The John Harvey Tavern, Lewes

Great pub about 50 metres from the brewery so the beer is exceptional. Good interior, also good to sit outside by the river. Can't wait to return, my visit was way too short.

Ye Grapes, Mayfair

Great for the summer and the beer is good. However, expect to wait about 25 minutes for a drink from pretty useless staff and a landlady who is possibly the rudest on the planet. She's more interested in shouting at punters who escape the roped off area outside and has an air of arrogance that suggests she's doing you a favour letting you buy a pint. It will be a while before I go back. Shame really.

The Lots Road Pub and Dining Room, Chelsea

Dropped by for a swift one on Friday evening... Is certainly very gastro (church pews, rustic tables etc.) but had a cracking pint of Adnams, which in contrast to the previous posting, the barkeep must have raised their game somewhat. Food looked excellent coming out of the kitchen and the bar staff were very friendly. Maybe things have changed since the October postings? Handy for the 606 club next door.

The Harp, Covent Garden

Superb pub, very well kept ales and friendly, attentive bar staff. The best by a long, long way if you are in the area...

The Royal Oak, Borough

Loved it here. Spent a Sunday afternoon reading the papers, drinking the Best and having an excellent roast. Pleasant seating areas, very friendly bar staff. There were a group of people (15 or so) all singing carols too which was great to hear. You can't help but sense a real community spririt in this place and I would recommend it to everyone - except I don't want it to be rammed so I will keep it to myself....

The Red Lion, Mayfair

Still a great pub, but a real shame that the locals have complained about noise in the street and as a result, you can no longer stand outside during the summer.

The Cheshire Cheese Inn, Hope

The King speaks the truth.

Beers - Hartington, Wentworth and Imperial - all very well kept and reasonably priced.

Landlord - a gent. Likes to take the piss out of people but stick up for yourself and you should have no problem.

Food - freshly cooked, decent range of specials. Try the venison, it's rather good.

The Dog and Fox, Wimbledon Village

Incidentally, for all their banging on about their darn linguine it's not even on the menu! Jokers. There was me planning a trip tonight to smell the "almondy" (sic) aroma....

Agree with JohnBonser, there are still some decent pubs left, safe from the hands of these morons.

The Dog and Fox, Wimbledon Village

I quote from their website below and I'm not joking. I thought Young's pubs were all about decent beer and pleasant conversation.... Apparently not. Unforgivable, the D&F was, in its former life, really rather good. This spiel is just pure bollocks quite frankly:

"By now you've hopefully got the picture of what we're all about. If we're going to serve linguine with oven roasted root vegetables you can bet the veggies will be in season. We'll have glugged some quality olive oil over them beforehand and probably scattered some lemon thyme over to infuse the flavour. We'd probably heat the linguine, preserve a tablespoon or so of the liquor and stir in some fresh, homemade pesto. The pinenuts would have been toasted to give off that almondy aroma and the basil would be fragrant and organic. The Parmesan in the pesto would be quality and freshly grated, and as we bring the whole dish together we would serve it with a dish of the same on the side."

The Bavarian Beerhouse, Shoreditch

Went last night and had a very enjoyable time here. The beer quality is good and varied too. Agree about the service - it can be rather slow - although beer usually arrived within 5-10 mins and since you're not standing at the bar waiting you don't seem to notice it so much. I think it is expensive though for what it is given you feel like you're sitting in a youth hostel. Despite this, I will return.

The Nags Head, Belgravia

Excellent pub, good Adnams. Landlord was a gent when I was there. No mobiles rule is strictly enforced to the benefit of everyone in my opinion.

The Dog House, Kennington

Went in on a Sunday evening.... Good pint of Black Sheep beer and a great roast and homemade crumble. Not sure if the chef has changed since previous comments? I agree it does feel a bit like Camden but it's lively and welcoming and a good variation to the other Kennington pubs. Mainly lager (4 types I think) but noticed they also had Bombadier. Well worth a look if you're in the area. Certainly no fleas or scummy people here (see previous comment) - you probably brought them with you from the cat kennels or whereever precious Tiddles resides when you're in rehab.

The Weld Arms, East Lulworth

Stumbled accross this 17th Century pub at the weekend and thought it was fantastic. Excellent Ringwood Best with a very good (organic) ploughmans. Yes I live in London so prices don't really shock me, but this was not expensive and the service and warm welcome from the manager made it a very pleasant find. I heartily recommend it.

The Lavender, Vauxhall

A very pleasant surprise.... Not the most attractive area to be in, but the pub was very good. Well kept Young's Ordinary (Ram Rod also available) and excellent, freshly cooked, reasonably priced main courses. Wide selection of lagers and varied wine list. Plenty of room to sit, attentive staff and a small garden area at the back - all in I'd say 8/10.

The White Hart, Kennington

Excellent pub, well kept TT Landlord and extremely helpful staff. Not sure if there's been a change in chef (ref previous comments) but have eaten here a few times now and never been disappointed - food always cooked to a very high standard. Agree it's quite "gastro" but pulls it off well if that's your bag. Sister pub to the Abbeville in Clapham Common I believe.

The Prince of Wales, Kennington

Moved to the area recently and this is in my view the best in show. Very helpful and polite staff, great well kept Shepherd Neame beers and original features inside. Staff are more than happy for you to drink outside in the Georgian square and the whole ambience makes you feel like Central London is a million miles away.

20 Sep 2006 13:19

The Box Bar, Earlsfield

This place feels like the end of the world is nigh... Truely awful - if you like drinking tasteless flat lager in an environment devoid of civility then come here before you go to the Puzzle and you'll fit right on in. God help you.

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

A fantastic gem of a pub, hidden away from the crowds and a real sense of history in the place. Adnams was on top form, the snacks excellent and the Landord perhaps the most welcoming I have met in a central London boozer. I can't wait to return and think this may have clinched the top spot in the rankings of London pubs. Please don't change a thing.

The Prince of Wales, Wimbledon

If you like having a crap pint after a hard day's shopping in the crap shops of Centre Court, then this God awful smokey pub is the place for you. Full of builders and transients, best avoid it and hop in a cab up to the village.

21 Dec 2004 15:22

The Hand In Hand, Wimbledon Common

A very good pub. Great little beer garden out front which is very pleasant for supper on long summer evenings. Also the lawn by King's which is good for lazing around in the sun. The food is lovely too, and very well priced. The beer is exceptionally well kept, usual Young's fare.... Get yea to the pub!

21 Dec 2004 14:52

The Green Man, Putney Heath

The beer is well kept at the Green Man, although if it came to a push, I think this is probably its only redeeming factor. The management are on another planet; Rude, obnoxious and down right unpleasant. The serving staff on the other hand are extremely courteous. The garden is OK, although fills up with yobbos in the summer - all sweating in their nylon tracksuits. They do have an outdoor bar and barbecue - am yet to try this but I think it could be good.... Seating wise, I'm afraid it's another case of cram as many tables as close to the loos as possible. I would go back, but there are plenty better in SW15.

21 Dec 2004 14:42

The Red Lion, Mayfair

A great place to drink well kept beer in civilised surroundings. The staff can be a bit off sometimes, but overall, far better than anywhere else in the West End. Food OK - sharing platters are good. I would avoid the back bar (often booked for office parties) as it's a bit grubby and has a faint odour of Domestos due to being so close to the loos. Overall, a fantastic place to spend a 'school' night...

21 Dec 2004 14:30

The Crooked Billet, Wimbledon Common

This is a fabulous pub. Excellent beer, great atmosphere and there really is no better place to spend a Sunday afternoon. A change of landlord afoot, I hope it stays as it is....
