The Queen's Head, Chelmsford

Chelmsford's best pub, in my opinion. Excellent range and quality of ales, Decent pub food, convivial atmosphere, nice building and friendly landlord all add up to a great place to enjoy a few ales.

Great pub, excellent food and top qualilty local beers allied to friendly and efficient service in a lovely setting. Very hard to fault, expect to return again and again.

The Station Arms, Southminster

Visited for the first time last month (July-13) and very impressed. Excellent quality of ales in immaculate and traditional pub that has no pretensions and is all the better for it. Landlord kindly provided a free sample of "black lager", something I've not seen before but would certainly recommend you try if in the locale.

Queens Head, Burnham On Crouch

Cracking little back street boozer, serving several good qualilty ales, mostly local in clean, tidy and traditional surroundings. Bar staff and locals alike very friendly. Well worth coming away from the river side pubs to find this one, as the best drinking pub in Burnham, if not the best situated.

The Chequers Inn, Goldhanger

Great pub, fabulous atmosphere, extensive and quality selection of real ales and truly outstanding food served in timeless and well presented style. Well worth going out of your way to visit this pub, in my opinion, it's by some way the best pub in this part of Essex and amongst the best I've visited in the UK to be honest.

Goodmanham Arms, Goodmanham

Visited for the first time in 30 years on 5th August, as back on a rare trip to the area. What an absolute gem! Fantastic, well kept, and amazingly good value beers, in a building that oozes atmosphere and attention to detail in a very tradiotnal manner, entirely in keeping with the locality. The fact the pub has its own micro brewery producing excellent ales (in particular a very fine mild) was a real bonus and treat. I really hope this pub continues to flourish, it deserves to.

The Prince of Wales, Stow Maries

The POW remains an excellent pub after many years in the same ownership of Rob Walster. It seemlessly marries good food, a great selection of well kept real ales, ciders and foreign beers, with a convivial ("musak" free) atmosphere, generated in a traditional Essex weatherboard, flagstone floored gem of a building. It's further assisted by an eclectic clientele and occasionally outrageous landlord! The pub has excellent quality rooms, puts on various music and comedy and fireworks events throughout the year, catering for residents and visitors equally well. It is, in my opinion, amongst the very best pubs in the UK and well worth seeking out by anyone who enjoys a genuinely proper pub and all that that means.
