The Royal Hotel, Ross-on-Wye

Great local bar/hotel, renovated in last 18 months or so - large outside terrace with stunning views overlooking the Wye. Bar menu never disappoints and good wine list.

The Mill Race, Walford

Love this pub - fantastic locally sourced food and superb choice of wines. Have been several times in the last year and never disappointed. Beautiful decor with wooden floors and log fire - staff are great and show real enthusiasm for their food & take pride in their menu. No wonder they've got awards & recommendations as long as your arm..

The Loughpool Inn, Sellack

Amazing pub just outside Ross-on-Wye - the setting is beautiful, the food amazing, great wine list and the staff are so friendly. Old wooden tables, candles and roaring fire make it a real bolt hole in the winter months and the outside setting in the beer garden is stunning. Highly recommended.

The Hope and Anchor, Ross-on-Wye

Used to be a really stylish riverside pub with fantastic menus and really popular with the locals when Ben owned it a couple of years ago - since it was taken over it's gone downhill. Not as friendly, attention to detail is poor, atmosphere not great, food appauling (cash & carry) and not as welcoming as it used to be. Most locals have been alienated and don't drink there anymore. Rating of '5' is because of the location (otherwise it would've been lower) - if you sit outside by the river which is stunning in summer months, you can ignore what's going on inside the pub!

The Cloisters Thai Restaurant and Wine Bar, Ross-on-Wye

One of our favourite restaurants in the heart of Ross-on-Wye - gorgeous traditional cuisine cooked by authentic Thai chefs. The restaurant itself is really cosy with original stained glass front windows and plenty of wooden features. The staff are so friendly and there's a small bar area at the front if you just want a drink or if you're waiting for your table. Fantastic menu which is always freshly prepared - some of the nicest Thai food we've had.

The Westoncross Inn, Weston Under Penyard

My husband and I visited this pub for Sunday lunch a couple of months ago, as we pass it frequently on the way to Ross-on-Wye and it looks so welcoming from the outside. We were really disappointed - it really dingy and could do with a complete overhaul. The tables in the bar area are similar to the ones you find in fish & chip shops (low, wobbly and cheap brown plastic), the food was clearly cash & carry (pre-sliced 'Herefordshire beef', frozen veg and microwaved desserts - boiling hot centre - with accompanying cartons of 'fresh' cream), toilets are shabby and the whole place is in need of a lick of paint and a good clean. Not what you'd expect from a country pub in a pretty country setting. Landlady was also miserable and moaned about 'hating dogs' when someone brought a dog through the pub into the garden..unlikely we'll be visiting again.

The Loughpool Inn, Sellack

Absolutely blown away! We'd been meaning to try it out for ages so the hubby & I walked the 6.5km country walk from Ross-on-Wye for an evening meal in the pub (you can book in the restaurant but we prefer more relaxed surroundings.. and we weren't disappointed). The all wood interior was really cosy, with pillar candles on tables and fairy lights around the fireplaces. Food was unbelievably good - I had the monkfish wrapped in parma ham in a light curry sauce and the hubby had lamb cutlets cooked to perfection. Wine list was excellent - managed to get through two delicious bottles of Rioja.. meaning we were more inclined to get a taxi back but it was worth it!

The Farmers Arms, Wellington Heath

The pub has now recently changed hands and Ben is doing a fantastic job. The food is absolutely amazing - we had the spiced seabass and steak (cooked to perfection) with steamed veg which was really fresh and evidently local produce. Good wine selection (bottle & by the glass) plus a decent range of beers / ales. The bar area is clean, stylish and comfortable to relax in and there are two more areas where you can eat. All in all, had a great experience there - really friendly and good atmosphere. Will be going back.
