The Rochester Castle, Stoke Newington

Remember that day in February 2009 when it snowed so much that nobody went to work? I'd just moved to Stoke Newington and went on a bit of a pub crawl to get to know the area.

Popped in here. I have to say that the 99p IPA was ample compensation for witnessing a bloke punching a lady's face in in the corner. And the 2.99 ham, egg n chips rounded off the experience...nicely.

Good chance of scoring some puff outside if you've go the bollocks to ask the rudeboy geriatric potheads too, I reckon!

The Prince, Stoke Newington

Just another (middle) class concious 'yummy mummy' pub/creche.

Three Crowns, Stoke Newington

Best avoided. Why?

1). It is pretty expensive.

2). 'Orrible gastropub stylings.

But it's fair to say, friendly staff.

The Rose and Crown, Stoke Newington

Brilliant pub. Why?

1). Weekends are packed out come night-time, great atmosphere. Weekdays the pub is quiant - yes quaint - and a great environment to sup a pint in.

2). Good solid resident ales such as Pedigree and Deuchars. Now for the best bit - the guest ales. The guy behind the bar (Tom I think his name is) seems to be a real ale connoisseur. This means you are bound for a guest ale treat and its the type of place to offer you a taste first.

3). Its winter now so good to see a fire on the burn.

4). Yes they serve food in a little section of the pub, and its all good. They haven't turned the place into a soulless gastro pub.

This pub is a 15 minute walk (past a load of pubs) from my place and it's my adopted local.

The Lion, Stoke Newington

Flat out average. Why?

1). Great location , friendly staff, shows the footie and you gotta love the secret pool table upstairs. And you can bring in food. But...

2). The actual drinking experience ain't all that. I can't stand being served ale in a branded Strongbow glass with its ridiculous veluptuous shape and fizzy bottom. Attention to detail! Just get some unbranded straight beer glasses, or handled glasses for the ales. Oh, and the ale is not that well kept in my experience.

Defoe, Stoke Newington

Above average I suppose. Why?

1). Its on Church Street.

2). Decent decour.

3). Good range of ales.

Nothing special though, not much atmosphere no live music, no pool table. Best for a quiet pint on a Sunday.

The Coach and Horses, Stoke Newington

Not bad. Why?

1). Great Thai food with quality service (in-house restaurant team...)

2). Shows the footie on Sky.

3). Well kept ales and a decent pint of Guinness.

4). Decent decour, and its tichy size creates a decent atmosphere.

5). Quite dimly lit which I tend to like!

The Birdcage, Stoke Newington

Best avoided. Why?

1). The place could do with a wipe down. A bit worrying when your pint sticks to the table.

2). Not much of an atmosphere, not much of a range of ales.

Not the worst place in Stoke Newington, and this place is technically my local but with so many better options in and around the area I just walk past these days.

Auld Shillelagh, Stoke Newington

Great pub. Why?

1). I never really believed that stuff about Guinness tasting better from one place to the other. Well, this pub proved me wrong. Great Guinness.

2). You order your drink and bar staff ask you to take a seat and bring it over!

3). Totally unique pub.

4). Live Irish music is a hit.
