The Lord Clyde, Borough

Just a few answers to the management of Lord Clyde.

First of all, I am not random talking, I can assure you I do not mistake this pub with another one, I had it written on my London map, as I always do in the UK, following the advices of this site.

1) Maybe I have mistaken the name of the real ale, quite surely I was drinking Hooky (similar pronunciation in phonetic Italian)...and maybe I didn't see the other pumps because of the real mess, anyway I am 100% sure that two pumps were out of service, and this is not good in my humble opinion.

2) We ate in a round table near the book shelf (I was pleased to see one of Sharpe books by Bernard Cornwell, I have them all), me and my girlfriend very packed with another couple, is that a large table? Don't think so really. Behind there is a sofa with another table but it was taken by two girls.

3) It was extremely hot, like being in a greenhouse, in everyone's opinion.

Poor beer range and average food, too hot and packed, we had a very very uncomfortable evening and I have reported it, saying also I will give this pub another try.

I think this is the spirit of this site.

The Windmill, Mayfair

We popped into the Windmill at lunch time during our trip to London in november 2009.

Nice Young's pub with three real ales on hand pump (Young's Bitter, Well's Bombardier and another one I don't remember, I tried them all, very well kept) and a stunning victorian interior, gold and red walls with great decor and thousands of prints and old photos.

Above all top quality pies at reasonable prices, they have a large selection of home made pies, really delicious! We ate downstairs near the bar, among several office workers (the pub was not packed at all), and the landlady was very kind...highly recommended.

Ship Anson, Portsmouth

We went to the Ship Anson a week ago at lunch time, during our visit to Portsmouth historic dockyard, this pub is very close to the main entrance of the dockyard so we decided to pop in to order some food and a couple of pints.

The pub has a nice exterior and interior too, with lots of prints on the walls, check out the portrait of admiral Anson.

Food was ok (scampi for me, fish and chips for my girlfriend) and very very cheap, really worth the price, and the girl who served us was extremely kind and helpful.

Unfortunately they have only two hand pumps, the ales on were Greene King IPA and Old Speckled Hen, nothing special but both well kept.

A non pretentious pub with good and very cheap food.

The Still and West, Portsmouth

Hi, I am a real ale lover from Venice (Italy), visiting the UK very often.

We (me and my girlfriend) went from London to Portsmouth a week ago, visited the wonderful historic dockyard and the harbour and then popped into the Still And West (previously marked on the map) to order some food and a couple of pints of real ale.

This pub is almost "on the water", great seaside location, there is a bar downstairs with lot of space and tables near the windows, and a restaurant upstairs with a kind of enclosed porch overlooking the sea, as you can see in the photos above.

The landlord was very nice, first we had two pints (Discovery for me and London Pride for my girlfriend) and sat in one of those comfortable sofas, then we went upstairs to have dinner.

Here the view is absolutely awesome: you dominate the Portsmouth harbour, see the ferries coming in and going out, and at your right you have the modern Spinnaker Tower, with green light that evening. We were served by an extremely kind girl, always smiling and helpful, who made us feel welcome and at home really. Our two fish dishes were excellent, reasonably priced too, and our pints of ESB (my favourite Fuller's ale) and HSB were simply delicious, perfect!

The landlord also gave me a clear glass of London Pride for my collection of real ale pints, thank you again you and the girl who served us, we will surely come back soon in our next trip to UK, well worth the trip to Portsmouth...what else to say, superb pub.

The Elbow Room, Tottenham

Hi, I am a real ale lover and Everton supporter from Venice (Italy), visiting the UK very often.

We (me and my girlfriend) popped into this pub a week ago (coming from Seven Sisters tube station) at about 11:30am the day of the match Tottenham - Everton, this is a great boozer full of Spurs supporters, I was not wearing blue colors but I had no problems at all with the locals, very friendly and chatty.

The interior has its charm, traditional and simply wooden pub with several lcd screens showing Sky Sports, and above all great real ales on top, three pumps were on: Courage, Bombardier and another one I don't remember, I tried them all and were all in excellent nick, and very very cheap! Of course they were served in plastic glasses, as always happens the day of the match at The lane.

We really enjoyed our staying at the Elbow Room, great atmosphere, the staff is kind and the clientele very nice, extremely cheap (and good) beers, a must to see in Tottenham before a Spurs game.

Adam and Eve, Westminster

Nice little pub with a great traditional wooden interior and decor.

Standard selection of real ales, four pumps were on a week ago: Fuller's London Pride, Young's Bitter, Adnams Bitter and Well's Bombardier (my favourite), I tried them all, very well kept and very well priced!

The staff was kind and the atmosphere relaxing, we felt very confortable, reccommended pub.

The Lord Clyde, Borough

Hi, I am a real ale lover from Venice (Italy), visiting the UK very often.

We (me and my girlfriend) popped in a week ago at 6:15 pm to have a good pint and order some food.

Wrong choice. The pub was full, we had to share a little table with another couple (very nice guys) near the book shelves, above all it was extremely hot, everyone around us was sweating and complaining untill a window was finally opened, not a confortable dinner at all.

The food was just passable, two real ales were finished, so two hand pumps turned, out of service, only one choice (I don't know if in the other area of the pub there were other pumps but we simply couldn't move and reach that because of the real mess), Kiss or something with this word. My pint was ok.

The exterior of this pub is simply awesome, very traditional and chatty boozer, with a small selection of books inside, the staff is kind, but my advice is to avoid eating here, at least at dinner in week-ends; the food is not worth, and the pub too crowded for my taste, very very packed.

The Lord Clyde is clearly a drinkers pub, unfortunately also my real ale experience was not very good, because of the limited offer (only one pump on as written before) and it was about 6:20 pm when I ordered so not too late I think.

I'll give it another try for sure during my next trip to London.

The Prince Edward, Bayswater

Hi, I am a real ale lover from Venice (Italy), visiting UK very often.

I agree with most of the reviews beneath, the Prince Edward is a real gem, one of my 5 best pubs in London, in my opinion.

We popped in a week ago, after a morning spent in Portobello market, the staff is extremely kind, particularly the guy who was very nice with me and my girlfriend, gave us good suggestions and tasters about the several real ales offered.

I tried them all (four real ales if I am not mistaken), unfortunately don't remember all their names, Hopping Hare was on for sure, my favourite was Badger, a Dorset ale with a peculiar taste, my girlfriend enjoyed a good pint of Suffolk light ale (a spring ale as the guy told us), all very well kept ales.

We also had lunch and the food was ok, kind of steak with vegetables for me, jacket potato for my girlfriend, very good portions at reasonable prices.

The exterior with prince Edward portrait is awesome, the interior of the pub is quite traditional, a wooden island bar with stools, some sofas and a large table on one side, small tables and other stuff on the other; we sat and ate in the sofas, very very confortable, there is a lcd screen which was showing football (english Championship highlights) with volume switched off, perfect. Nice furniture and prints on the walls but above all great music in the background (kind of melodic rock-indie-pop) at very low volume, creating a fantastic atmosphere really!

A pub worth searching for it, both if you are in Bayswater or in any other area of London, highly reccomended.

The White Swan, Pimlico

Hi, I am a real ale lover from Venice (Italy), visiting UK very often.

I totally disagree with some previous reviews.

First of all, at 8:15 in London it is almost impossible to have dinner in a pub because they all have their kitchen closed, so if you are planning to eat just pop in earlier, it's just their habit so why this complaining?

Then I read about rude landlord, poor service and the risk of a fight in the White Swan...I am sceptic...maybe I was just lucky, but when we (me and my girlfriend) went in at 7:00 pm a week ago to have a couple of pints and order some food we found a quite decent pub, more than decent I would say.

The landlord was kind, maybe just not on the chatty side but never rude, a good range of real ales was available, I enjoyed a very good pint of Doombar, Young's Bitter and London Pride, my girlfriend had another one I don't remember exactly, anyway all well kept and at reasonable price too.

My food was excellent, I ordered duck breast with a delicious sauce on and potatoes and several vegetables of course, my girlfriend had sausages and mash which was ok.

All with a nice atmosphere, the pub was not completely full, there were people of all ages eating and chatting, the music in the background was not too loud...so a good experience really.

Maybe not a traditional boozer, not a drinkers pub, not a gem to search at all costs, but the real ales and the food are just perfect and quite cheap.

I reccomend this pub, not a bad one as written before, if you are in Pimlico give it a chance.
