The Hogshead, Hornchurch

I am a fifty year old man and I was asked to be frisked at the door by a surly doorman. I refused so I was not let in. Judging by the type of folk in here, I do not think it was the place for me.

Customers look at you as if they are scoping to see if you have anything worth nicking. I felt on edge in this pub all of the time. Decor not very nice and the atmosphere you could cut with a knife. AVOID

Read the reviews here and asked the prices before I got to the bar. Walked out straight away into Hornchurch town centre.

I have to agree with real ale man. I was in this pub tonight and last night and the place was packed out so it can't be that bad otherwise people would not go there would they? The selection of real ciders is really good as I have not seen cider available like this anywhere and it beats Strongbow hands down (it tastes like cider and is strong). They have 11 real ales that a feiendly old man in the corner told me change every day. They have doormen now at the door and they are polite, friendly and actually open the door for you and say hello when you enter and goodnight when you leave. All in all a really pleasent experience. Thommo were you really at this pub when you wrote your review, or where you elsewhere as this pub is nothing like you describe.

How expensive is this pub. You really do need an American Express Platinum card to drink here. I notice that the kids in their little cars have a way of avoiding the excess charge on the beer and that is to have a cool box in the boot of their Ford Fiestas full of bottles of Budweiser. Next time I will bring my own wine. I would just avoid during the hot weather as the chavs migrate from afar to this watering hole.

Not a bad place as I popped in here for a quick drink the other night. It is small with enough room for around 20 people. The landlord is friendly enough but the regulars do have a habit of giving you that "your in my manor" look which made us feel uncomfortable so we left.

At least the GI has one fan. Personally I would give this establishment a very wide berth unless you know people on the estate, you are a druggie a yob or are on benefits.

Right lets get this pub right. The element in the pub can only be described as 'terrible'. The customers are loud drunk and abrasive, and the staff and managers allow this to happen. On allowing this to happen one night a customer was badly beaten up by a barred customer who was allowed back in. The managers seem to be afraid of the drunks that inhabit the bar area and refuse to do anything about them apart from continuing to serve them. I agree with previous posters in that if you want to give up buying fags, just walk in here because the smoke hits you as soon as you walk in through the doors. The pub was shut recently for a refurb, but the best thing to do would be to refurb the staff and managers and put someone in here that knows what they are doing.

I have just moved to Hornchurch and I must say that all the bad reviews are a little wrong. I felt intrigued by this smell and the Gareth character, so I set out to find the truth. I stood at the bar by an easel for most of last night, and I could not smell any wierd smell. I got chatting to a friendly member of bar staff, and she informed me that the bar had been replaced a few months ago. I also had the coldest pint of Fosters I have ever had. I asked a manager how the beer gets as cold as this, and he said that Wetherspoons was rolling out some kind of new super cooling system that cools the beer to just below freezing point, so when it is served it is freezing cold. Just what you need on a hot sunny day. They are just missing a beer garden now. When I asked about this Gareth character I was informed that he had been "reassigned elsewhere". From what I could gather this chap is now working for another pub company in a pub called the Golden Lion in Romford. All I can say is people have mentioned things that are wrong with this pub, but at least the problems are getting fixed instead of being ignored. It appears to me to be well managed and in good hands. The bouncers even said hello to me when I entered and good night when I left. Never heard this before.
