The Castle Tavern, Richmond

Gave it a go. Arrived 7pm told it was closing and the last local drunk was throwing up in the bar. I'm quite pleased it was closing with any luck it will be permanent. Two of the worst pubs in the world are in in Richmond this being one.

The Bishop Blaize, Richmond

WOW - what a change of management can do for a place. new bods in , Paul and Graham, starting selling real ale - and damn good ale too - sometimes two pumps which is great for the desert of ale that is Richmond. AND it isnt the monopolistic Black Sheep. Bob, seriously mate give it a go again. One of the friendliest welcomes you are gonna receive in Richmond. Oh did I mention the great ale too!!!

Goat, Frognall

What can I say - truly carcking place - it only loses marks for being a bit foodiefied but still ale choice incredible for rural pub - excellent quality - 2 ciders - from Westons- plus at least one other keg in addition to the usual keg nonsense (John Smiths). Large menu betrays large freezers but still this is rural lincs/cambs and at least some stuff sourced locally - not fine dining but good enough. Did I say the real ale was fantastic!!!!!

The Talbot Hotel, Richmond

The only pub I've been in - on 4 continents - that i have actually refused to pay for my drinks and walked out - black sheep was not even vaguely clear and the "cider" served to my colleague was actually undrinkable. Shame could be a lovely place.

The Golden Lion, Richmond

Oh dear - undrinkable real ale - even the keg guiness is terrible - not eaten there but last time i was in 2 groups of 4 were harrassing the barman for a full refund. Nuff said.

The Holly Hill Inn, Sleegill

Cracking pub this - stumbled upon it after a trip to the nearby town of leyburn. Beer very good ( although limited to Black Sheep or Theakston's Best on the real ale front). Staff friendly and obliging, rugby liking landlord(excuse his golf habit), locals friendly - if occassionally a little quirky but hang on this is north yorks what do you expect.

Food in both bar and separate restaurant is exceptional and the homemade chips ideal to soak up the aforementioned black sheep on a saturday afternoon visit. Not populated by millions of squaddies despite its proximity to garrison.

Well worth a visit or 7 - 9 out of 10 ( one pint knocked off for no real ale variety - or am I being picky here?)
