The Theydon Oak, Coopersale

Excellent food, friendly staff and Black Sheep on tap. I'm in pub heaven! If only it were walking distance away - we always need a designated driver. :-(

The Faltering Fullback, Finsbury Park

I'm dropping my rating slightly as "panhead" is sadly correct. It is now over-popular. Still very pleasant on a quieter evening though and Pat who runs the place is a top bloke!

The Sloop Inn, St Ives

Very pleasant, cosey little pub.

Billie Jeans, Epping

Popped in here for a pint the other day. Was curious as I always walk past the place.

In short, it's a youth club. Shame. Could be good, but it's full of teenagers, shouting, running back and forth from the toilets, fighting with each other. Awful. And that was a Tuesday!! I dread to think what Saturday must be like.

The Jolly Waggoners, Much Hadham

If this is the pub I'm thinking of (and I think it is the pub I'm thinking of!) then we had a cracking Sunday lunch here once. Good food, friendly staff, good beer, nice country pub. :-)

The Three Kings, Clerkenwell

To digress slightly, sod Soho, leave Leicester Square, say "See Ya!" to The City, move over Mayfair, shove off Shoreditch (I'm running out of ideas now...), etc. - Farringdon is my favourite part of London for a pint. It's got everything.

And this is my (current) favourite Farringdon pub. I can't put my finger on anything in particular, but I'm a picky punter and I Just Like It!

Be warned, cash only. Go to the bank first.

The Landseer, Holloway

Dearest Rolando,

Some time ago you wrote this about my review:
"Whoever is complaining about the staff, do not know what is he talking bout! TALK NICELY & YOU WILL BE TREATED NICELY!"

Thanks for the life lesson. I don't know where the world would be without people of your superior intelligence and social abilities, not to mention your excellent grasp of written English.

No, wait. What I meant to say was I hate people like you on review sites and message boards who don't read posts properly and go off on an ill-informed rant for no reason whatsoever. You idiots are the bane of the Internet.

Anyways, read my review again please. Then you will realise I was talking about ONE SINGLE MEMBER OF STAFF who is probably back at uni in Bradford or something by now anyway. I sincerely hope so, because she was (and probably still is, wherever she's working) extremely rude.

Manager = Pleasant
MOST Staff = Pleasant
Decor = Pleasant
Food = Ok, but pricey

As my original review said. Still 6/10 - better OR cheaper food/beer please to get a better rating.

Cheers!

The Admiral Rodney, Southwell

Bit too cramped, smokey, busy and noisy for my liking. Always has been. That said, it's popular for a good reason. It is a nice pub, well run. Just never been my cup of tea. Don't get me wrong, I like a bit of atmosphere, but I tend to avoid pubs where you can't move without nudging someone else's drinking arm. I much prefer it on a quiet afternoon - best avoided on Friday/Saturday, unless you're looking for a large crowd and a long wait to get served...

The Bramley Apple, Southwell

This has changed hands so many times in recent years I've lost track. Not sure who owns it right now. BUT, it's always been a good pub. It used to be THE place to go to catch a good blues band on a Saturday night, but then it was sold. Went gastro-pub for a while, which was fairly doomed to fail from the get-go, in spite of the nice new decor. Next chap to take it on brought back good English stodgy food and live music. As I say, not sure who has it right now, but it's definitely changed owners again - but still serving Springhead Bitter, which is not a bad thing, in my humble opinion! :-)

The Saracens Head, Southwell

Not bad. Used to be a bit smokey, but no smoking area now. Sometimes the beer is a bit funny. Don't know why!

The Crown and Thistle, Great Chesterford

We stayed in Great Chesterford for a wedding a week or so ago and this is where we landed first. I really liked this pub. The landlord and locals were really friendly, the food was GREAT (I had a steak and ale pie ... Mmmmm!) and we even stayed the night, awaking to a cracking cooked breakfast! I have to say, the guest 'facilities' aren't the best but it's clean and cheap (25 a head) so you can't say fairer than that. Absolutely no complaints and plenty of praise here! :-)

The George and Dragon, Epping

This pub is alright. It's a bit too "new" looking for my tastes, but the staff were friendly and the atmosphere was ok. I won't be a regular though. I like The Black Lion too much. It has real character about it (and characters within it!)

The Angel, Tower Hill

I really like this pub and I'm not sure why. It's one of those places that doesn't look nice but somehow is. It's a 'proper' pub! That's what it is.

The Crutched Friar, Tower Hill

Not bad. A bit chainy, as already stated, but comfortable enough. It does the job.

The Cheshire Cheese, Tower Hill

Very very loud man at the bar. Made me want to kill him. Think he'd had about 8 pints. Hope he was sick on his suit and missed his stop on the way home.

Average pub.

The Landseer, Holloway

LOL @ Mick Hucknall (nice one Sameagainplease - remember him well - he was alright though, to be fair...)

I'm not sure whether to leave my rating at a 7 or take it down to a 6. Food is still 'ok' but a little over priced for ok fare.

Last orders policy still sucks too, or rather, the way some staff choose to apply it. Since I last went they seem to have hired an AWFUL barmaid, the attitude of which I've only ever seen in The Lansdowne (see multiple scathing reviews of that snob pit by using the site search feature ;-) - it's like being served by someone's sulky teenage daughter who's just been grounded. And hang on to your pint, because if you're not guarding it carefully she'll sweep it away at 11:01, even if it's still half full! And for some reason, even though all the other staff seem perfectly civil, I always seem to get the part-Goth sulk monster. Bollocks!

I don't like pubs that make you feel like they're doing you a favour by letting you drink there. The (now not-so-)new manager seems like a nice chap. As do most of the bar staff, who are nice, but I have to say not only does this one barmaid really grip my shit, I always seem to get served by her.

You know what. 6 it is! Get rid of the barmaid and improve the food and you'll get an easy 8. Hire another barmaid like that and you're sliding to a 4.

The Princess of Wales, Primrose Hill

I too think this is a smashing pub. Good, inexpensive food, quiet in a good way (as in no posey tw*ts), lots of light in summer and a cosey fire in winter. As someone posted under The Lansdown, walk straight past it and come in here - it is everything The Lansdown isn't, thankfully!!

The Garnon Bushes, Coopersale

Nice pub in the little village of Coopersale, about a mile from Epping towards North Weald on a side road. Really lovely staff, GREAT Sunday roast and friendly locals. It seemed quite a 'locals' pub, but in a nice way. Got chatting to a chap at the bar and everyone seems really friendly. There's a restaurant attached too, and if the pub's Sunday lunch is anything to go by, the restaurant can't be bad!

18 Jul 2005 14:36

The Black Lion, Epping

Reportedly the oldest pub in Epping, it's a cute, friendly place with a snug feel and a nice bunch of locals and staff. Apparently there's a cracking fire burning in the grate all winter too!

18 Jul 2005 14:31

The Forest Gate Inn, Epping

Bacon and egg sarnies for 2! Can't go wrong. Went there on Sunday. Staff seem really friendly and apparently the owner is a tree surgeon who we can buy logs off for our stove (yet to verify this - a local told us...) But anyway, top place.
