The Wheatsheaf Inn, Woodhouse Eaves

I have been coming here for nearly 30 years. It has always been very good, with plenty of charm and character and still is. It is especially good on a summers evening or daytime.

Actually, the Wheatsheaf has in my 30 years always been very food oriented - with a restaurant upstairs. Considering the neighbourhood and clientele out this way, food and drink is the perfect mix to suit the requirements of many of the local populace, it is an expensive village and quite rightly the pub aims to serve the people in the community with what they want. However the bar is nice to drink at too, and as the weekend evenings progress there can be a great atmosphere.
As for it's unusual opening hours, well yes, rather than run up costs opening when there are no customers, I think the owners would rather open when they can make money and thereby maximise the investment back into the business, which is clearly something that they take seriously. It is not a traditional village **drinking** pub, but they don't seem to mind when I treat it like one. It is a great place for an evening by the fire or the bar, with great beer. If you like £3 a pint, or bogof don't go.

It seems to me that blue scrump would prefer a pub to risk going out of business than to adapt to the changing landscape and hence his score of zero.

Miller of Mansfield, Goring

Mixed feelings. Prides itself on its restuarant which we paid about 23 for a Torneados Rossini - steak. It wasnt that great, but nothing too wrong - just lacked "wow".
Another lunch time the 7 cheese cake garnish contained a piece of mouldy fruit, and the beer had black bits floating in it.

Not over impressed, but not disappointed enough to stay away.

The Bell, Waltham St Lawrence

Poor show:
Beautiful surroundings/gardens and nice looking pub. My proffessional collegues and I come here for lunch REGULARLY. Even though we should be recognised as regular custoemrs, the bar staff are still grumpy, miserable and verging on rude and ignorant.
The last three times Ive ordered food, the staff said that I hadnt ordered the food they forgot to process.

Im not working in the area any longer, I wont miss this place.

The Crescent, Salford

The Salford Uni lecturers cheated at the pub quiz. (1996).
Unique atmosphere, good beer. Fabolous pub

The Globe, Leicester

Times change as has the Globe. I went in a while back and it has changed here but still has some element of what it used to be when I was there in my teens - anything goes uber cool of alternative life in Liecester.
Back then it was the centre of goth, rock, alternative and stude with a mix of old time hells angels, hardened drinkers as well as the occaisonal townie or business suit. It still seems to accept this ecclectic mix without a raised eyebrow in sight.

Will always have a fond place in my heart, back in the early 90s I would have said it was the best pub ever.

Still on my list of places i have to visit when I go back to Leics.

The Allied Arms, Reading

Well.
What can I say other than seriously disappointed in this place after such a promising start.

I though the land lord was a top bloke, always there with a freindly chat to greet you. Ive actually spoken to this chap quite a few times, and thought we knew each other. How wrong can I be?
Read on:

My very, very respectable brother and I were having a quiet beer in the Allied after a meal at Old Siam. Drunken Irish Whitley people invited themselves to join us, rather than complain, only having half a pint left, my brother and I agreed we would move on as soon as we finished our beers and get away from
the people that were sitting at our table. Moments later 5 police offices were in the pub.
Apparently the scum that came to join us had been reported for drug dealing.
We were searched and humiliated in front of the whole pub, and now that nice old man on the door wont let me in any longer.

Im an educated, responsible, proffessional and I thought that the landlord would easily know that I dont drink with these people. So I tried to reason with him in a freindly manner.

He actually threatened to radio to the police and have me forcible removed from the pavement outside.

What riles me, is that he let the drug dealers into his pub, which were nothing to do with us. And yet becuase of this, he bars me!

Some may say he is looking after his pub. Which is not something I question. However Im appalled at his approach and would recommend that if you dont want to be stripped and spread in front of the whole pub, humiliated and intimidated by this mans freindly police force (he has a direct radio to them). Then Id say stay away.

The Old Nags Head, Edale

much better than the other one :-|

The Rambler Country House, Edale

In my opinion it was the worst steak and kidney pie Ive ever had. The gravy in the pie looked like it was made from little bits of paper mache.

The Rising Sun, Reading

Proper rock pub. Great jukebox, normally can find a decent pint. Freindly, i have a shaved head and dress smart, but dont feel any malice from the crowds of young and old alternative types.
Seen a lot of live acts here, some good some bad, also a dj on occasions...normally too loud for me though in the low ceiling pub.

The Blagrave Arms, Reading

Like it. Good music but can talk without shouting. Good beer, trouble free crowd of what seem like nice punters. Ran out of beer a couple of times though.

A real pub in a town of fake platic bars.

The Pear Tree Inn, Woodhouse Eaves

Loved it when I used to go there a while back (10 yrs). Was there recently, doesnt seem to have changed much.

Royal Oak, Kirby Muxloe

Re the quote from Holly :- Jackson is the surname of the family that used to run this pub when I was in the area.

In gerneral I agree:- For a pub, the food was always good. Service was acceptable too. Nice customers (on the whole) but can be a bit cliquey. Decor and building is not particularly charming, but the pub makes up for it in other ways. I seem to remember the beer was quite good too.

Sweeney and Todd, Reading

Not bad wadworth 6x and another stong bitter (tanglefoot or old speckled hen - cant remember which).
Fantastic pies, and a unique charm. Best in the daytime when home made chips are available.

The Bugle, Reading

Beer quality varies from proper to not good. Great low key freindly no-nonsense pub once you find its charm.
Baffling juke box.
A good pub for singing a long to the juke box - loudly.

Me and my (22yrs - 40yrs) old friends love it.

Revolution, Reading

Dreadful, the same as every other non-pub. low leather sofas you fall into (if you like that great). Reminds me of the youth club school disco i grew up with. Had to get utterly tanked to enjoy that place as you do this one. "TUrn the volume up so customers cant talk and have to drink" seems to be the name of the game.
A truly [insert swear word of choice] awful place with no redeeming character at all.

The Allied Arms, Reading

Currently climbing the list of this 32 year olds fave boozers. Good pint, can take or leave the other punters as you see fit. And blessed-be its a real pub. A rare treat in the ikea created landscape of Reading
