The Eight Bells, Putney Bridge

A fabulous pub, discovered by a rugby club outing to Twickenham staying locally. Good choice of beers - Spitfire, London Pride and Doombar regrettably not in the best of condition, but an extremely welcoming pub - both staff and punters. When we stay in Putney next year for rugby this will be our base. Better quality beer would have got a 9/10

Royal Artillery Arms, Highbridge

Shut pending the planning application to knock it down and build houses - another boozer bites the dust

Re - visited the pub this week. Different selection of ales and a different day time barman, but this one also knew his stuff. Still as good as ever!

The Crossways Inn, Highbridge

An absolutely amazing beer festival this weekend - beers from all over the country. Looking forward to next August Bank Holiday already !

The Puriton Inn, Bridgwater

A friendly pub with a good balance between the food trade ( lots of locals eat here)and wet sales. Unfortunately a boring choice of beers on offer (Exmoor Ale, 6X and Otter Bitter - all well kept) at the nose bleeding starting price of 3.40 a pint for the cheapest. This is allegedly because of the zoning - the other Polden Hills pubs charge similar prices. I could put up with that price if some of the better beers from those breweries were on offer (for example, Henrys IPA, Exmoor Fox and Otter Bright) but thats just a personal view. Voted 7/10 - would be a nine with better selection and more realistically priced beer

The Guest House, Southport

Rated this pub 9 for the last twelve months until a recent visit when I was served Butcombe Bitter (brewed just down the hill from Bristol Airport) through a sparkler. That is no way to serve a west country beer designed to be pulled straight off the barrel with no pipes or beer engines in between never mind frothing all the life out of it. The other (northern) beers were excellent even with a sparkler on but please landlady ask the brewery how it should be served first!

Baron's Bar, Southport

A good range of beers at a good price but why do they assume everything has to go through the inevitable sparkler. Northern beers that are designed for this, yes, but not southern beers - it knocks all the flavour and body out of them - its sacrilegous to get a good souythern beer put in front of you like it needs a flake in it. Shame on you CAMRA for supporting any pub that does this

Old Ship Inn, Sidmouth

Yet another pub hits the dust - went into Sidmouth yesterday for a pint in the Ship to find it's now a Costa.
RIP

The Anchor Inn, Sidmouth

As a restaurant probably very good - as a pub rather bland - like a previous commentator I just couldn't warm to it - four real ales all much of a muchness - with four pumps I would have expected more variety i.e. a session, a dark, a strong and a light and hoppy. All were in good enough condition though.

The Dove Inn, Hammersmith

Went to this pub on 17th March killing time before going on to Twickenham, along with ten colleagues (sorry if you were there we were a bit noisy) and ended up spending longer than we should have, only just getting to the match in time. Excellent choice of good quality ales and rapid service even with a big round. Very friendly. Didn't eat so can't comment on food. Cetainly worth going back to.

The Lion Hotel, Dulverton

A very dog friendly pub / hotel with a good selection of beers (usually at least one Cotleigh on, plus others) Only criticism is that it doesn't open 'till 6pm on a Saturday and thus misses out on my 'early doors' trade whilst the wife is otherwise engaged shopping etc. There's usually a queue outside by 6pm as well.

The Guest House, Southport

Just a quickie to clarify westbound - was not criticising west country beers just the fact that in the west country they are often overpriced and poorly kept. Guest House my favourite pub in North West

If more pubs were like this there would be fewer closing down! Excellent beers, knowledgeable bar staff and good prices (especially impressive to someone who is used to 3.40 a pint in the West Country for generally less well kept beer)

This pub is an example to all other local licensees, and is the yardstick by which I judge other pubs by. An impressive range of beers sold honestly - if the bar staff don't think a beer is quite ready, or is slightly 'spoilt' they will tell you and offer an alternative. The refurbishment has been outstanding, the food is excellent......what more can I say

The Red River Inn, Gwithian

Was staying in the area and only pooped in for a quick pint on the first evening - ended up going in every day for 'early doors'. Was so impressed thast I didn't bother going in any of the other local pubs.I believe this pub changed hands in May 2011 so can't comment about it before, but I received excellent service, enjoyed good quality beer and good food, both at realistic prices. Was particularly impressed with the vitality of the bar and waiting staff, and one of the lads behind the bar really knew his beers, and was recommending other local brews to me. The decor is unpretentious basic - reminded me of the pubs of my youth in the '70's, but immacultely clean and no juke box or fruit machine.
