The Three Fishes, Mitton

You have to sit down to drink your beer which is ok but expensive. The food is very expensive for what it is. The place has absolutely no atmosphere. Go down the road to the Aspinall Arms for better food and better beer.

The Copy Nook Hotel, Bolton by Bowland

Always seems to be closed...

The Coach and Horses, Bolton by Bowland

I was served a cloudy pint of Timothy Taylor. I asked for it to be changed and got an even worse one of another ale.

I wrote later to complain. That I got no reply should point to avoiding the place. They just don't care!

The Farmers Boy, Kensworth

This should be a pleasant old pub, serving good Fullers.

However my last visit was wrecked by foul-mouthed customers and cloudy beer.

So, bye bye Boy.

The Priory, Dunstable

Got to say I agree with ronald. This place has gone right down, full of chavs and chavettes. I shan't be back...

The Old Farm Inn, Totternhoe

Things have changed. Paul, the landlord, seems to have lost interest in the place, the service has deteriorated, and the London Pride is now 2.70!!!!

The Grove Lock, Grove

Ok, if you like drinking and eating in bland "tasteful" surroundings with less character than my lounge. Fullers beer is well-presented, but pricey, as is the food. However, sitting outside by the canal in summer is brilliant.

The Roebuck, Leighton Buzzard

This was once a Benskins pub - ah, happy days.

It's ok. The beer's acceptable. Usually Irish patrons.

The Black Horse, Leighton Buzzard

I quite like this place. It's a bit rough, but only in a friendly sort of way. The beer's generally ok too.

I wouldn't go out of my way to visit, though...

The King Harry, St Albans

Not a bad place. I've had some agreeable ales there, though they're never top-notch - always slightly "dead". The food is acceptable, though pretty basic. The garden's good in the summer, but there's always the main road running alongside...

The Inn at Whitewell, Whitewell

Dave Tunnicliffe has been made Bar Manager (January 2005). Dave worked behind the bar at the Aspinall Arms in Mitton and ensuring that the choice of ales was both wide and superbly presented was his mission in life. He'll doubtless do a very good job at the Inn. Just don't start him talking about music - the man's an encyclopedia of knowledge of jazz, Chicago, Blues, pop...you name it, he'll talk it!!

My only reservation about the Inn is that the prices are high - 2.60 a pint for TT, for example. Still, you're paying for the surroundings, and the excellent service..

The Waddington Arms, Waddington

The 8 December report on the food is backed up by people I've talked with. HOWEVER - the new chef was quickly found out and sacked, and reports of his replacement are glowing.

On my recent visits I have noticed a slight diminution in the "body" of the beers - nothing wrong with colour or flavour, but lacking body slightly. This seems to have coincided with not having seen Richard, the boss, around.

The Lower Buck Inn, Waddington

This is a lovely place. Winter, there's a couple of log fires, and the place never seems packed out yet always popular. The beers are always well presented, especially Moorhouse's Black Cat Mild which is a true delight. Timothy Taylor's is a regular bitter.

Stag Inn, Mentmore

Oh dear, how are the mighty fallen. This place was once a mecca for those wanting very good food and good beer. My last visit saw me alone and cold in the bar at around 8 o/c. Nobody was eating in the restuarant. The flagstones looked dull and chilly. Tumbleweed drifted by in the draught....

Red Lion, Marsworth

I've always liked this place for a pint or two of first rate ales. There's also the minute saloon bar downstairs with the huge public one next to it, and the very large upstairs eating area. I ate there only once, many years ago, so any report would be irrelevant.

Sow and Pigs, Toddington

Pubs may come and go but the "Sow" goes on forever. The Greene King beer is always immaculate, and Roger gets more laid-back by the day.

It's the only place where someone (NOT me) sat and drank their ale and read the paper all through a large brown paper bag on their head. It's that kind of place. Not posh, but quirky and snug and inviting.
