they say and miss the lost atmosphere of what had been one of the best very old traditional Surrey pubs.

23 Jun 2008 07:39

The White Lion, Milford

Yes become more a gastro pub since re-opened with little space left at bar to sit and drink and when you sit down at a table with a drink the staff come up to ask for your food order. We intended to eat that evening - but they did not know that already and shows how it has become more restaurant orientated. Food was fine and plenty of space for diners.

23 Jun 2008 07:16

The White Hart, Witley

Great pub and very friendly staff when we popped in the other saturday. Beer is well kept and reasonable from 2.80/pint. Has both a lounge and public bar plus garden, very traditional with timber beams. Only eaten there twice but food was good. They also seem to welcome owners bringing in their well behaved dogs. Lovely atmosphere. Only problem is take care when leaving the car park as visibility is not good along the main road.

23 Jun 2008 07:07

The Star, Witley

Become a "gastro pub" since the refurb. The food is good (but have to disagree with previous post as the portions are on the small size - my mash potato came served in a ramakin dish - feed your eyes rather than your stomach). The beer is very pricey - 3.20-3.30 per pint, maybe to discourage the locals using it as a drinking pub, not sure.

The Merry Harriers, Hambledon

I noticed that the old signs "Warm Beer - Lousy food" had disappeared from the A283 back in April. Phoned the pub to enquire if they were still doing food and was told the kitchen was than closed. Maybe to do with the proposed sale, not sure. Glad to hear still open - and isn't the current landlord the son of the one that was there 20yrs ago in the times mentioned by Beersupper. I agree with others who say its a fine traditional old pub, nice to sit outside in the summer and they used to have a boules pitch as well by the car park.
