The Masonic Arms, Castle Douglas

Probably the best eating place in the area - but you must book. Good food, attentive service - and try and get a table out in the extension. Beer is the usual Scottish beer.

The Five Horseshoes, Little Berkhamsted

I brought a Canadian friend to this pub as I had had good food there in the past. Sorry to say that I found a hair in my entree - and sent it back. Much apologies from the staff, and a comment from him that he had belaboured the chef for not wearing his hat. Then skipped the rest of that course and ordered dessert - to find a hair (suspiciously like a pubic hair!) in the custard. We left without paying!

The Old Cross Tavern, Hertford

Good food, good beer, and glad they moved the bar to the end of the room!

The Kings Head, Apethorpe

My wife and I visited Apethorpe (an ancestral home - anyone know the history of Reeve's pond?) in the summer - and enjoyed an excellent meal and real ale in the Kings Head. Definitely recommended! Friendly old pub, with an attractive dining room...
