Clerkenwell House, Farringdon

Last time I was there a work colleague bought a lunchtime "salad sandwich combination" consisting of 2 slices of toast and a few slivers of lettuce. It came to 11 quid. Suffice to say he went back to Fleetwood bankrupt.

The Dickens Inn, Tower Hill

Mock villagey style pub in a tourist trap environment. Expensive drinks but pleasant atmosphere. Sunday's would be nice though it's always understandably rammed. Okay if you can get seats, the view over the wharf is nice on a sunny day. A walk around St.Katherine's dock is recommended to find a cheaper establishment. Minories is up the road for cheaper drinks though the words frying pan and fire come to mind.

The Betsey Trotwood, Clerkenwell

Was here with a one time girlfriend for our first drink together - not the most romantic of places but! Small, odd shaped boozer squashed between the junction of farringdon road and farringdon lane that gets the guardian crowd form across the road at lunchtimes. Serious, silent looking roadie type bartender. Good atmosphere after hours though a touch hard to move or get a seat when the crowd's up.

The Great Eastern, Isle of Dogs

Out and out east end boozer, be prepared to be a local or suffer the wrath of silence and stares. Try not to step on the lost teeth that litter the floor. Pool tables and fruit machines definitely off limits to first timers. Cheap beer though the Pier Tavern down the road is a less worrisome pint.

All Bar One, Moorgate

Always good for a sip or 10 after work with the lads before heading home. Get past the upmarket types and snag a brown leather couch by the back windows and you can easily settle in for a cosy session. Big and spacious, not bad service for a city pub though it does get rammed most weekdays.

Ye Olde White Bear, Hampstead

I'm striking the medal for you now buffy - it just needs a place to be sent. A 2 year working visa spent living above a pub, lol.

The Goose, Holborn

Not a place to play canasta I'm sure, though, where would you play cards in a pub?! Maybe you should try Clerkenwell House

The Brockley Barge, Brockley

Yes, the Barge tends to live up to it's monniker. It seems that's how the staff and management run the place - tables overflowing with dirty glasses, dirty tables with plates of half eaten food not taken away and locals treating their benefit cheque drink up like a funeral wake on a float to nowhere. Not many redeeming features about this pub except the beer garden out the french doors, which is okay in summer and the BR train station about 2 mins away that gives you an escape route.

The Tollgate Tavern, Beckton

If you ever miss your last DLR or have to wait the standard 42 minutes for a train from Beckton - last on the line and don't want to walk to East Ham, the Tollgate next to ADSA might be the option. Avert your eyes to the Hammers room to the right upon entry and all the shimmering gold abounding from each patron's chest, fingers and wrist. Eyes to the floor, don't make too much noise and enjoy your pint. A bit of geezer charm surrounding the teak wood interior.

The Goose, Holborn

10 Time better when it was privately owned and trading under the Sir Christopher Hatton. Weatherspoons rips the soul out of yet another pub.

The Pakenham Arms, Clerkenwell

Was definitely the place for a late pint until the recent 24hr switch. The posties are a permanent fixture as are the 16yr old wide boys when the footy is on. Friendly blonde girl working behind the bar and an everchanging selection of beer.

The Hamilton Hall, Liverpool Street

Akin to the Knights Templar on Chancery Lane - a huge, high ceiling expanse that is always rammed Mon -Fri and impossible to move in or get a seat. Cheap beer to be sure - If you can get service, however a fairly soul-less affair with no atmosphere.

The Sir John Oldcastle, Farringdon

Three words - 99p pint days.
The rest you can take or leave, the food is shyte and it has always been like Antarctica inside.

Clerkenwell House, Farringdon

I'd love to take the cast iron spiral stairs inside and roger the pretentious geeks that work in and frequent this place - the 2 pool tables downstairs are ok though to get away from the Warhol crowd if you're in for a lunchtime sip

The White Hart, New Cross

well dodgy, went in there for a pint and never went back. The 4 people that were in there, 3 of them staff, watched me drink my pint in silence. What it would be like drinking in the old east germany...

The Union Tavern, Clerkenwell

I used to live right next to it and it was run by a very serious Frenchman and slack staff. Expensive drinks/food, the atmosphere is ok, but that's about it.

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

Loved this place for a sneaky pint at lunch times during work. You have to duck under parts of the place it is that low in parts! Old wooden beams and a village like atmosphere - brilliant.

The Pakenham Arms, Clerkenwell

Great for an after closing pint - late licence pub catering for the Mount Pleasant posties til 3am. Fairly ordinary inside but good if you've missed your last train. 2 big screen tv's aswell.

The One Tun, Farringdon

Back alley boozer with no frills except the grey ones hanging in the window. Good for a lunch time lager or an after work session. Check out the permanent fixture in the corner, a retired gent in plaid with a huge handlebar moustache.
