The Cavendish, Manchester

Just re-opened under new management after been shut for a bit.

Couple of gay blokes running it now.

Night I was in there was only them and a couple of their friends in,but suppose will take a while for the word to get round it`s open again.

The Shakespeare, Manchester

The only pub I`ve seen in my life selling draught milk.It was a long time ago though.

Wouldn`t it be funny if when Stoke did their old trick of setting fire to a pub their locked in, the old bill STILL didn`t let them out.

The Talisman, Wythenshawe

It`s actually one of the better pubs in Wythenshawe.
But that`s more a comment on the rest of them than this one.

Corbieres Wine Cavern, Manchester

Always stinks of piss and the juke box is shit.

Only joking.

About the juke box I mean,it really does stink of piss.

The Waterhouse, Manchester

No need to worry about getting a seat now it`s no smoking.Hope the food is profitable for them, because it`s the only reason most people will go in now.

The Athenaeum, Manchester

Don`t let on if your an MCFC supporter in there.`cos they`re all barred.

And I mean ALL.

The Reef Cafe Bar, Manchester

Now called Sports Bar,which is a bit odd because when we were in they wouldn`t turn the TV`s over to football because they had it on MTV.

Also for a pub on a train station found it a bit strange they wouldn`t let children in.Must be plenty of people fancy popping in for a quick pint while waiting for their train who have the kids with them.

The Bulls Head, Manchester

Used to be one of my favourite pubs when they had the old vault.( Covered in football ticket stubs from all over the world.)

Now it`s an overpriced, characterless place that seems to open about once a month.Which is about once a month too often in my humble opinion.

The Old Grapes, Manchester

Make up of the punters can vary massively depending on the night.Right next door to The Opera House,so full of theatre goers when there`s a show on.Also been in there when gangs of Salfords finest have put in an appearance.

Think as a rule the customers are probably older than your average pub.Popular with middle aged I say.

And you would definately NOT be lucky if you were in there when Les Battersby is boring everyone in earshot, which is everyone in the pub in his case.

The Sawyers Arms, Deansgate

Never had food there or been in when utd are playing, but always pop in when down Deansgate and quite like the place.

Get a great atmosphere upstairs for the England games, and for horse racing fans, one of the few pubs that make a bit of an effort for Cheltenham.Always go there on the Tuesday for the big screen upstairs.

The Seven Oaks, Manchester

Pretty much ditto last two comments.
Always friendly, get a good crowd in,both dinner and night.

Don`t arrange to meet there unless you KNOW its open.Landlord seems to be getting windier about when he opens.Seen it shut even Saturday nights if there`s a whiff of potential football trouble rumours.

Winding steep stairs can make getting to the toilet a lot quicker than it should be when a bit tipsy.

test 16, Manchester

Good traditional pub.
Nowt special, but always worth a stop off.
Never seen gangs of knobheads in there, even at weekends, which is worth a mention for a city centre pub.

The Bishop Blaize, Old Trafford

Why do all Wetherpoons pubs have the toilets either 10 flights up or down stairs?

3 Feb 2006 20:31

The Bar, Chorlton cum Hardy

Not quite sure of R`s defination of an original pub,as there`s pubs in Chorlton that outdate it by more than 100 years, but that`s been picky I suppose.

One of the few "bars" as opposed to pubs I`ve got any time for. Mixture of your old school Chorlton and your new.." Oh I`ve heard Badly Drawn Tramp drinks in here" fanny types.

Tremendous selection of bottled beer.

3 Feb 2006 20:27

The Hillary Step, Whalley Range

About the same size as the laudrette next door but not quite as exciting.

No smoking.

3 Feb 2006 20:20

The Lloyds Hotel, Chorlton cum Hardy

Used to be THE best pub in Chorlton by a mile and one of Bass`s best pubs in terms of takings.

Sold it to John Willie Lees,re-named it Edwards and turned it into an expensive, crap restraunt that happened to sell beer.

Back to The Lloyds now,but still an expensive, crap restraunt that happens to sell beer.

The Salutation, Manchester

Seems to bring out the two extremes in people.
Some seem to think it`s the best pub in the world, others hate it.

I`m somewhere in the middle.

The "hate it" brigade usually cite it been really clicky.I know what they mean but don`t think it`s over the top and certainly never seen strangers been treated badly by the staff.

Beware of the invisable dips in the floor, deliberately
built on entrances to toilets to make even the most steady man hit the deck after a dozen pints.

The Czech Bar, Manchester

Not a bad student bar for non-students if you know what I mean?Always very good offers on selected drinks.Usually a good night.

Shuts when the students are away.

Not very good for quizzes by all accounts.

3 Feb 2006 19:46

The Pub, Manchester

Cheap student pub.
1.60 for lager last time I was in.
Typical student pub really, friendly enough, pool tables,Sky TV.Not recommended out of term time,as manager seems to be in charge of the bar/kitchen/serving food/changing barrells etc. on his own.

P.S.
Why do students search high and low for the pubs with the cheapest beer then happilly play pool all night for a pound a throw?

3 Feb 2006 19:39

The Airport Pub, Manchester Airport

Not really a fan of taking kids to pubs, but if you must, this is ideal. The biggest beer garden I`ve ever seen, with bouncy castle etc.in summer, and no way for them to escape except though the pub. Also they don`t let them in the main pub so it`s not too bad if your not with kids either.

3 Feb 2006 18:48

The Church Inn, Manchester

I would hate to ever see the pub that Shellow rates worse than this dump.

3 Feb 2006 17:42

The Cavendish, Manchester

Previously called Clyne`s Wine Bar and a bit of a dump.Since been done up last year has improved no end.A good mix of friendly locals and students.

Beer isn`t that cheap but not outragous by any means.

Cracking jukebox, pool table and all the Premiership games shown on a decent sized TV.

Open late most(maybe all) nights. Also have a quiz night and an open mike night, when anyone can get up and have a go on the guitar.Think that`s Thursdays.

Also do reasonably priced, decent food in the day.

Only a small place but friendly and well worth a visit.
