The Unicorn, Ambleside

Sadly for me the introduction of Robinsons Ales into the area has led to a lowering of quality. I now tend to give these old Hartleys pubs a miss and look down the road for some Hawkshead brews. It was and could still be a nice pub, if it has some other Ales.

The Queens Arms, Birmingham

Its an interesting refurbishment, seeking to blend new and old. Nice pint of Directors. Music can be loud at times. A rare pub in the area, with choice of real ales.

The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham

An old favourite and my regular. Its a shame that they seem to find it so difficult to keep staff. Its too common to see different staff every month. But go here for the excellent beer and lovely building. They have theatre now as well.

The Hole int' Wall, Bowness on Windermere

This is a fine historic and local pub, often frequented by many holidaymakers. The Ale is according to taste, virtually always monopolised by Robinsons, which is not at all to my taste. A regular guest ale would be welcome.

The Church Inn, Hockley

Very recently under new management,Nov.07. Better since the smoking ban. Bathams + another real ale. Food is now changed, as yet untried. The new regime has begun to strip the pub of all the old and dusty decor, and new decor appearing seems fine. A welcome sign of good times ahead is the addition of a real fire. This is a pub to watch as it changes after many years of neglect.

The Queens Head Hotel, Troutbeck

One of the best lakeland pubs with excellent food and beer. Sunny garden and log fires inside.

The New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Langdale

This is THE walkers pub, where all meet up in late afternoon and sit out and take in some more of this glorius countryside. The ODG is the essence of England, its just Itself! Its also the bus terminus if your too 'relaxed' to walk back down Great Langdale!

The Watermill Inn, Ings

We stayed overnight as it was not far off the M6 and a break in the journey. And an excellent stop too, and luckily my wife drove the next morning!

The Manor Arms, Broughton in Furness

There are some nice pubs in Broughton, but this is the favourite. Late in the summer afternoons the sun shines directly onto the front, which faces onto the Square. You will have to queue for the outside seats.
Always seems to have the tastiest real ales.Visit after a days walking and enjoy.
