Dog and Gun, Keswick

Great pub overall with a good selection of local ales and regular beers, including summer ales and Jubilee Stout. Full of locals, walkers and dog owners: great if you like dogs (and good-looking, well-kept dogs at that). While the pub was busy on both evenings I visited, there was no problem finding a seat for food. Great food - goulash and rabbit suet pudding. Interestingly, they don't do sweets.

My only mild gripe is that the bar staff were slow at serving, despite a busy bar. This is the only aspect of the pub that I would characterise as "average", as opposed to the "very good" other aspects of the bar.

9/10

The Prince of Wales, Clapham

Great pub. Nice selection of beers. Nice atmosphere. Very old school.

The Sun, Clapham

I was in the Sun this evening for a beer and a burger; and was in last weekend for a beer.

I can understand some of the comments below. Since they were made, the interior has been renovated and the bar moved from a central position in the middle of the pub to the rear of the pub. This has had the effect of dramatically reducing the length of the bar, improving service, and also increasing the seating quite dramatically. They've also opened a beer garden on the roof (The Helios Room) for the summer.

Good range of beers including Cutthroat Porter, Sierra Nevada, Brooklyn, Doombar, Ubu Purity and the Wandsworth's local Sambrook's Wandle.

My burger was really good - served with loads of chips and some coleslaw. The other diners looked more or less happy with their grub.

Overall, a positive experience. Good atmosphere, good beer, good food. Looks like service has improved compared with previous reviews. I would try them again.

The George and Dragon, Downe

We visited the George & Dragon for Sunday lunch today (albeit on Bank Holiday Monday), as part of a ramble including a visit to Downe House.

The initial impression was positive, with low wooden beams and a traditional interior. They had a standard range of cask ales, including Harvey's, Timothy Taylor, London Pride and Young's Bitter. The beer was fine.

However, the food was a very poor. The meat in my Sunday roast was very strange: paper thin and very similar to sliced luncheon meat. My wife ordered a gammon baguette but received a roll with sliced luncheon ham and some limp leaves. When we asked the waitress about this, the reply was "But that is gammon". Where do you even begin with that?

In summary, ok beer, middling atmosphere, terrible food. Very disappointed with an 18 outlay for a beer, a tea and terrible grub.

The Rake, London Bridge

Great little pub, run by the same fellows who look after the Utobeer stand at the Borough Market.

They usually have a selection of 5-6 beers of various styles from around the UK and the world on draught, with an extensive selection of bottled beers. Knowledgeable staff.

The beer garden approximately doubles the space in the pub. Best in summers but with heating lamps in the winter.

9/10. Pros: loads of carefully looked-after beers of all styles on draught and by bottles. Excellent staff. Great when the weather is a little warmer. Cons: the only food available are posh crisps. There are millions of places to eat locally, though, if you're after some grub after a few pints.

The Swan and Edgar, Marylebone

The Swan & Edgar looks great, with a bookish theme throughout. Those coming for real ale (as I was) will be disappointed - it's primarily a wine bar with only Asahi and Becks on draught: and no bottled beers.

However, it might be a nice place to come for some grub (with wine) of an evening.

They do seem to book tables, even when empty, so I guess feel free to ring ahead and book your spot.

5/10. Pros: great decor with book and newspaper theme, coupled with old photos of the Swan & Edgar general store. Cons: definitely not a pub for the ale connoisseur, rather for the wine gurgler.
