Royal George Inn, Salisbury

Lovely back street pub, all wood beams & horse brasses. Warm welcome from friendly staff. Had lunch there a couple of times recently. Very good food, reasonably priced. Beers on offer were Ringwood Best, Sharp's Doombar, & Hop Back. Only sampled the Ringwood & Sharp's. Both were excellent.
Definitely worth a visit.

The Avon Brewery Inn, Salisbury

Stopped here for lunch yesterday while looking for somewhere else. Initially we thought it looked a bit unkempt, but quickly realised it was because it hadn’t been ‘tarted up’ or themed. It is a proper pub, and looks like proper pubs should. The staff were bright, chirpy, and very welcoming, and there were a few affable regulars sitting at the bar doing crosswords. We sampled the Ringwood Best and Marstons EPA, both of which were in pristine condition. The bar menu was reasonably priced with a good range of pub favourites. Our food was served quickly and it was very good indeed, with vegetables (carrots, broccoli & cauliflower) cooked to perfection. So many places overcook anything green.
We will definitely give it another visit next time we are in Salisbury.

Cloisters, Salisbury

Went here for the first time for a lunchtime snack today. The bar is very pleasant & comfortable. The food was very good value for money at 7.00 for a well filled tuna mayo ciabatta with chips & salad. The beers on offer were Timothy Taylors Landlord, Summer Lightning, and Doom Bar. I tried a pint of both the Landlord & the Doom Bar and they were excellent, but at 3.80 a pint I thought they were a bit pricey.

The Plough, Wreay

This is not so much a pub as a restuarant which serves a couple of real ales. I asked for two pints of Lakeland which were served with about 1 inches of head. I asked (politely) for a top-up and was given two pints which were still well below an acceptable level, but they were dumped on the bar in front on me & I was given that look which said don't ask for any more. The beer was very good, but I was not very impressed with the service.

The Royal Oak, North Gorley

I suspect that the previous comment was made regarding Sunday August 1st. If that is the case the kitchen management have accepted total responsibility for the mayhem caused on that date and apologise for any upset caused. In their defence, they had only taken over the kitchen a week before and completely underestimated the demand. They had insufficient staff, and those they did have were relatively untrained. Staff recruitment and training has now become a priority. The menu has changed with many items being reduced in price. As a result of customer requests they are also organising a children's menu.
I feel that I should point out that I have no vested interest in the pub other than the fact that it is my local and I would like to see it survive. Any views posted here are my own personal opinions.
The owners have asked me to add the following statement.
The licensees of the Royal Oak respect and heed all comments made by their customers and will do their utmost to improve in any areas where they are lacking.

The Royal Oak, North Gorley

I am one of the 'not so well heeled' locals who drinks in The Royal Oak and I am pleased to inform that the bar has been cleaned up and painted. A lot of the old clutter has gone, which to my mind has destroyed a bit of it's character. The beers currently on offer are Sharp's Doombar, Adnam's Broadside, Ringwood Best and Ringwood Fortyniner, all of which are usually in very good condition. Not being a Pinot Grigio, cider, or fizzy lager drinker I can't comment on the rest of the offerings. They have new chef, and the Thai food concept has been replaced with a more acceptable pub grub menu. Please don't rate this pub on it's past performance (or lack of), come & check it out for yourself. The pub is dog friendly and is popular with walking & cycling groups. The natives are generally friendly too.
