The Goose on the Market, Croydon

I'd walked past this place countless times but always given it a wide berth. the way that they always seem to have a bouncer on the door no matter what the time or day made me worry that it might be a really rough/dangerous place.

But then ended up in there by chance recently and was very pleasantly surprised. Not a whiff of menace at all in there, a perfectly decent place, with the patrons being a really mixed crowd, right across the ages & gender spectrum.

The drink in there is seriously cheap & seems to be of a perfectly acceptable quality.

Only slight gripe was music a bit too loud but then I suppose this was a Friday night...

The Manor Arms, Streatham

A pretty good place overall.

Main pros - beer selection, interior, very child-friendly. .

Main cons - food prices, for a single course they seem just that bit over the top [on a Sunday I think that the cheapest main was £15.50].

Very good.

There are a few nice little touches like board games, wireless internet, a good baby changing room, and so on but the best things about this place are very simple - it's cosy, friendly, just all-round very pleasant really...

The Windsor Castle, Clapham Junction

I met a friend here for a post-work Friday drink, just because it's close to the station, but ended up staying till closing time.

I liked it here quite a lot. The decor is decicedly ropy, very unconvincingly mock tudor and the carpet near the bar smells a bit funny, but the beer & lager were very good and fresh-tasting and the clientele a good bunch, a proper mix of different types which is all too rare in the area.

There seemed to be a bit of a karaoke session going on, with, in addition to the usual drunken jokers, a handful of what seemed to be dedicated karaoke hustlers, which was a bit intimidating, but good fun none the less..

Blithe Spirit, Balham

My father in law loves this place for some reason. He drags me here every time he comes down to stay. And I think it's pretty OK. You can usually get a seat, and it has a perfectly good selecton of lagers. Reasonably often when I go there I'm served by a really, really, hot slighty goth-ish barmaid, which cheers me up no end.

The Moon Under Water, Balham

This place is anywhere near as bad as the other reviewers on here would have you believe. It's probably not the venue for you if you're looking to create a big impression on a first date with a glamorous lady, but it's perfectly OK in a london wetherspoons way.

I go in here for a quick pint or two maybe once every couple of months, and in its favour it's very cheap, is clean, has sport on TV, the bar staff are usually good, and there's a perfectly decent range of well kept beers & lagers.

Motley crew they may be but I've never once detected even a faint hint of menace from any of the patrons in here, even on the one or two occasions that I've [shamefully] snuck in & out without buying a drink after going for an evening in the centre of town and arrived at Balham station bursting for the gents.

Balham Bowls Club, Balham

this place isn't really my cup of tea at all but i find comments about "rude" staff surprising - i've found them to be maybe a bit scruffy and laid back, but perfectly ok overall and, if anything, perhaps a little friendlier than average.

The Clarence, Balham

Glad to hear that the selection of beers has been thought out. Maybe it's just that I personally am not a massive fan of budvar.

I've been here again though and did especially enjoy a reasonably priced vegetarian hot dog.

Make no mistake about it, this is a good place. It is busy on a Sunday lunchtime, but not so far to the point where it's too difficult to get a table or service becomes unacceptably slow.

I went there this Sunday and was reasonably impressed.

Pretty good, reasonably priced, food, good service, and decent atmosphere.

The selection of draft beers seemed to be leaning a little bit too far towards "novelty" lines [e.g. the white/blonde/raspberry beers] at the expense of perhaps a couple of good solid premium lagers, but good overall I'd say.
