The Tavistock Inn, Tavistock

This pub has been under new ownership for 9 weeks now and is in the Punch Taverns group of pubs. We had a very pleasant couple of pints of Dartmoor Brewery's Jail Ale there (the others were St Austell Tribute and Sharpe's Doombar) and got chatting to the landlord, who is originally from Manchester but has been in Devon for a long time. He has the right approach to running a good pub, and wants it to be a welcoming, friendly pub for locals and visitors alike, and is actively discouraging the local "yoof" unless they are very well behaved. The decor is quirky and eclectic, with books and newspapers and a pool table, and a real fire. They do basic pub food all day (we didn't try as we already had a table booked elsewhere). We loved it and would make a beeline for it next time we are in Tavistock - they deserve to succeed!

The Bishop Blaise, Derby

We visited this pub at the weekend on the strength of it being in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. We tried two of the Burton Bridge beers, which should have been delicious, but we were disappointed. One was in very poor condition and the other was served too warm. Nice modern interior.

The Falstaff, Derby

Only just off Normanton Road - but you have to know it's there! Once you do find it, you will be glad you did. Their own beers are very nice, although maybe not quite hoppy enough for my taste and are well worth searching out. Very friendly on both sides of the bar - we were made to feel very welcome and only departed reluctantly.

The Flowerpot, Derby

Derby is a hidden gem and much misunderstood. Apart from its other attributes (friendly, manageable size, lots of green spaces, excellent curries) it is a mecca for Real Ale fans - and the Flowerpot is a must for anyone visiting the area. We were in on Saturday and I think there were about 15 ales on - we tried four and all were in perfect condition. A friendly, characterful pub - and they are also a great live music venue.

The Babington Arms, Derby

Visited on Saturday - excellent range of real ales on, many local (Derby Brewing Company, Tring) and the ones we tried were in good nick. A pretty good Weatherspoons.

The Brunswick Inn, Derby

The Brunswick continues to maintain its reputation as one of Derby's premier Real Ale houses. On Sunday there were 14 Real Ales on, a mix of their own and guests and we tried most of them (!) and all were in tip top condition. Very friendly bar staff. Great interior, and open all day Sunday which is a bonus. Highly recommended.

The Waterfall, Derby

We visited the Waterfall on Sunday in desperation for lunch as the Brunswick only had limited sandwiches and the Alexandria wasn't doing food. It is a cavernous place and was almost empty. The one Real Ale (Everards Tiger I think) was OK but not great. The food was pretty average, but quick to arrive. Not a place I would visit again by choice.

Station Inn, Derby

We visited this pub twice over the weekend and each time were made so welcome. Owners Dave and Lynne are the perfect hosts, relaxed and happy to spend time having a chat. And the beer! What can we say - Bass in a jug straight from the cellar was probably the best I have ever had (and I used to live in Derby) and the Deuchars IPA was superb. A cracking pub, highly recommended, and we will make a beeline for it when we are next in the area.
