The Lion Inn, Trellech

saw the awards but didn't do it for me

The Boat Inn, Penallt

The pub to visit south of Monmouth. It has had a bumpy few years but recently has gone back to its best. Simple riverside stone-flagged floor, friendly welcome, delicious Butty Bach and even packets of Bombay Mix! There is a car park in Redbrook on the English bank so you can park and walk across the old railway bridge. About 8 years ago the pub was famed for its tasty and good value curries. I see they're back on the menu but haven't tried them. Live music on Tues & Thurs.
But there is one major drawback - you have to go home sometime.

The Crown, Pantygelli

Lovely pub in quiet rural location not far out of Abergavenny. Delicious Wye valley beer, friendly welcome. Only tried the twiglets but clear pub has a v good reputation for food. Terrace to the front with beautiful evening views. Pilkington

Cornewall Arms, Clodock

One room traditional local with lovely garden at the back. No draught ( too small a hamlet) but v.good bottled Butty Bach, Gorgeous church and River Monnow river bank with mill. Locals v friendly. Longtown Castle ( motte & bailey) 2 mls up the road. Perfect, 'more lovely and more fair' on a summer's day but sadly rarely open at lunchtimes- except Sat/Sun outside term time. And it's near the Carpenters Arms...

The Carpenters Arms, Walterstone

Just such a lovely place to stop. Good beer and a friendly welcome. Well worth the effort to find but, be warned, if you visit once you'll go back again,,,

The Halfway House, Pitney

Dropped by on a summer's evening after a bike ride and didn't want to leave. A old pub with a modern take that combines the best of both. Friendly, lovely beer, attractive building.

The Old Barn, Wraxall

Great pub. Good range of well-kept beers. Next to impossible to find - which makes the journey that bit more worthwhile. Purrfect pub crawl = Here, the Miners Rest, the Black Horse & the Blue Flame. Days wouldn't get much better than this. Free scout 'navigation' badge to all new customers.

The Blue Flame Inn, Nailsea

idiosyncratic,age-yellowed glasses, a structure looking like it's in danger of imminent collapse, good beer, unmissable

The George Inn, Abbots Leigh

good guest beer but dispiriting experience.

The Priory Hotel, Portbury

rather fake pub that's more a restaurant. Sadly, not much of food seems home cooked.
