V Bar, Colchester

i have actually never been in this place. my friend went there a couple of weeks ago and he witnessed a lady get punched in the face and knocked out right outside the door. rightly the bouncer reacted immediately. but i dont want any of that on a night out ...... but people go there for something.

Twisters Cafe Bar, Colchester

I have much fun in here. true the toilets are appalling but the times there are great. drinks selection is very wide especially if you like your spirits. can't believe from previous comments thats how twisters used to be. thank god its not anymore! bar staff are quite fun sometimes you get a serious one or two. bouncers are good with I.D. the outside part is where i like to be with all my friends, last month all of twisters was singing happy birthday for my friends 20th! amazing times. is a little pricey, and the bouncers sometimes dont cover any trouble that may happen inside properly. but its rare trouble happens in there. good times.

The Purple Dog, Colchester

i agree with magic kitten. it is a great pub to socialise in, the prices are a little bit steep on some things but it is a punch tavern. who charge their tenants extortionate prices and rent. but for all my friends and new people that i meet in there its worth it. good times!

The Playhouse, Colchester

Yet another weatherspoons, ive been here a few times, i thinks its ok when i get a seat. the queues are stupidly long, they never have enough staff. granted they are cheap but out of all the recent times i have gone out i have never been. may do sometime in the future. i just think i enjoy my time at other places and all the people i bump into now are the same.

The Fox and Fiddler, Colchester

Not really been in here to many times, nice little pub especially right near the high street. good music in there and good beer and lager choices. i can imagine that the atmosphere is enhanced the more people go in, ive only been in during the day so there arent that many people in. A pub that backs our boys, the paras. Friendly staff aswell. Good pub.

Also to my fellow critic. Stating 2.70 a pint of ale. beer prices go up annually from brewers, plus the lovely cancellors budget constantly beats the price with duty increases. A pub must pay its way with bills somehow and that is the only way. i would still pay it.

Ye Olde Marquis, Colchester

I have been to the Marquis on a number of occasions, for me it is very much a student pub that is good for the older clientel aswell. i find sometimes that it is completly rammed at times where you cant sit down, or you cant hear conversations with your friends. Tables are sometimes neglected, sticky and coverd in bottles and rubbish. lager is ok, and certainly with the lager selection it is definately scottish and newcastle tied.

unfortunately to my fellow critic scottish and newcastle do not go to great lengths of investing much time in brands that are taken over. the mcewans brewing has been left to the caledonian brewers to continue and seeing as GK IPA is dirt cheap down in the south if you are not an ale brewer your standard ale will be GK.

So it leaves caledonian up north with only few national distributors doing scot cos work. but fair game to scot co for keeping the brands take overs lead to the majority of brands destroyed and forgotten.

Also for my fellow critic, unless there are two cellars which is very rare. (ie one with cellar cooling and the other without). All kegs and casks are placed in the same room. difference with lager is that it is passed through a remote cooler and chilled all the way to dispense. Ale is just one line straight from cask to pump.

All in all not a bad pub i still go there every now and then. but its not amazing.
