The Alliance, South Norwood

A nice pub but it does get its fair share of weirdos. Thankfully most weirdos go to the Wetherspoons across the road but some still find their way in to the Alliance and make it unpleasant for the rest of us.

The new landlord is very good though and the place has come on in leaps and bounds since he took over.

William Stanley, South Norwood

Okay for a quick one (or several if you're already drunk). Nice bar staff but very unpleasant regulars that look upon strangers as treading on their 'patch'. Regulars often get served ahead of not-so-regulars by the bar staff who know that they'll complain if they're not given preferential treatment. It is very clear that the staff are doing this just to avoid confrontation.

The Ship, South Norwood

I agree with the last comment. Definitely the best in the area. I've spent many good evenings here. It has the nicest people and the best character in the area.

The Portmanor, South Norwood

This pub is okay but is quite often virtually deserted. It has recently changed management which is good as the last lot were awful and probably responsible for custom deserting the place. There was a bit of a drug issue here and I'm not sure if it has really cleared up.

The Old Pack Horse, Chiswick

I've only been in this pub the once but I now work in the area so I will definitely be going back. It's a nice friendly place with a good range of beers.

The Thai restaurant at the back is very spacious (but you'll end up waiting a while on Friday lunchtime). The food is excellent and very well priced.

The Salisbury, Leicester Square

Too crowded but a nice atmosphere. Staff can be slow at times and perhaps a bit terse but I am prepared to forgive that bearing in mind the amount of grief they must get.

The Marquess of Anglesey, Covent Garden

I was in here recently. The beer is overpriced (but what do you expect in Covent Garden). I cannot comment on the food as I didn't eat there.

One plus point at this time of year is the real fire that they have. Very nice if you can get anywhere near it.

The Masons Arms, Battersea

A decidedly average place. Worth avoiding on a Friday night unless you enjoy standing and being pushed around as people fight to get to the bar. The tables are so close together that when you do get a seat you keep getting knocked by people trying to get past.

The staff are below average and don't seem to realise that serving customer is what they get paid for.

The Coal Hole, Strand

I have been in this pub a number of times and I don't find it at all bad. I've had no trouble with the staff (except when the place has been very busy) and in all other respects it is no better or worse than any other pub in the immediate area.

It is best to sit in the upstairs section if you can get a seat.
