The Sportsman, Croxley Green

As a boater I obviously visit the pub from the canal. It's a 15 minute wander through the woods to get there but I wouldn't contemplate going anywhere else - it's the polar opposite of chain pubs, a complete one-off, excellent beer, and it's also the place where my son, then aged 11, beat all the adult crew at pool...

The Post Office Arms, Boxmoor

I suspect the younger element in the area regard this as an old gits pub - but as an old git myself, I cherish it. Good ale, friendly service, amiable punters - that's all I need!

The King William IV, Mickleham

Potentially excellent pub spoiled by bossy atmosphere and in particular proliferation of notices warning against pretty much everything (including, perhaps, having a good time). Beer is good. Yes, the food is expensive, but yes, this is Surrey, and a posh bit of it too. If punters didn't pay the prices they'd have to cut them.

The Running Horse, Leatherhead

I'm a regular Fri lunchtime punter here now. Beers are good and food is fine but the Taylors Landlord isn't on as often as it might me. Seems slightly understaffed. But it is a proper local.

The Warrington Hotel, Maida Vale

Ben's Thai is just stupendous and the whole deal is excellent in an area where you somehow just don't expect to chance across a really good pub.

The Dolphin, Uxbridge

Friendly, good value food, excellent ale despite previous comment, needs a better mooring if after canal trade but this may be out of their hands.

The Swan and Bottle, Uxbridge

Manager very helpful re car parking when I was moving my boat recently, could easily have told me to bog off but didn't,has a customer now. Nice atmosphere, don't normally care for chef & brewer stylee but this one's sound.

The General Eliott, Uxbridge

Rumoured change of licensee Autumn 04 - surviving customers v shabby but cheerful Nov 04 after a 'good night', no ale but Guinness ok.

The White Horse, Harefield

A misjudged refurb with drinkers marginalised and bored, self-regarding staff who don't understand ale.

The Running Horses, Mickleham

Trouble is that average punter hereabouts isn't very critical-hence, food good but not as good as it thinks it is, cliquey bar, impersonal as licensees very frequently not seen at the coalface, leaving this to efficient but uninvolved staff.

The Bear, Oxshott

Certainly true that the pub is less busy than previously, but basic bar food is still good value, Aussie staff are absurdly efficient and the beer is invariably good, so what's to dislike?

The Running Horse, Leatherhead

new licensees, jury out.

Penny Black, Leatherhead

Now back to being the Penny Black again after a period as the Hogshead. Youngs Brewery are on the case. Improvements already in beer, ambience, service.
