The Railway Telegraph, Forest Hill

Shepherd Neame have refurbed the place inside and out. Playing jazz/ Frank Sinatra last time I went at lunchtime. Music choice did'nt suit the place at all considering it is facing a warehouse on the South Circular. Cask ales were good not brilliant and bloody pricey at nearly £4.00 a pint. Bar staff were ok. I'll stick to the Capitol for now.

The Opera House, Tunbridge Wells

Impressive are the insides of this pub as it used be a theatre. Trouble is there is very little natural light in the place. Good choice of ales, decent bar staff and most of the punters seem well behaved and friendly enough.

The Slug and Lettuce, Clapham Junction

I have fairly stomach, but this is the one where I got food poisoning eating an undercooked chicken pie. Needless to say I won't be returning.

15 Oct 2014 00:00

The Beehive, Northwich

Shame! My great Grand Farther used to pop in here after work in the 50's and 60's.

14 Oct 2014 22:01

Penny Black, Northwich

I come from South London and always pop in here when visiting relatives in the area. It's an excellent provincial pub, good choice of well kept ales, friendly staff and punters, clean toilets. 9/10.

14 Oct 2014 21:58

Willow Walk, Victoria

Better than your average Spoons. Very pleasant girls behind the bar, cosy without being cramped, civilised clientele, under 5 mins walk from Victoria Station and they have draft Erdinger on, both the dark and light varieties. Will be back soon.

14 Oct 2014 21:25

Drum and Monkey, Croydon

Does Chris Dutch still drink there?

13 Oct 2014 19:58

Broad Green Tavern, Croydon

Another pub that has long gone. Dismal area, nothing English about it.

13 Oct 2014 19:40

The Alma Tavern, Croydon

THIS PLACE HAS SHUT. It is all boarded up, chances are it will be replaced by flats or the like. Was always half empty, poor inattentive service, dodgy area.

13 Oct 2014 19:36

Kentish Drovers, Peckham

About the best pub in Peckham I should think.

12 Oct 2014 22:15

The Assembly Rooms, Epsom

Unusually upmarket for a W'Spoons. Uppity little w***** serving at the bar though. Had an excellent German Weissbier here called Benediktiner, which was expensive but worth it. Probably a place worth a visit if your in the area.

12 Oct 2014 21:17

The Old Bank, Sutton

Another very mundane pub, bog standard service and bog standard beers. Have a pint and move on type of place for me. Right next to Sutton station.

12 Oct 2014 21:03

The Sutton Arms, Sutton

Not much of a pub, Greenking struggle to inspire. Bland, dated interior, average choice of ales and larger. Bar staff friendly enough though.

12 Oct 2014 20:54

O'Neills, Sutton

Drank here many times. Can't fault the place really, except
why don't O'neils serve Cafferys anymore, that was a lovely drink.

12 Oct 2014 20:49

The Railway, Streatham

A quality pub with good all round standards, reasonably genuine and not overly pretentious either. Next time I am passing I will pop in for a noggin.

12 Oct 2014 20:34

The Crown and Sceptre, Streatham

Definitely better than the Holland Tringham, down the London Road. A good place to sit out on a nice day. Not your typical JDW's.

12 Oct 2014 20:19

Churchills, St Johns Hill

A decent little boozer. Good selection of draft reals ales and lagers at sensible prices. Friendly bar staff and a mixture of clientele.

20 Feb 2014 22:01

The Falcon, Clapham Junction

An excellent selection of bitters and European draft lagers including Pilsner Urquel. Also does good pub grub although a bit on the pricey side. A traditional London Boozer, worth a visit if your in the area. The last time I went the music was naff maybe it's better in the evenings.

20 Feb 2014 21:55

Yates's, Croydon

Horrible place, third rate in about every respect. AVOID.

23 Jan 2014 23:51

Yates's, Brighton

Looked in and came out, nasty little hole, like the one in Croydon.

23 Jan 2014 23:46

Molly Malone's, Brighton

An authentic Irish pub now serving Caffery's on tap at £4 a pint, which may be ok if you want to burn a hole in your pocket. I think this place is mainly aimed at the unknowing visitor/tourist, it's just to expensive to spend much time there.

23 Jan 2014 23:35

The Saqqara, Brighton

Called the Post and Telegraph now. An impressive regency building, think it may have been a bank at one time. The interior is also very impressive and elegant. Plenty of places to sit in plush surroundings, upstairs and downstairs. Generally more expensive than the other JD near by, but worth it in my opinion. Still offers a fine selection of real ales and decent pub grub at fair prices.

23 Jan 2014 23:16

The Bright Helm, Brighton

Light, airy and fairly spacious. The service is bog standard and just about everything else about the place is as well. There are definitely much more inspired pubs near by that are better in most respects. I personally much prefer the other main Weatherspoons in Brighton centre, The Post and Telegraph being a traditionalist.

23 Jan 2014 23:10

The Druids Head, Brighton

A cosy traditional pub in the lanes. It is often busy and can be a struggle to get served and find a decent place to sit due to it's popular location. It also has Sky tv and a decent food menu, all be it standard fair. I would recommend a visit to this pub only in off-peak hours such as mid-week at lunchtimes.

23 Jan 2014 23:02

The Ship of Fools, Croydon

Depressing place I thought, although it had it's fair share of characters. Most people in there were pissed as a fart most of the time. A proper old pissheads pub. Shame it closed though.

23 Jan 2014 22:51

Arkwrights Wheel, Croydon

Used to like this pub, when it was owned and run by the old Irish fellow who smoked cigars. There were some right characters in this pub as well, most of whom were friendly and a good laugh as well. Shame it was taken over and turned into a third world buffet.

23 Jan 2014 22:47

Postal Order, Crystal Palace

A proper old man's boozer. Might go back in the summer, combined with some other pubs. Not the best selection of real ales for a wetherspoons but nothing to write home about.

23 Jan 2014 22:39

The Capitol, Forest Hill

Very close to Forest Hill station which is served by local trains and London Overground. You can't call this place a pub instead it is a converted cinema. It's internal dimensions feel more along the lines of a cathedral, with similar acoustics to boot. Friendly bar staff, an excellent choice of revolving real ales including locally brewed ones. A good pub if you want to enjoy a pint in a quiet place away from the madding crowd, except on weekends.

22 Jan 2014 23:40

The Spread Eagle, Croydon

If you like Fullers ales you can't go wrong here as they are always kept in top notch condition, with the full range available such as ESB and Chiswick. Lovely spacious, traditional interior. Decent clientele, not your usual Croydon riff raff. Good professional bar staff. Good outdoor seating area with patio heaters.

It's a shame there's not a better Youngs pub in Croydon, as on balance I prefer there ales to Fullers, especially Youngs special.

19 Jan 2014 21:56

All Bar One, Croydon

Not All Bar One, instead now part of the Slug and Lettuce chain. Modern, swish, pleasant surroundings with plenty of natural light. Bar staff are second rate, more like the sort you would expect in a down market chain like the Goose. So don't be surprised if they have an attitude. Decent selection of draft lagers including Hoegarrden. On a Saturday night they have a D.J. Expensive, don't expect to pay under £3.50 per pint. Customers seem well behaved.

19 Jan 2014 01:49

The Good Companions, Warlingham

It's not really surprising this god forsaken shithole has shut considering most of Hamsey Green is made up of New Addington over spill. People from Hamsey Green were always on a serious losing streak. The idiots thought they had really gone up in the world because they had moved from one shithole to another.

12 Jan 2014 01:07

The Bull, Limpsfield

If you like an ultra pretentious, middle class type of person like something out of little Britain, this place may be up your street. The bar staff have there heads so far up there own arses they can barely see the light of day. The real ale on tap is not particularly well kept and damn expensive. This pub is proper poncey stock broker belt. If you have any sense AVOID!

10 Jan 2014 19:47

The Holland Tringham, Streatham

Avoid like the plague. Bad bar staff who can't speak English. An arrogant Polish manager, unclean tables. The clientele look like they haven't bathed for years. Enough said.

8 Jan 2014 04:28

Moon Under Water, Norbury

Quite a nice well run little boozer. Just a shame it's on the London Road.

8 Jan 2014 04:19

The Hogshead, Beckenham

Slug and Lettuce now. Nice young ladies serving behind the bar. Pleasant inside with plenty of places to sit. Peroni which is nothing special is nearly £4 a pint. I would say it is more of an eatery than a place to guzzle ten pints.

8 Jan 2014 04:05

The Goose, Beckenham

Not a Goose outlet anymore, but is still the same for all intents and purposes. Plump, friendly women behind the bar. Plenty of places to sit in peace. A couple of real ales on tap and cheap draft lagers. Non- pretentious, bog standard chain outlet really. Don't know what the fuss below is about really.

8 Jan 2014 03:56

Patrick's, Beckenham

Arrogant, pretentious and unfriendly bar staff. Nothing particularly Irish about the place. No creamy Irish ale on tap, just over-priced Guinness and lager. Has Sky sports, but so do lot's of other places. Rip of prices as well. AVOID along with O'Neil's next door.

8 Jan 2014 03:43

O'Neill's, Beckenham

This place has gone downhill rapidly I'm afraid. Asked the barmaid for a pint of Caffery's and told it was not served there anymore. Which is a bloody poor show considering it is served at all the other O'Neil's I've been to and they are meant to be a chain of authentic Irish pubs. So I then asked for a pint of Smethwick's which they just happened to have run out of. So I settled for a pint of Guinness and was overcharged. AVOID this place and Patrick's next door like the plague unless you like being ripped of.

8 Jan 2014 03:36

Whispering Moon, Wallington

Bog standard Weatherspoons really. Trying to get served can be a pain as the bar is small and it gets quite busy with old geezers, so waits of over 5 minutes sometimes just to get a round in. The other issue when busy is trying to find a decent table with seats can be difficult, particularly when in a group. The men's toilets are small and cramped. Not a place I would go to for a session, just a quick pint and then of instead.

8 Jan 2014 03:12

The Windmill, Wallington

Went in there recently. The bar staff were friendly enough. Loud, ignorant punters doing lot's of shouting and swearing. Stupidly I opted for the only real ale on offer, Doombar which even when kept well has a sour aftertaste, but this was more like drinking vinegar from a pint glass. I downed the whole pint somehow. After I was convinced I wasn't going to be sick I left this dump of a place and headed for the Weatherspoons to get a pint of Kronenburg to mask the taste. It won't be long hopefully before this sh**hole is turned into flats.

8 Jan 2014 02:49

The Pilgrim, Caterham

Typical chain pub environment inside. The barman was fine. I ordered a pint of Guinness and it came to £3.90 which I thought was rather steep. Unfortunately, when I went in all the real ales were of, which needless to say was a disappointment. I think if it priced more competitively, say like Weatherspoons it would do better custom as it is dead at lunchtimes.

8 Jan 2014 00:07

The King and Queen, Caterham

An excellent Fullers pub with the usual selection of ales on tap and friendly staff. The insides of the pub are excellent, being split into 4 separate rooms that lead of one another. It has a real homely traditional feel about it which I like. Without a doubt probably the best pub in Caterham and definitely the best pub in Caterham On The Hill.

7 Jan 2014 23:56

Old Surrey Hounds, Caterham

A pleasant traditional English boozer. Once through the front door you are greeted by a central bar with a chequered tiled floor, lots of oak panelling and wood with high stalls and comfortable red leather benches. There is a good selection of real ales and stouts on tap, and good value traditional pub grub available. The bar maid was a young lady who was also very pleasant and doing a sterling job of looking after the customers. Sky sports is available here and would be an excellent place to watch the football. It benefits from being very close to Caterham station and within the Oyster card zone, needless to say I will be returning. Probably, the best pub in Caterham.

7 Jan 2014 23:47

Half and Half, Croydon

It was a good little bar until they stopped doing Koenig Ludwig draft wheat beer. The bottled European beers just don't compete. They still do the proper Czech Bud draft with both hop varieties but nether less it is still not in the same league as Koenig Ludwig draft. The other draft beers they do include Lowenbrau which is similar to becks really, and two Dark Star real ale varieties on tap. This place was alright for a while but lately seems to be expensive and the clientele seem rather pretentious.

6 Jan 2014 03:06

The Cherry Trees, South Norwood

Not a bad place. Right next to Norwood Junction so excellent if you need to catch the train. Polish owned and run. Clean and pleasant inside, with a choice of standard draft lagers, not sure about the real ale. A large beer garden out back which is quite pleasant in summer. They have a duke box here and will turn the volume up if you ask them to, as well as a darts board. They will accept away supporters as well as Palace fans. Most of the regulars are friendly and will not course you any grief, the bar staff are friendly as well. A good place for a quick pint if you are passing by, as it is one of the better pubs in the local area.

6 Jan 2014 01:59

The Earl of Eldon, South Croydon

Once inside the décor is very average, uninspiring. Not many places to sit when busy, the beer garden is literally just a small smoking area out the back with a wooden bench. They do all the usual draft lagers and a couple of real ales. They have live music/karaoke at weekends, as well as a small pool table. Never tried the food so can't comment on that. In the summer they have a BBQ out the back and close of the street next to it. All in all a very average pub, in a very average area.

6 Jan 2014 01:29

The Stag and Hounds, South Croydon

If you like an aggressive, local community boozer , with over-priced premium strength lagers, sky sports and banter with locals this place may be for you. If not don't bother.

6 Jan 2014 01:13

The Old Fox and Hounds, Croydon

Popped in here after the Ship of Fools closed and was pleasantly surprised once inside. A cosy pub inside, with a friendly/not so friendly Irish landlord. It is a Green king pub so everything on offer is bog standard, but to be honest you'd have to be an idiot to expect anything else in a place like West Croydon. They have quiet background music and Sky sports so can get quite busy when the footy is on. It is a case of a pub (although nothing special) definitely being better than the area it is in.

6 Jan 2014 01:03

Tiger Tiger, Croydon

Happy hour is now 5-7pm so a pint of Guinness goes from £2 to over £4 after seven as do the draft lagers. Hopefully will be returning to the original happy hour of 5-9pm soon, as I would imagine custom will tail of rapidly otherwise. When it is happy hour and all the eye candy is out behind the bar the place is buzzing. Before or after happy hour my advice is go elsewhere unless you've got money to burn.

6 Jan 2014 00:37

The Ship, Croydon

A good little boozer, well run with a decent selection of real ales. Bar staff are always friendly and will have a chat. The punters are mainly rocker types as it plays a lot of heavy Metallica in the evening at weekends. A good place that I would say is definitely worth a visit, particularly as it is one of the oldest pubs in the area.

6 Jan 2014 00:28

The Porter and Sorter, Croydon

Went there quite recently on a Friday and was annoyed buy the attitude of the bar staff. I went to the bar and asked for a pint of Marston's oyster stout and the lad behind the bar said it was of without an apology, and seemed to be irritated that I didn't here him first time. I then went for the Marston's Pedigree and after one sip found it to be bottom of the barrel and warm. I told him it was warm and yet again he displayed his abysmal attitude buy saying I have just poured it, and looked at me as if I was deluded. The little s*** didn't even offer me a new pint and or apologise. So I drank the warm pint and left the place annoyed. I know of other people who have had a similar experience in the P and S. Until the manager there get's a grip buy sacking the bar staff and getting some in that understand the concept of customer service I shall not be returning.

6 Jan 2014 00:20

Milan Bar, Croydon

Some of the clientele from the Ship of Fools now frequent these premises. In the day time it is a hardened drinkers hangout, buy early evening it has the usual Croydon filth. For me it's a one pint and I'm of type place.

5 Jan 2014 23:58

The Goose on the Market, Croydon

If you've hit upon hard times the goose may be for you. Very reasonably priced if not limited selection of draft lager's. If your into real-ale forget it, go to the George instead.

5 Jan 2014 23:49

The George, Croydon

On the beer front it has to be the best in the area by a mile, (real ale paradise). What I don't like about it is the fact you have to jostle with other punters to get to the bar. Trying to find a decent seat can be problematic, as it is usually packed in the afternoon and evening. Most of the clientele are paddy's with gambling/drink addictions.

5 Jan 2014 23:39

The Skylark, Croydon

Massively over-rated in my opinion. The whole place suffers from a sterile feel with virtually no atmos, (the bar staff don't help). Probably alright if your a professional pi**head but otherwise very boring. The only time I may return is in the summer, they have a nice beer garden out the back.

5 Jan 2014 23:23

The Purley Arms, South Croydon

The bar staff seem weary of new custom here (not particularly friendly), and I can smell a clique amongst the punters. Better of going to a centre like Purley or Croydon where you get a larger pool of people. On the beer front, one positive is they always have about 2-3 draft bitters on tap. For me it's a one pint and of situation.

5 Jan 2014 23:11

Foxley Hatch, Purley

A small weatherspoons of the beaten track. It's got all the usual things you'd expect in a JD such as a good selection of draft bitters. The bar staff are fine as is everything else. The one thing that would prevent me drinking regularly at the Foxley is the substantial risk of dying of boredom.

5 Jan 2014 22:48

The Jolly Farmers, Purley

This pub could be alright if the owner spent some money on it, otherwise it remains what it is- a dump. The insides look like they haven't been touched in about 40 years. The bogs have got that well used look and feel about them, although they don't stink. On the upside I have never had a bad pint there as far as I remember.

5 Jan 2014 22:36

The Rectory, Purley

Must be about the best bar in Purley, and that's not saying much as the competition is pretty dire. It's part of a chain, but it benefits from a decent range of draft lagers (including Grolsch) and draft bitters (Bombardier). Typical chain type bar staff, the premises are a decent size with plenty of comfy places to sit. The food is standard pub fair which is fine. If I had to drink in Purley this is where I would go.

5 Jan 2014 22:25

EllIOTTS, Purley

Went in this bar on a Saturday night for a quick pint and found it truly uninspiring, loud moronic people, no where decent to sit down, poky bar area, poky men's bogs, chances are I won't be returning until the council grant it a strip bar licence.
