The Hope, Carshalton

Why knock something that has obviously had so much hard work and effort put into it? The car parking situation makes perfect sense and it is quite simple. You park your car in the car park and upon entering the pub punch your number plate into the contraption on the bar. Thus avoiding said fine. I'm looking forward to my Sunday lunchtime drink this weekend. Why? Because it is a wonderful place to while away a few hours with some exceptionally kept and interesting beers, exceptional bar staff and fantastic atmosphere. I am yet to try The Trafalgar but I am very much looking forward to it.

The Hope, Carshalton

Quite simply the most perfect pub. Fantastic and ever changing range of beers on draft and some absolute gems in the fridge. Food offerings are simple and very well priced but the focus quite rightly is on the beer. Faultless.

The Ship, Croydon

Awful. Quite possibly one of the worst Marstons pubs I have ever had the misfortune to enter and that is saying something. Hobgoblin on tap was vile, very doubtful the lines have ever been cleaned. Backed it to the barmaid who freely admitted the landlord "could not care less about the pub, isn't that bright and is running the pub into the ground." Further comments by some of the locals as to the state of the pub, its management and its dreadful beer guaranteed I won't be back.

The Green Dragon, Croydon

Superbly run town centre pub without being identikit by description. Commitment to real ale which is kept superbly with two on gravity. Knowledgeable staff with an interest in the product they sell. Various entertainment throughout the week including a popular Monday quiz and lunchtime jazz on a Sunday. The latter actually encouraging me away from Ronnie Scott's Sunday Jazz lunch. Food is available from early 'til late and closer to what pub food used to be like, as opposed to the microwaveable variety so many pubs pass off as 'home made'. A large function room also exists upstairs complete with bar. This holds a number of events throughout the week as well as being available for private hire. In my opinion the most complete pub in Croydon and I have drunk in most of them. Well worth a visit whichever day of the week you choose.

The Red Lion, St James

A fantastic little pub and my favourite place to while away a Saturday afternoon. All the usual Fullers ales on draft and kept to the usual high standard. Staff are pleasant and attentive. A classic London pub decor wise which adds to the overall charm. Can be very busy at times as really is little but well worth a visit.
