The Kings Arms, Bradford on Avon

...and for good this time...or so it would seem.

The Swan, Bradford on Avon

Speckled Hen still as well kept as it was in August 2011. Unfortunately the Folk Club is now in the main bar....warmer but noisier.

The Boathouse, Widbrook

There's a Freudian slip....it is of course THE BOATHOUSE !

15 Jan 2015 16:36

The Boathouse, Widbrook

Now renamed THE BOASTHOUSE. New management etc. Refurbished interior...pity they don't look after the beer as well as they look after the 'fabric'. Doombar was definitely 'sour'.

The George, Bradford on Avon

CLOSED

15 Jan 2015 16:31

The Bunch of Grapes, Bradford on Avon

Sadly closed and currently up for sale

The Rose and Crown, Limpley Stoke

A brief comment to endorse those praising the food. Excellent value for money with prompt and courteous attention.....who could ask for more ?

The Swan, Bradford on Avon

The Speckled Hen is always kept OK, but despite the frequent large turn out in the cellar for the Folk Club on a Tuesday, the cellar bar is never manned.

The Lamb, Trowbridge

Things have not improved, or have slipped back again since 'Spooley's' comment of August 2008. On friday 15th April the 6X was like vinegar !

The Bear, Bradford on Avon

The pub has reopened, albeit a bit later than SotonAleDrinker anticipated. Now looks more like a restaurant than a pub. Prices are par for pub grub. Will report further once I have sampled it (and their ale)

The Dog and Fox, Bradford on Avon

No.... it was wind ! His last smile was on VE Night.

The Bunch of Grapes, Bradford on Avon

Whilst the 'clutter' mentioned in the last review does little to enhance the decor, the draught beer is well kept and the food is excellent. The pies, of which they are justly proud, are worth walking across Wiltshire for and the 'large' Sunday roast would feed a family of four for a week. I just wish the staff were a bit more cheerful.

The Boathouse, Widbrook

Forgot to mention (see previous comment) that I had to take my pint back and get it replaced; it looked and tasted as though it had been laced with milk.

The Boathouse, Widbrook

April 2010 and the previous reviewers have been too generous. Unfortunately the Beehive is closed.... but it would be worth swimming down the canal to get to the Canal Tavern..... or anywhere else !!

18 May 2010 14:53

The New Inn, Buckby Wharf

No kids, TV or canned music to be seen on two recent consecutive lunchtime visits. Friendly staff, excellent beer and acceptable food mean this is a place I shall return to. A comment on a weekend evening will follow in due course.

The Hawkley Inn, Hawkley

I have now made a return visit, following my 8th August entry below, and can report that the B&B has enhanced this pubs many attractive features. The rooms (at least the one we used) were excellent, as was the breakfast. There is now more room for bar patrons and the food and beer are as good as before. With superb walking all round (to walk off the highly recommended Sussex Beef Stew), who could ask for more ?

Lord Hood, Greenwich

Nice pub, pleasant atmosphere, good music on a Tuesday night, shame about the beer. Why don't the traditional musicians insist on some traditional ale ?

8 Nov 2006 14:25

The Blackfriar, Blackfriars

Whilst it is hard to believe that some people want to stand outside and drink on a traffic island, inside (if you ignore the Wetherspoon's-style sticky tables) the food is a cut above standard pub-grub and the real ales (I tried 'em all) were quite adequately kept. Cocktail bar at the Savoy it aint.... but it is an interesting, real ale, railway station boozer.

18 Sep 2006 12:38

The Hawkley Inn, Hawkley

A little gem. Excellent beer(s) and food. I hope their move upmarket and into B&B doesnt spoil the ambience.

23 Aug 2006 14:33

The Prospect of Whitby, Wapping

My first visit since the refurbishment was a bit like the curate's egg. Nice that the tables no longer wobble sufficiently to spill your pint, but why on earth have they retained the hideous flashing fruit machine that no one seems to play and which takes up valuable space. Not sure about the waitress service either, especially as they don't seem to know what beers are available on the bar.

24 Jul 2006 13:33

The Ship of Fools, Croydon

This place is very aptly named. Not only does it suffer from the usual Wetherspoons' "sticky table syndrome" (I am sure the staff are issued with sprays of dilute PVA glue to spray on all horizontal surfaces), but the toilets smelled like a medieval tannery.
Last night not only was the bar understaffed, but the bitter included in the food offer was "off".

One to avoid like the plague.

26 Apr 2006 09:25

The Tollgate Tavern, Beckton

Were you able to see across this bar, through the cigarette smoke, it might be possible to comment favourably on the plethora of TV screens of various sizes that hang at every angle. Whilst there is, within vision, a sea of dirty glasses and overflowing ashtrays, it at least hides the dirty table tops.
Frankly, next time I miss the DLR I will walk rather than spend time here.

The Crown and Sceptre, Kensington

Difficult to do more than endorse all the previous comments. However the pub does have a genuinely warm and relaxed atmosphere, making it well worth a trek to get there.

The Tunnel House Inn and Barn, Coates

One has to ask whether or not the previous commentator had difficulty reading the Specials board before or after he had sampled the real ales (well kept as they are). I am sure that my heartfelt endorsement of the establishment will not do as much for it as the recent description of it in Private Eye as a haunt of drug-dealers and royalty; I can only say that I saw neither when I enjoyed excellent food, beer and company there on Valentines Day.

17 Feb 2006 14:02

The Change of Horses, Farnborough

Yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice. I don't know where some of the previous reviewers have been eating, but it would not appear to be in S.E. UK. I found the prices reasonable, the quality acceptable and the surroundings understated and pleasant. There was no sign of the local thugs, although my visit was on Sunday lunchtime, perhaps before they got up.
All in all an unpretentious pub, with well kept beer and with staff as friendly as a large and demanding clientele would allow.

31 Jan 2006 14:25

The Chaser, Shipbourne

Excellent food, well kept real ale. Only problem (last Sunday lunchtime) was the plethora of small children running in and out of the building allowing the ingress of arctic blasts of freezing air. Could I suggest either a porch or - for the festive season - a Herod-like cull of local small children.

19 Dec 2005 12:00

The St Crispin Inn, Worth

Just returned from a weekend stay at this Pub. Notwithstanding the Christmas rush, which was not at all surprising given the excellent food, we were well looked after, had comfortable accommodation and a wide and well-kept variety of real ales. It was a bit windy out on the coast however, but I suppose that can't be blamed on the Landlord.

19 Dec 2005 11:55

The Queens Head, Downe

A very friendly pub on the very edge of Greater London. Good country walking 100 yards from the door and a bus service to Bromley South BR. Food is excellent and the real ale is well kept. The several small drinking/eating rooms give the place considerable character.

6 Dec 2005 13:28

The Queens Head, Downe

Friendly staff - good food - excellent real ale !
Need one say more ?

24 Nov 2005 13:55

The Doric Arch, Euston

No less than 10 real ales available here and those that I managed to sample were all well kept. The place has a pleasant atmosphere, but you have to compete with football on the TV and memorise the access code for the loos.... which latter task becomes perversely increasingly difficult to achieve, as you work your way through the real ales and the the need to bring it to mind becomes more and more frequent.

14 Nov 2005 10:24

The Exmouth Arms, Euston

Not a bad Pub, with reasonable beer but remarkably quiet on a Saturday night. One reason for the paucity of patrons may have been the Folk club that meet upstairs. Unless you are both tone deaf and enjoy beating yourself with nettles, avoid the club like the plague.

14 Nov 2005 10:13

The Rising Sun, Moseley Green

An excellent pub in the very heart of the Forest of Dean. Real Ale (including the local 'Freeminer' and 'Speculation' and good food all served. Much favoured by the locals generally and the local caving club in particular.

3 Nov 2005 14:27

The Fox @ Excel, ExCeL London

This public house is to be avoided like the plague by anyone who appreciates a decent pint. Not only is John Smiths the only bitter available, but on two of the three occasions when I have been foolish enough to go in, it has either not been available or, as was the case last night, it ran out. One to avoid.

3 Nov 2005 09:24

Ye Olde Red Lion Hotel, Market Bosworth

Good beer, well kept. Nice atmosphere... well worth a visit.

2 Nov 2005 12:46

The Narrow Boat Inn, Weedon

I agree with Warren; although I didn't eat, I did try both the real ales, which were well kept. The service was friendly as well, which more than compensates for the A5 traffic thundering past the front door

2 Nov 2005 12:37

The Tigers Head, Chislehurst

Chef and Brewer pub. Very popular on Sunday afternoons, when food is served all day. Beer and food quite good, although admin of the latter is a bit ropey.

17 Oct 2005 08:40

The Rutland Arms, Catford

Nothing much has changed since Tim's 13/1/2004 comments.... which in itself is a good thing. I however would describe the clientele as "mature and discerning", which probably says all you need to know about Tim and I. The pub has a pleasant atmosphere, which in itself sets it apart from most Catford pubs.

17 Oct 2005 08:34

The Fountain, Parkend

An excellent pub with well kept real ale, including the local 'Freeminer'. Excellent food as well.

12 Oct 2005 12:49

The Jolly Farmers (ex jordan), Lewisham

I agree with 'Big Pete'. This is a nice pub with a bit of character (albeit 'manufactured'). The real ale is excellent and well kept. I gather a kitchen is opening shortly, which will give it another string to its bow. In short, its much too good for Lewisham.
