The Ball, Sheffield

revolting, filthy place. Called in at 6.30 Saturday and every table was covered in empty glasses with crisp bags and other detritus on the tables and floors. pleaseant enough bar staff, but totally disintersted in the first (and lasting) impression. Sticky tables, sticky bar, dirty and half the beers off. Real shame as Greene King is not a local Sheffield ale and the potential for a good night watching sport on the screens or playing pool is lost by the overall filthy impression. Won't return and would not recommend it

Ye Olde Gate Inne, Brassington

called last night for a pint. good beer and blazing fires, spotlessly clean. moved the van round to the farm nearby (5 a night) then went back for more ales and summat to eat. bit pricey on the food, but good quality. place was full of locals who nearly all cleared off early and went to the other pub's quiz night. it stayed busy tho with some locals and tourists & others who obviously went there for what it is. a top, traditional boozer

The Shepley Spitfire, Sheffield

went in here the other evening. What a shame it's such a hole now, and an insult to the memory of the Shepley family

The Bath Hotel, Sheffield

A gem just off the bustle and neon of West Street. Excellent Moonshine, well worth the walk from Totley

The Nelson Head, Horsey

A real gem. We called after a day's walking, cold & knackered. Roaring fire, fine ales, good food and an eclectic collection of everything. Spotlessly clean and friendly place. The beer must have been good because when we walked back down the beach at dusk we thought the beach was covered in seals ........

The Fishermans Return, Winterton on Sea

we booked this place for a few days B&B at Easter. After booking we found out the present landlord had only just taken the place, they have been here 2 months now (Easter 2009). It's a ~300 year old pub with a few rooms and an outside tin hut which is good for families. They do a few decent beers and top end price pub food.
The rooms are above the pub, real narrow quaint staircase from the pub with a good Fire Escape as well.
The owner is a bloke who is the "Front of House" and his partner who is the chef, we only saw the first in the 3 days we were there.
The owner said they had bought the place and were improving it because the previous owners who had been there over 30 years had let it go downhill - it must have been pretty bad.
Beer is kept well, but at that price it should be. The first meal we had was on a busy Saturday evening, unfortunately we sent both back as the meat & potato pie was lukewarm, the grilled fish raw - not cold - raw. They came back quite soon, good and with apologies. We have no problem with that, it was a Saturday night and they were busy. The second day, both meals were good, the beer was also, and the local cider.
I did ask the owner to wipe a table one evening before we ate at it, he did so with pleasure, but with a beer towel which he then wiped the nearby chair seats, back and arms. I think a basic hygiene course is in order here, arses and tables need separate attention!
Regarding the accommodation:- The tea making facilities were as left by the previous occupants, tea stained and with empty tea and biscuit packets. The bathroom needed a good scrub, it was scruffy and the tv changer didnt work. On our second day, we returned after nine hours cycling to a room exactly as we had left it OK it was Easter Monday, but thats no excuse to not make the bed and push the vac around the place and make it look nice.
Finally, if you stay, you eat in the back room of the pub by the kitchen. Nice enough room and an anything you want good breakfast, but do I want to sit at a table and chair covered in crumbs from last nights cheese & biscuits and chips and turkey nuggets squashed into the floor by my chair? No, the room was mucky, and not just from the previous night.
The owner was pleased he had sold 17 barrels of beer at Easter well done you, but there is more to running a good pub than selling a lot of beer. Sorry guys, we wont be back in a hurry

The Fat Cat, Sheffield

I am astounded! Went in there a few weeks ago after hearing so much about the place, and felt the need to look it up. I have read all the posts on the site and I am obviously missing the point :-(
The beer, without question, is excellent but the woman behind the Bar. What an ignorant, rude woman she is. When she could drag herself away from somewhere not behind the bar, to then answer the phone, she served with a face that would put the sweetest pint of Gold sour!
Goodness knows what's the matter with her, hope it's because Dave Wickett has told her to bugger off.
No food at the moment, cos they are refitting the kitchen it seems.
Will definitely go back, but will ring ahead to makes sure she's not there beforehand ..........
