The Dog and Bone, Lincoln

The Dog and Bone in Lincoln is with out a doubt one of the best pubs that I have ever been to. We were enjoying a day out in Lincoln on Saturday and, being conscientious and clever types we did a bit of research and decided upon the Dog and Bone as our lunch time watering hole.

The pub was not, as the guide stated, at the north west corner of the cathedral complex, but some 10 minutes walk (I know, it could have been worse), far from the main drag in a neighbourhood reminiscent of Coronation Street. Tucked away down a small, residential road it would be easy to miss. Having found it though, more fool you should you chose to walk on by!

The front door leads you in a very comfortable lounge bar. Book shelves dominate this space crammed with everything from Mills and Boon to the OED. Round the other side of the bar one finds four excellent beers, and a quality pint of Bateman's.

Definitely one for the todo list.

Strugglers Inn, Lincoln

Great real ale pub near the Cathedral. Small snug and main bar, real fires, great beers well kept and a very good choice. Counted 9 handpumps. Timothy Taylor was excellent. Freindly locals and staff, a real traditional local with plenty of interesting nik naks and loads of beer mats hanging from the ceilings and around the walls.

Will definitely be back when we come to Lincoln again.

The Mug House Inn, Bewdley

The pub itself is a proper pub with a log fire and a nice area out the back with patio heaters in the winter. It is also dog friendly. Found a great selection of beautifully kept real ales.

Being a Tuesday night it wasn't too busy, so we were able to settle into an area with all to comfy sofas to catch up on gossip, relax and put the world to rights!

Timothy Taylor and Butty Bach were the beers tried, very good!

A delight to find a really traditional pub with real ales

Ye Olde Dolphin Inn, Derby

One of oldest pubs in the City. Dates from 1530s, lots of tudor-style.cosy and comfortable. Interesting selection of ale, Draught Bass, Greene King Abbot, Marston's Pedigree, Sharp's Doom Bar, Skinner's Betty Stogs and Timothy Taylor Landlord, plus guests. Kept and served well.

The Brunswick Inn, Derby

This is a proper real ale pub. A huge selection of beers, 16 handpulls in total, including Brunswick ales, Everards Beacon Bitter, Everards Tiger Best Bitter and Timothy Taylor Landlord. A nice pub inside and isn't too far from the train station. The staff seem to be quite knowledgeable about the beers. The prices are quite reasonable too. Great pub.

Canal House, Nottingham

What a great pub! Really welcoming and good beer from Castle Rock Brewery. Unusual building with a canal running through it. Food is excellent and decently priced. Tried the venison burger at just £8.95, really good!

The Feathers Hotel, Ludlow

Now I'd say one of the best places in Ludlow for a pint. Ales from the Ludlow brewery and Hobsons available. Well kept and in very good condition. Lovely pale ale from Hobsons called Old Prickly. Nice relaxing surroundings, good service.

Here and the Ludlow Brewery are becoming the two places in town for real ale.

The Church Inn, Ludlow

What's going on here?

The Church Inn used to be such a pleasant place to visit, with good beer, surroundings and service.

Now you find what's becoming a grotty back street pub, looking very worn and in need of some serious TLC.

I sadly have to agree with others here and locally, the Church is going down the pan. Service is very indifferent, sometimes poor, with little if no management.

Groups of very drunk raucous individuals who appeared incapable of even getting to the bar spoit our last visit, as did the very average pint of Ludlow Boiling Well and Hobsons Town Crier.

Afraid we wouldn't recommend anymore, and will be looking elsewhere in Ludlow.

The Crown, Worcester

Not very good.

Pint of Ruddles was average at best. Despite being relatively quiet service was appalling, gaining the feeling of being invisible to staff!

Won't bother again.

The Sportsman, Newtown

Well worth trying the Sportsman. Montys Brewery pub, with character. Three rooms including the main bar, and lounge area.

Good pint of Montys Mischief. Also guest ale available.
