The Ship, Soho

Have to agree with Mike Star.
One of the many joys of the Ship is that it doesn't have large groups of roving pub-crawlers, hen- nighters or stag-nighters in it.

The Red Lion and Sun, Highgate Village

Pub has been transformed.

Lovely staff, good beer and wine and good food.

The Red Lion and Sun, Highgate Village

The pub is very welcoming. Friendly staff and good food. The food menu changes monthly.

Somewhere to go for a drink or a meal rather than just a drink and a meal.

The Horseshoe, Hampstead

We visited on a Saturday afternoon and were told there was no food being served untill 6:30 and they were full anyway.

Tried both the Hampstead beers - liked them both.

We only stayed for two drinks though as some of the the clientel were incredibly irritating. One managed to propel a lit match head at me whilst failing to light a cheep charoot and seemed genuinely shocked that I expected an apology. The bar staff sat around smoking and talking loudly on their phones.

I'll go back when the smoking ban kicks in.

The Rose and Crown, Highgate

The change hasn't helped.

This time last year it was hard to get a table on a Saturday - now it's empty.

The management put TVs in for the football and left them there. As a result the atmosphere has deteriorated.

This place could be a goldmine but it has missed by a mile.

The Princess Louise, Holborn

The Princess Louise is a beautiful pub.

The reason it is looking a little jaded is because of the grade 1 listing it has with English Heritage. It was due for a major refurbishment over a year ago but negotiations are taking longer than expected. Once completed it should look exactly the same but more beautiful.

The Flask, Highgate

The Flask is a great pub in winter and hell on earth in the summer when it is full of pretentious prats trying to impress (and failing miserably).

When the food works it's good. Unfortunately two out of three of my last food orders were screwed up and one of the staff was incredibly rude.

Since they permanently closed the lower bar there is no overflow for the huge crowds that are there in the summer. They need a lot more staff for busy periods and a queue system at the bar.

However, in the winter there are nice fires and if it is quiet some of the staff use their initiative and come to your table to take orders, offer 'tastes' of beer if you are not sure which one to go for and take time to chat.

The Holly Bush, Hampstead

Always enjoy the Holly Bush. I just wish fewer people enjoyed it so that I could get a seat.

The Ship, Soho

I've been drinking in The Ship for years. I've always had great service and Charlotte the landlady is a star.

The music is always good and as it gets louder as the night goes on during a Friday or Saturday night I can work out when I should leave (not that I actually do).

I've also taken my retired parents in on a couple of lunchtimes and my father, not a man easily pleased, thought it was a "great pub".
