The Hop and Friar, Shrewsbury

Called into the Hop & Friar Saturday afternoon (first time in yonks I've visited this place) and it was quite good. Staff helpful and nice atmosphere, and they now have HD TV screens around the pub (showing Sky Sports News when I was in there), so looks like I have another pub to watch football or Formula One in! A good experience overall, and this place is very much back on my `Favourite Pubs in Town Cenre' list.

The White Horse Inn, Shrewsbury

I hadn't been to the White Horse for a good few years so on Monday whilst around that area of town I decided to check it out. Seems now to be a family & meal-orientated place with a big long seating area to the right as you walk in, and was quite busy when I arrived. Had 2 pints of Foster's which were very good. Only real complaint was the music - they were playing a Celine Dion CD!
Overall quite promising but can be better.

The Corbet Arms, Uffington

The Corbet Arms has reopened after undergoing a huge makeover. I dropped by yesterday afternoon and a very good job has been done. There's a small bar area and a huge louge area for diners, along with doors at the back which lead out to a wooden balcony and an absolutely spectacular view of Shropshire. There were a few customers in when I arrived including a group of elderly people there for a meal. I had 3 pints of Carling and while the first and last were good, the second was a bit flat but I'll forgive them. Overall, a very nice pub, particularly for diners & I can see myself coming here again.

The Armoury, Shrewsbury

Called into the Armoury again earlier this afternoon and enjioyed 4 pints of Carling. First pint was a bit flat but the others were spot on. Some birthday do's were going on here as well. This is still a good place to visit for all types - real ale drinkers, lager drinkers and those who want a excellent meal and some wine to wash it down with.

Salopian Bar, Shrewsbury

Called into Salopian Bar again earlier this afternoon and enjoyed 4 pints of Carling whilst watching the Netherlands v Japan & Ghana v Australia World Cup matches and also the annual Shrewsbury Carnival which passed outside. A quite brilliant way to spend a sunny afternoon in Shrewsbury!

19 Jun 2010 19:09

The Plough Inn, Shrewsbury

Been past this place a few times recently and looks like it's now going to be an Internet Cafe or some sort of computer shop. Another British pub has bitten the dust it seems.

27 May 2010 19:31

The Red Lion, Shrewsbury

Went to this wonderful pub again last night (as I so often do on a Monday) and enjoyed 4 pints of Foster's plus a steak dinner and the weekly quiz to test the old grey matter. Got 29 out of a possible 40 which was not bad but not brilliant either - oh well better luck next time. This has to be one of the best pubs in all of Shrewsbury - try and visit it if you can.

11 May 2010 13:05

The Hole In The Wall, Shrewsbury

Visited Hole in the Wall again earlier this afternoon and enjoyed 4 pints of Carling with some steak and chips. Delicious! I've always enjoyed coming here over the years and despite the negative remarks from other BITE members this place has always been a mainstay on my list of Favourite Pubs in Shrewsbury town centre.

Montgomery's Tower, Shrewsbury

SILENTBUTDEADLY HAS TURNED TO THE DARK SIDE! Visited Montgomery's Tower this afternoon but it was SO HOT today I had 3 pints of FOSTER'S plus a steak & chips meal. Very nice experience indeed and I'll keep coming back to this wonderful place. Don't know when I'll be back on the real ale - could be tomorrow, a few weeks, months or possibly even - NEVER!

22 Apr 2010 16:47

The Coach and Horses, Shrewsbury

Popped into Coach & Horses yesterday afternoon to see if it's as good as what other BITE members are making it out to be, and It 's quite a nice place overall. Staff were qiute freindly and a very good choice of real ales on offer. I had a pint of Shropshire Gold, then a pint of Red House (forgotten name of brewery)and finally a pint of Spitting Feathers' 1862, all were very pleasant beverages. It's a good place for real-ale enthusiasts to visit, and will probably call in again in the near future.

28 Mar 2010 12:20

The Wheatsheaf, Shrewsbury

Visited the Wheatsheaf again yesterday afternoon but most of the guest ales on offer were between 4.5% - 6.0% which were a bit strong for that time of day for me so I had 3 pints of Banks's instead which were very good indeed. Still recommend visiting this pub to all BITE members.

7 Mar 2010 11:30

The Bulls Head, Shrewsbury

This pub has improved a bit since I last visited (can't remember when that was). There was a mix of young and older customers in when I dropped by earlier today, and the older clientele didn't seem to mind the hip-hop and dance remixes that was on the jukebox. Had 2 pints of Banks's which were good but not special. An average pub overall, but I'm afriad the Bull's Head doesn't make my list of `Favourite Shrewsbury Pubs'.

15 Jan 2010 19:58

The Crown Inn, Shrewsbury

Excellent riverside pub in Longden Coleham. Dropped by on Boxing Day and very nice it was too. Enjoyed 4 pints of Banks's Bitter which were very good. Got very busy by 5pm due to Liverpool v Wolves game on TV. Overall , a very nice place to come for a few drinks and enjoy some footie. I'll definitely call again.

28 Dec 2009 13:19

The Armoury, Shrewsbury

Called into the Armoury again yesterday afternoon. Very busy as there were a few Chrismas do's going on, so I simply propped up the bar. A wide range of real ales on display as usual, and I had a pint of Adnam's, then a pint of Merry Hound, and finally a pint of the resident ale here, Shropshire Gold. This is still a good place to visit if you like real ale and it richly deserves a place on my list of favourite pubs in the town centre.

20 Dec 2009 12:51

The Town Crier, Chester

This has been one my favourite pubs in Chester since I started coming here for day trips from Shrewsbury. A very big building directly opposite the railway station with lounge and bar areas, and in the lounge area there's a big screen and a raised family area. I had 2 pints of Thwaites Bitter on this occasion and a lovely steak dinner before catching my train back home. An excellent pub to either start or finish a day out here, I recommend this place to any BITE member.

11 Dec 2009 11:01

The Marlborough Arms, Chester

Another pub I came across whilst out and about in Chester yesterday. As mentioned in previous comments, it's just one narrow room with two huge display barrels on either side as you walk in and the bar is on the right. It served one of my all time faves - Stonehouse Station Bitter - so I had 2 pints of that which were excellent. Pub was quiet when i visited and music by Frank Sinatra and Dusty Spribngfield was on the sound system. Perhaps not the best pub in Chester but it's not the worst either. I may call again.

11 Dec 2009 10:51

The Boot Inn, Chester

Came across this place whilst on a day out in Chester yesterday. As some other comments say, it's an old-fashioned pub on the Chester rows with historic pictures and timber frame s all around. I had 2 pints of Samuel Smith's Old Special which were very good indeed. Only downsides were very limited seating and a gentleman who obviously had too much to drink shouting about his colourful life (this was around 2pm, by the way). Despite this, it's a very nice pub with well-priced drinks, and I will call in again.

11 Dec 2009 10:37

Salopian Bar, Shrewsbury

Visited the Salopian Bar again yesterday afternoon and enjoyed 4 pints of Stonehouse Station Bitter whilst watching the football results on Sky Sports News. Absolute heaven! My rating for this place goes up to a perfect 10.

6 Dec 2009 12:14

Morgans, Shrewsbury

Called into Morgan's again last night and ejoyed another 2 pints of Shropshire Gold. Staff busy but friendly. I will call here again.

29 Nov 2009 11:54

The Three Fishes, Shrewsbury

Called in to this wonderful pub again yesterday afternoon and more guest ales were on show. I first had a pint of Doom Bar, then a pint of Gem Ale and finally a pint of Brewer's Gold. All were very good indeed. Why this pub is not in the BITE Top 20 I don't know. I will keep on coming here whenever I'm in the town centre.

29 Nov 2009 11:44

Montgomery's Tower, Shrewsbury

This place now seems to have taken over from Shrewsbury Hotel as the main JDW pub in this neck of the woods. Visited here yesterday afternoon and found it quite pleasant (though what it's like after 8pm I don't know). thre were 7 handpumps on the bar I went to (two bars in here) with 5 guest ales (permanent ales seem to be Pedigree and Abbot's Ale). Had 1 pint of Exe Valley XXV, then a pint of Tournament Bitter and finally a pint of BOB Bitter. All were very good indeed. Overall a good place to come to if you enjoy sampling various real ales and the food didn't look too bad either. I'll definitely call in again.

22 Nov 2009 11:28

The Hole In The Wall, Shrewsbury

I must leap to the defence of the Hole In The Wall here. I've never had a bad pint whenever I've visited this place. True, food can be a while if it's short-staffed but the folks here are quite friendly. Came here yesterday afternoon and enjoyed 2 pints of Spitfire Bitter which were excellent. (Had to have Spitfire really because 10p of every pint sold goes to the Help For Heroes campaign so I felt I had to do my bit to help these guys). Overall I find this place a good one to come to when out and about and its also an ideal place to start a pub crawl round Shrewsbury.

15 Nov 2009 13:14

Cromwells Bar, Shrewsbury

I've been coming to this wine bar on and off for a good few years and have always enjoyed the place. Sure the wine bar area can get a bit congested when busy but I've never let that become a problem. Visited last Saturday and enjoyed 2 pints of Stonehouse Cambrian Gold Bitter which were very good. An excellent venue especially for couples and small parties to be wined and dined.

13 Nov 2009 16:59

The Shrewsbury Hotel, Shrewsbury

Decent Wetherspoons pub but now generally playing second fiddle to Montgomery's Tower. Came here yesterday afternoon and enjoyed 3 pints of Jenning's Cocker Hoop Ale which were very good. Staff were quite friendly and the atmosphere OK (no music in JDW pubs obviously). Food also looked pretty appetizing too. A good place to be wined and dined, but it seems not as good as the new kid on the block, Montgomery's Tower.

1 Nov 2009 11:41

The Bull Inn, Shrewsbury

Here is my afternoon report on Bull Inn! Staff very friendly and atmosphere very good. Enjoyed 4 pints of Marston's Ploughman's which were highly satisfying. I'll definitely be back.

24 Oct 2009 22:40

Salopian Bar, Shrewsbury

Called into Salopian Bar again Friday afternoon and enjoyed 2 pints of Stonehouse Station Bitter, before switching to Titanic First Class and enjoyed 2 pints of that. An excellent experience - I'll keep coming back!

24 Oct 2009 10:53

Ye Olde Custom House Inn, Chester

This is a pub I frequently visit when on a day out in Chester. Good atmosphere, freindly staff and an excellent menu as well. Beers on offer when i visited on Thursady included Jenning's Cocker Hoop & Cumberland Ale, and Marston's Ploughman's Ale. and Pedigree. I enjoyed 2 pints of Cocker Hoop and hoped to have a third but it ran out, so I had a pint of Pedigree instead. Overall, an excellent pub to visit when out and about in Chester city centre.

24 Oct 2009 10:47

The Wheatsheaf, Shrewsbury

This is yet another good pub I regularly visit when I'm in the town centre. Though quite small, it frequently offers up to 6 real ales alongside Banks's Bitter. Good atmosphere with comfy seats too. I enjoyed 2 pints of Rocketeer Ale here last night which were excellent. To anyone wandering around Shrewsbury, this is one pub worth checking out. I'll definitely be back.

17 Oct 2009 10:54

The Old Post Office, Shrewsbury

Dropped into the Old Post Office again last again last night and enjoyed 3 pints of Marston's Ploughman's Ale which were very good. Still recommend this place for starting or finishing a pub crawl round Shrewsbury.

17 Oct 2009 10:43

Morgans, Shrewsbury

Yes it may be a trendy wine bar & restaurant now but don't let that put you off because it does still serve real ale. Comfy sofas near the bar and dining area & kitchen round the corner, this place may have a posh wine bar atmosphere but the staff are always very friendly and try to make you feel welcome. Called in yesterday afternoon and there were 3 handpumps serving Shropshire Gold, Shropshiire Lad and Three Furnaces Bitter. Had 2 pints of Shropshire Gold which were excellent. A trendy wine bar that also serves good reasl ale. I'll definitely call again.

29 Sep 2009 10:21

The Kings Head, Shrewsbury

I disagree with some of the comments about this pub. Yes it does get a bit quiet in the afternoons after 4pm whern the kitchen closes but until then its a very good food-oriented pub that serves grub ranging from bacon sarnies to rump steak dinners. Only beers available are Worthington's & John Smith's but I 've never had a bad pint here. The local radio station, The Severn, is played here and very good it is too. Probably not the best pub in Shrewsbury then, but there are a lot worse than this.

29 Sep 2009 10:06

The Armoury, Shrewsbury

A huge pub next to the River Severn with lots of bookcases filled with hundreds of books all around the place. Very friendly staff and pleasant music-free atmosphere. Enjoyed 3 fine pints of Shropshire Gold here yesterday afternoon. Several other real ales on offer too. A wonderful pub for those who enjoy their cask ale and a good chin-wag. I'll definitely call again.

27 Sep 2009 11:43

The Old Post Office, Shrewsbury

This Is another good pub in Shrewsbury town centre that I frequently visit. I did so last night and there was a band playing 50's rock n' roll inside. Quite good they werere too. I had 1 pint of Jenning's Cocker Hoop and hoped to have another but unfortunately they ran out so had a pint of Banks's instead (this and Mansfield Ale are only permanent ales). A nice place with dining area, beer garden and comfy sofas that offers food and a nice experience. Good pub to either start or end a pub crawl round Shrewsbury.

26 Sep 2009 10:22

Salopian Bar, Shrewsbury

This is another pub I regularly visit when in town centre. Fabulous range of real ales to choose from, very friendly staff and filled rolls such as beef ,ham and cheese too. Went in yesterday and had 4 excellent pints of Stonehouse Station and a beef roll. Will definitely call again. Well recommended to any BITE member.

13 Sep 2009 12:48

The Three Fishes, Shrewsbury

I said I'd call again in my previous blog and sure enough did so last night. Among ales on offer were Ludlow Best & Bishop's Farewell. Had 2 pints of Ludlow Best which were superb. As Arnie said in the Terminator films: I'll be back!

12 Sep 2009 10:47

The Bull Inn, Shrewsbury

I have always enjoyed coming here either in the afternoons or evenings. Called in last night and had 2 Pints of Banks's which were very good. Staff were rearranging tables and chairs so perhaps the live music booked for last night never showed up. Music from CD player was on instead & was today's chart hits. I'll give an afternoon report on this pub soon.

12 Sep 2009 10:41

The Red Lion, Shrewsbury

I always come to this pub every Monday night for the quiz. Fantasttic ambience, friendly staff, good range of drinks and top-class food. John Smith's and Theakston's Mild are two permanent beers but guest ales also appear occasionally - Greene King IPA and Tetley's were on last night. Had 3 pints of IPA and 1 John Smith's after IPA ran out. Overall, an excellent pub for family gatherings, birthday parties and also for couples who just fancy an evening out.

8 Sep 2009 18:38

The Bull and Stirrup, Chester

Called in here on Thursady straight after Pied Bull. Very imposing both outside and inside and staff were friendly too - only trouble was I was only customer in there for a quite a while! Had 2 pints of John Smith's which were good but not special. Hope to call again when it's busier.

6 Sep 2009 13:42

The Pied Bull, Chester

I agree with realalechav - an excellent pub to visit if you're out and about in Chester. Popped in on Thursday and had 2 pints of Everard's Tiger plus a rump steak and chips. Very nice atmosphere but my only gripe is that one bloke seemed to be doing everything - dashing back and forth from the bar to the food counter and taking phone calls in the reception area. Really could do with more staff on in the afternoons. Other than that, a brilliant place.

6 Sep 2009 13:26

The Three Fishes, Shrewsbury

I'm another member of the Three Fishes Fan Club! Excellent choice of real ales on offer, great food, lovely atmosphere and superb landlord - what more could you ask for? Had 3 pints of Stonehouse Station Bitter in here yesterday and each one went down velvety smooth. I must call in again very soon. 10/10

6 Sep 2009 13:13

The Coracle Inn, Shrewsbury

I disagree with some comments here - this happens to be my local & i've always got on well with the landlord. Bank's Bitter andd Marston's Pedigree are permanent beers and you do occasionally get guest ales too - most recent being Jenning's Tom Fool. Good mix of characters & Barry the manager is brill. Always worth a visit if you're around this area of Shrewsbury
