The Walton Tavern, Walton on the Naze

The comment posted in September 2009, bears no relevance now, as the pub closed shortly after, and remained closed for several months.

However, it has now re-opened, (under new management), and is quickly returning to the pleasant pub it used to be.

The new owners, (Derek & Carol), are the nicest people anyone could wish to meet, and their staff are all just the same. There are some slight changes, (satellite tv now gone, along with the pool table). However, this seems to make for a better atmosphere. They are steadily returning to a full eating programme. (At the moment, mainly lunch time but have just started evening menu), prepared by Steve, (their son).

Just last night, (Friday 6th August 2010), I spent great night in there, listening to the live music, (long time since I last saw customers openly dancing along with the music).

Derek admits that there is still a way to go, but I urge anyone within the vacinity to give the newbies a chance. You won't regret it.

The Nags Head, Moreton

Glad I didn't read the previous reviews (admitedly they are older ones), before we visited. This place is a gem. We visited on Bank Holiday Sunday afternoon. and were received with a VERY friendly welcome, (very rare these days, as a stranger). Seems like a family run establishment. I know it was fairly quiet, and I wouldn't be able to comment upon the atmosphere when busy, as it probably was later that evening when they had live music. However, I can only speak as we found it. If that was typical of the place, then I would highly recommend this pub to anyone.

The Walton Tavern, Walton on the Naze

Pub now owned by Scottish & Newcastle brewery. Not much change in range of beers, but they do now serve San Miguel and McEwans lager. Unfortunately, the quiz nights have stopped. "Tinnie" the Kiwi is a real laugh.

Sorry Jez had a bad experience with the food, but as a fairly regular customer here, I can assure him that what he experienced must have been a one off bad day, as generally the food is excellent and good value.

The Bull, Blackmore

My first ever visit to this place and I was quite impressed. Myself and three relatives decided this was the place to eat. Despite the bar being pretty full (it was Bank Holiday Sunday afternoon), we were advised that maximum waiting time for food was thirty minutes. We dined in the "Bike Shed". Food was slightly pricey, but was served very quickly once ordered, and was totally enjoyable, served by pleasant staff. On the whole, a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

The Railway Tavern, Woodford Green

Have been drinking in here on an on/off basis for the last three years, as it's my "very" local. It has improved 100% since the refurbishment and is now one of the better pubs in the area.

My friend, who spends much of his time living in Malaysia, always likes to meet at The Railway, whenver he is back home, despite having five other pubs in a nearer walking area to his flat.

The Walton Tavern, Walton on the Naze

Now under new management, but still retains the old ambience. There have been a few changes in the range of beers on offer, with a slightly larger choice. They have also just started doing B&B again after a gap of a couple of years.

The Ship Inn, Grays

If you want to visit a pub where you'll be welcomed, don't go here.

I ventured in with a black friend, and was nearly lynched by the mob of local drinkers, who made it abundantly clear that he (and I) were not welcome. I have since had a conversation with a work colleague, and he related an incident where he and a relation dropped in for a quick half. A scruffy bloke sitting by the bar, got up and blocked their path. "You can stay", he said to my friend, "but we don't want you" he said, pointing to my friend's relation.

How this place remains open for business, remains a mystery to me.

The United Brethren, Chelmsford

Friendly, backstreet pub. Parking may be a problem at busy times, but well worth taking the trouble.

We enjoyed a good half-hour drink today, amidst the few locals, and a couple of teams of drinkers on a treasure hunt. I would recommend this bar to anyone who enjoys a quiet pint, although I can't comment on what it's like at peak time.

A Gray & Sons establishment, close to football ground and Essex County Cricket grounds.

The Moletrap, Tawney Common

Small, friendly old-fashioned pub in farming location.

Local CAMRA pub of the year in 1997. Difficult to find, but well worth the effort.

The Hung, Drawn and Quartered, Tower Hill

Have now visited on three occassions and each time I didn't stay long.

Probably not a bad pub, but it gets too crowded for my liking.

The Flying Horse, Broadgate

Visited last Friday (30th Dec). Was served very quickly (not many customers), by friendly bar-staff.

Surprised and delighted to be offered free mince pies, even before getting our drinks.

Very impressive.

The Duke Of Wellington, Portobello Road

Very nice pub. Spent a pleasant half-hour there on the 30th December, with three relations.

Stuart and Gemma took time out to chat with us, despite being busy.

Best pub in the area. Will defineately go again.

The Grave Maurice, Whitechapel

I hated this place. I prefered it when it was a traditional pub, even if the decor left a lot to be desired. Unfortunately, this has now been upraded to a trendy wine bar type establishment, much in keeping with today's fashion.

I like true pubs, and this is definately not one of them.

The Blind Beggar, Whitechapel

I visited this pub in late November, (after a gap of five years), with a friend who was visiting from overseas, and was excited about seeing a pub with so much history.

What a disappointment. They've ruined the place. Now it's just like any other chain pub, with no character. I won't be returning there in a hurry.

The Walton Tavern, Walton on the Naze

Family friendly, seafront pub overlooking the North Sea on the Essex coast.

Owners, Royston & Kaz and the staff always have a warm welcome for regulars and strangers alike.
Large restaurant, open every weekend and most weekdays (during the summer).

Large televisions showing most sport. No music.

Fun quiz most Sunday evenings.

Highly recommended.
