Kings, Leicester

Now reopened after being bought by Black Country Ales and refurbished. Three BCA beers on plus about five guests. Hugh fireplace with log fire. Very comfortable pub selling proper ale with a very friendly landlord and landlady. It'll be giving the other real ales pubs in town a run for their money. All good for the real ale consumer !

The Pub, Leicester

You can't fault The Pub for the range of beer that it has on offer. Nice location on New Walk and very pleasant to sit outside and watch the world go by. Deserves to succeed.

The New Plough Inn, Hinckley

Popped in here at Easter as they had a beer festival on. A very good pub with welcoming staff. Hinckley is a bit of an ale desert unless you drink Marstons and it was great to see a pub putting on some different beers from local breweries.

King William IV, Nottingham

Cracking little pub. Good beer selection and reasonable prices. Friendly staff and a good bunch of locals. A bit out of the way but well worth putting yourself out to visit it. Get there for the Australian Beach Aerobics at 4:30pm !

The King John, Nottingham

Closed and tinned up.

Richard III, Leicester

A proper, traditional pub. Ok, the pool table is a bit strange in the front room but it does have a cracking beer garden/smoking area at the side of the building. Also has a dart board which very few pubs have nowadays. Had a few pints of Tiger which was in great form and only 2.50 per pint (30/05/09). A great contrast to the poncy tapas and cafe culture bollox across the road in the Highcross "shopping experience".

The Ship Inn, Leicester

Visited here for the first time yesterday. Cracking little pub with benches outside which provides a good view of the Great Central Railway station. Cheap, well kept beer. Great place and close to town.

The Bell Inn, Nottingham

It's been "renovated" so there isn't much to suggest that it's the oldest inn in the country but it's still a nice place to be. The location is superb on slab square and you can sit outside and watch the trams go by (table service only if you're outside). As at 02/04/2009 the Abbot ale was 2.55 per pint which, given the 5% abv and pub location, is a bargain imho. By far the best pub on the square.

The Globe, Leicester

I've already commented on this pub ,but it's worth another post. Went in there last weekend and had some superb Everard's Pitch Black stout. Who in their right mind would drink Guinness when this is on offer ? Great city centre pub.

The Vat and Fiddle, Nottingham

Got to be one of the best real ale pubs in the country. Large selection of beer and at least five from the excellent Castle Rock range all in tip-top condition. Pretty good prices as well, particularly if you are a regular at Castle Rock pubs and collect the Eight-Ball stickers.

High Cross, Leicester

The best JDW bar in Leicester centre. The smoking ban has improved this bar as they seem to attract more food buying customers now rather than the chain-smoking all-day drinkers. OK, if you get there for breakfast then there'll still be a group of old boys already four pints down studying the racing papers before popping backwards and forwards across the road to the bookies but it doesn't seem to attract the tossers in the same way that the other 'spoons bars in Leicester do. I took the plunge last weekend and bought a pint of Ruddles Best for 1. It was, surprisingly, good for a Green King ale.

Last Plantagenet, Leicester

Within a few minutes walk or crawl you've got the Dawn Centre for the homeless and The Anchor Centre for street drinkers and ex-offenders. Need I go any further in describing the sort of "customers" that this hell-hole attracts ? Avoid at all costs.

Lloyds No 1, Leicester

A huge bar in the normal JDW style. Cheap drinks and food. The prices can attract a certain type of drinker from around the market place. They have seats and tables outside but, bizarrely, you can't take alcoholic drinks outside and sit at them.

The Globe, Leicester

An excellent city centre pub. It's been mucked about with over the years but still retains an old pub feel to it. Still has gas lamps on the walls which are an interesting feature. Excellent priced Tiger bitter as well.

Huntsman, Leicester

As a local I'll say that it isn't too bad on a weekday afternoon. If you venture there on a Friday evening or over the weekend (especially when LCFC are at home) then expect to come out wearing some of the furniture ! It's a shame really as it's a large, old pub which deserves better and the non-savage locals deserve something better from it.

The Soar Point, Leicester

The best feature of this bar has to be the riverside veranda. I tend to go there in the Summer when it's not term time for students. No cask ale but it's very pleasant to sit by the river, watch the wildlife and boats go by and sip a cold beer.

The Criterion, Leicester

If you're looking for the best pub in Leicester for British real ale and foreign beer then this is the one to go to. It beats, by a very short nose, the Swan and Rushes. Lots of live music and a dart board. How many pubs still have dart boards ?

The Shakespeare's Head, Leicester

Lovely, untouched 60s pub. Very close to the main shopping area. Cheap, well kept beer. Friendly staff and regulars. Also has a pub cat. Have a few in here and pop down the road to the Criterium.

Swan and Rushes, Leicester

Excellent range of cask ales, real cider and an enormous range of foreign bottled ale which is supported by a bottled beer menu with tasting notes. Regular cheese and cider festivals as well as German beer festivals. Not to be missed if you're in Leicester.

Sloanes, Leicester

There are three superb real ale pubs in Leicester city centre. Out of The Vaults, Swan and Rushes and The Criterium. I was in the Vaults a couple of weeks ago and I counted 11 or 12 handpumps, half a dozen tap beers (mainly imports), a fridge full of bottles and cider on draft ! Come on, what more could you want ? I can't understand the comments about beer quality. It's always been spot-on for me. The only only negative is the cramped gents toilets. They were probably designed for the volumes associated with wine sippers rather than ale guzzlers.

The Bartons Arms, Aston

A pub that everyone who loves pubs and good beer should visit. A beautiful example of what Britain did build set in an area with some of the worst that Britain has built. Thank goodness that a preservation order was placed on this pub. Beer is fantastic as well.

The Black Eagle, Hockley

A lovely little pub with good beer. Had some Bathams in excellent condition. Staff are very friendly and the food is excellent. I had some very tasty lamb chops (cutlets).

16 Dec 2008 08:20

The Church End Brewery Tap, Nuneaton

This "pub" is a bit off the beaten track but is well worth finding. It's a newish building and is more like a social club with the brewery in a rear room. Fantastic quality/range of beer on offer and you can have a look at the brew kit. Very friendly place but don't go there expecting a traditional style boozer.

16 Dec 2008 08:13

Western, Leicester

A vast improvement since the Steamin Billy takeover. Friendly staff, a real log fire in the Winter months, great beer and some excellent food.

14 Dec 2008 18:55

The Queen Victoria, Leicester

It's a real shame that the Queen Victoria has closed. I had been in half a dozen times and really enjoyed the place and the ale. The Bogtrotter's Beer Festival appeared to be well attended and then....nothing. Finished. I popped along yesterday morning and the pub had the curtains drawn and the Pub To Let sign still up. There is a pile of dozens of casks and kegs visible in the secured backyard.
