The Skylark, Croydon

The pub goes from strength to strength. The clientele are not the usual Spoons wierdos and the staff are all very pleasant. Clearly very well managed.

Wilson Mac, you must have the wrong pub! Nobody wears a suit!!

No posts for 3 years or more! Says it all........Loudly!!

13 Feb 2012 16:09

Gardeners, Southfields

Good pub (NOT little!), nice atmosphere and reasonable prices. Beer well looked after. Will use when in the area. 7, pushing 8 /10.

The Red Deer, South Croydon

A pub that needs bouncers? Nice!

The Royal Standard, Croydon

New manageress, more like a landlady, young but knows her stuff. An improvement on an already very good pub!

30 Nov 2011 12:29

The Star, Dorking

Elfhelp, sorry about your elfin friend. As a regular does she like the pub or is it just the closest? Hope all goes well for her in hospital.

The Star, Dorking

So don't go mandraker, this is not a difficult concept is it? In my experience Croydon is no different to anywhere else in the southeast.....Except parts of Kent!
This is a good pub!

Brewmason, if you're asking me, yes they are! It is what it is and if they want a great big pub with no soul there are places in town they could choose instead. What is wrong with taking your BYO leftovers to the bar or taking them home or to the litterbin? There are so many pubs in Dorking I don't understand the need to slag off a good pub because it is small or allows you to BYO and not have to buy their own micro stuff. The staff are good in every way and the customers are decent and varied (yes some are odd, but interesting mostly). I don't live locally but have often visited all the pubs here and always drink in this pub whenever I'm around. I also drink in JDW pubs and enjoy doing so.......but bloody hell, Vive la Difference!!

Well you did ask!

tempest and randolf7, posted same day 1/2 an hour apart! Issues? Bad day? Been somewhere else before? Assuming you won't be hurrying back....Hooray. I really hope people ignore these posts and judge on ALL of the others!

25 Oct 2011 17:14

The Mitre, Anerley

Could be a good pub BUT about as unwelcoming as it is possible to be! Not enough regulars customers so should make a special effort when someone else wants a drink!

6 Sep 2011 12:51

The Ship, Croydon

Nice place worth a visit (pick your time if you're not into the music). Good beer.

6 Sep 2011 12:41

The Goose on the Market, Croydon

Difficult to be complimentary about this pub other than 4 better pubs nearby!

6 Sep 2011 12:35

The Treehouse, Croydon

OK......No ale, staff good enough, punters very friendly, nice selection of wine and lager and a nice enough garden.....Not really a pub but will definitely go back for those type of occasions.

6 Sep 2011 12:25

The Crown and Sceptre, South Croydon

No Happy Hour and no Sky................Sounds like a pub to me. Slerpy, 0/10? Time for you're repeat prescription!

6 Sep 2011 12:10

The George, Croydon

In yesterday lunch, Jaipur slightly hazy replaced with another pint, same thing, replaced with an excellent Hepworth's Prospect (had a few!) all handled professionally and without any fuss. Well done!

The Queen Victoria, Rottingdean

Dunno! Nice pub, nice staff....Limited ales (ale, Harveys Best) and limited food. We were three handed on Sunday lunchtime a fortnight or so ago and the bar was half empty (Grand Prix on the TV), but the garden was very busy and seemed to be eating Sunday lunch, not the Caribbean. Nice enough garden. Designated driver HATED the so-called coffee with something akin to milk! The regulars seemed OK if a bit in-your-face. If this was an offish day it'll be a good pub. Will go back as not really much else here. Sounds like a not good review but I don't want it to be. A choice of ale would up the mark so..........6/10

22 Aug 2011 15:07

The Running Horse, Leatherhead

I fish the river fairly often and have been to all the local pubs at different times. This probably is the best pub in Leatherhead.......but that 'aint saying much, which is a shame because it's a nice town. It is too pricey and the staff do tend to not quite ignore non-regulars. Nice place, nice beer/cyder and food (sometimes). I do hope the management read the posts on this site, could turn a run of the mill pub to The Best Pub in Leatherhead quite easily. Nice setting!

19 Aug 2011 15:06

The Sportsman 'Time Well Spent', Mogador

Nice pub, good selection of ale/cyder well kept, modern pub grub well cooked/served. Perfect for a few at lunchtime/late afternoon. A bit isolated but a nice walk anyway. Recommended!

19 Aug 2011 14:29

Moon Under Water, Norbury

Been a few times now. Proper pub, properly managed (not all 'spoons are!). Good ale selection (to be expected) and all nicely kept. Well done AleenaB!

19 Aug 2011 14:13

Wheatsheaf, West Wickham

In midweek lunchtime, a bit grubby from an early start at work. Wonderful welcome, good beer, good food! Recent re-dec I think. Will definately use again (even if not really that close to it). These people are getting it right. Good luck.

17 Aug 2011 16:33

The Dog and Bull, Croydon

OMG I'm agreeing with The Slerp.........must go for a lay down!!

17 Aug 2011 13:57

The Star, Dorking

I agree with Whiez, 'cept I gave it 9. Would be 10 if only 1 more good ale! About the best pub I've been in. I travel many miles to drink here. Well done to the management and staff......and the customers!!

17 Aug 2011 13:42

The Treehouse, Croydon

Wife back on thursday with different one of the girls. Came back trollied having had a great evening!! I must make more of an effort to use on a regular basis for a while!

14 Aug 2011 08:44

The Surrey Cricketers, Croydon

Cannot get on with this pub, It is a nice building and could be good. "Local pub for local people" is the phrase that springs to mind. The food is good I'm told as is the entertainment but they just can't keep an ale, which is important in a pub!

14 Aug 2011 08:38

The Bulls Head, Croydon

OK pub with a real old fashioned Landlord. Good selection of ales (and lager) well kept at reasonable prices. A few...characters...from time to time but harmless. Festival at the end of August, getting on for 20 beers and a couple of cyders, Worth a visit.
Stayed open when all else closed after the riots, good effort (if somewhat profitable)!

14 Aug 2011 08:27

Saints and Sinners, Croydon

Took a knock during the "riots", wish them well. Nice pub, get a lot right here.

11 Aug 2011 12:52

The Dog and Bull, Croydon

IT IS JUST TOO EXPENSIVE!! And for what? Nice garden..................

11 Aug 2011 12:46

The Alma Tavern, Croydon

Mate and I were in for a few on Wednesday lunchtime...The only customers....The barmaid and her friends (and a baby) were watching daytime TV on the wrong side of the bar, so as we were an inconvenience the service was brusque....The beer choice was limited and not cheap...Barmaid went back to her friends...We went to The Oval!

This could be a nice pub, it's a nice building with all the makings but if prospective new regulars wanting to spend money are made to feel this unwanted it has no chance "in the current climate". I hope we had an off day because we need to keep our pubs open.

8 Aug 2011 08:52

Drum and Monkey, Croydon

First time in here for years. Not much has changed! But clean and tidy, beer good and very pleasant and helpful staff. Will be back.

8 Aug 2011 08:34

The Treehouse, Croydon

My wife and her best friend were here midweek, a few halves of bitter and wine with food in the garden. Good atmosphere (more customers than expected), good beer/wine and good food. Good, well done!

8 Aug 2011 08:26

Moon Under Water, Norbury

Agree with Gary1957. Been a few times now, pleasant pub and the regulars say the place has brightened up since the new manageress has settled in. Has more of a "Pub" feel than some 'spoons.

20 Jun 2011 14:15

The Croham Arms, South Croydon

New carpet, like a posh pub!

28 Apr 2011 11:15

The Skylark, Croydon

Klingon, you must have been on the Oakwoods Perry to be thanking The Slerp!!

4 Apr 2011 13:14

Moon Under Water, Norbury

Can't rate the place yet though!

4 Apr 2011 13:10

Moon Under Water, Norbury

New Manageress on the way, knows her stuff, will be good!

4 Apr 2011 13:06

The Crown and Sceptre, South Croydon

Best pub in the local area (and there are a few!). The ales have always been well kept in the 8 or 9 years I've been using it, and it is well known for good food. Nice range of beer/wine and a jovial atmosphere, is well run(the leasee {if there is such a word} has many years doing this schtik). HOWEVER Fullers prices!! Unusual booth arrangement in the main bar, not unlike a pub up the road where the same beer is considerably cheaper. Still, high rating!

10 Mar 2011 14:21

The Crown and Pepper, Croydon

Have been back under protest and was pleasantly surprised! I was welcomed and the food was good, limited range of beer but a nice buzz about the place. May go back for lunch and a pint, but no rush.

4 Mar 2011 12:13

The Salutation Inn, East Looe

Best pub in the area. I like the way you go back in time when you walk through the door!

22 Feb 2011 13:23

Dog and Crook, Braishfield

Enjoyed the pub, comfy, staff seemed pleased to see us (we're not from round here) but we were team handed! Good slection of beer and some lovely cyder (personally, the London Pride is unneccessary). Food excellent if a bit slow. Outside in the summer for an afternoon methinks!
Watch out for the rooks disappearing down the chimneys next door and popping out off others, magic after a couple!!

22 Feb 2011 12:41

The Hare and Hounds, Sway

Ditto to the previous posts. Good range of ale/cyder well kept, good food (the ploughmans has been mentioned, quite rightly!) and staff happy to serve!! Family friendly. Good old fashioned country hospitality. The rating is deserved.

22 Feb 2011 12:08

The George, Fordingbridge

Nice pub but seems to favour feeding tourists, for obvious reasons I guess. Great in the sunshine sitting by the river watching the HUGE chub.
Could do better!

22 Feb 2011 11:52

The Crown and Pepper, Croydon

I try not to give bad reviews...So I won't!

22 Feb 2011 11:38

The John O'Gaunt Inn, Hungerford

This has always been a good pub, let's hope it continues to be.

22 Feb 2011 11:10

The Hare and Hounds, Lingfield

Stopped in after a mornings fishing on a rather drab Tuesday lunch. Loved it! Good beer, friendly staff, interesting decor. The place got really busy with a lot of food being sold (don't know if it's always so). Will go out of my way to drink here!

22 Feb 2011 10:50

The Croham Arms, South Croydon

The man's name is Aiden and he only has one pub as far as I know, was drinking with him Saturday elsewhere in town.

22 Feb 2011 07:56

The Ship of Fools, Croydon

First time here yesterday (Monday) 12 till 4 with a fellow drinker. We found it to be very pleasant. Staff all polite and chatty and a large selection of ales of which we sampled a few and all were on form. Worth a visit if in the area or waiting for a train!

22 Feb 2011 07:48

The Skylark, Croydon

Oh Dear God!

18 Feb 2011 11:30

The Skylark, Croydon

Trip to the Dorking brewery soon 15 inl. travel (I think) and a Dark Star event upstairs for 7.50.

15 Feb 2011 16:25

The Kings Arms, Mayfair

Popped in on what I thought was going to be a quiet lunchtime. Far from it! Busy little pub with an upstairs bar (for eating and drinking). Decent selection of ales and the food looked good and judging by the sales must have been! Understand MayfairDandy about the high tables and chairs (I hate them) but I didn't get the "Chain Feel". Friendly barstaff, well managed. Not my neck of the woods and Mayfair prices but will use when in town.

30 Dec 2010 15:59

The Oval Tavern, Croydon

I know one of the new landlords well, they will not be changing anything. A confirmed ale drinker also!

12 Oct 2010 13:00

The Star, Dorking

I love this pub, all sorts of people and goings on! GK IPA and Speckled Hen, I have the latter and is good. V. Friendly and helpful staff. Well worth a visit.

26 Apr 2010 08:45

The Royal Standard, Croydon

Without trying to annoy anyone, is there a decent pub garden in Croydon anymore? Would like to enjoy a lunchtime or two in the sun.

23 Apr 2010 08:51

The Royal Standard, Croydon

Slerpy, did you go to the festival? 15 or so guest ales from all over Britain. Great success and I'm looking forward to the next one (January I believe).
