The Wheatsheaf, Biggleswade

Functional, a bit pokey. Admittedly, I didn't try the beer, but the Greene King IPA/Abbot will either be alright or not alright, which isn't saying much. I'm sure it's a fabulous pub and the craic is good, but I'm not really a craic addict.

Engineers Arms, Henlow

The best pub in the world. A shrine to the hop, with every drinker's need catered for. From the food to the plentiful supply of quiz books, the quirky interiors, free aftershave in the gents and, naturally, a seriously fine selection of ales - this is the zenith of licensed premises. It gets a 9 because 10 seems like closure.

The White Hart, Biggleswade

This is Alpha Male/Alpha Female territory. Alcohol is a means to an end here. Dark and threatening, like a clenched fist. One Greene King IPA handpump is bad enough, but three? In a row?! Someone here either has OCD or no imagination. Not for the faint-hearted.

The Brown Bear, Biggleswade

Quirky pub close to town centre but you'd miss it if you weren't looking for it. The beer's in good nick, there's a friendly welcome. Add this to The Rose if you want a real ale crawl in Biggleswade without having to drink Greene King IPA (and who wouldn't?!).

The Rose, Biggleswade

The real ale's in good nick. Great interior, lots of leather sofas and a marvellous glass-rose-bordered window. Tasteful jukebox (despite the James Blunt). Best pub I've visited in Biggleswade (though I haven't been to all of them).

The Malt Shovel Inn, Ruardean

A great pub, warm and friendly, with bags of quirky charm. The pub is full, inside and out, of Tube memorabilia, stuffed animals (watch out for the gigantic spider) and comfortable furniture. The beer is well-looked after and there's rooms and a skittle alley upstairs, too. The food is great and it's ideal for putting yourself near all the main attractions in the Forest of Dean. All in all, a proper pub.

Millstream, Hitchin

A bit like Butlins, but without the Redcoats.

The Red Lion, Preston

It's 1940 and the Battle of Britain is being fought in the skies above the South East. Rationing is beginning to bite and that damson wine has obviously been ruined by a rogue batch of yeast. Thanks heavens for the Red Lion ! A pint, a friendly face and a warm welcome awaits you! And you can bet that Mr Hitler wishes he had a Red Lion down the end of his village green!

Corn Exchange, Hitchin

Like "Heat" magazine came to life and opened its own pub. Bling as far as the eye can see...

The Globe, Luton

A warm welcome all the time. Wonderful Deuchars IPA and it has its own festival twice a year. Good for watching the football scores come in on a Saturday afternoon.

The Sunrunner, Hitchin

A real ale festival every day of the week. Constantly changing and updated often within the space of an evening. Has gone upmarket in last few years, and now the clientele appear to resemble a VW Golf owner's club, If you can laugh and shout at the same time, this is a paradise. For the discerning real ale drinker - get some ear plugs, cower in the corner and enjoy some fabulous beer in very good nick.
