Anchor Hotel, Tintern

The Anchor has now re-opened as a Free house and has been fully refurbished. The Timothy Taylors was spot on when I visted recently and the lunch was excellent too.

The Old Spot, Dursley

Visited this pub today specifically after reading the good reviews on this site.
Immediately felt welcomed by both staff and the warm and cheerful atmosphere. Eight or nine real ales on sale, tried the Old Ric and Hogs something or other. Both delicious, as were the meals. The pork and apple burger, served with apple sauce and a touch of Parmesan and salad, was so big the better half couldn't eat it all. Don't you love it when that happens and you have to finish it off.

Lewinnick Lodge, Newquay

Had my wedding reception here about a hundred years ago. It was a little bungalow guest house with a license in those days. Now it is considerably extended and is still a great place for dinner and beer overlooking Fistral Bay.
Delightful terrace, where you can sit out on a warm summers eve, should we ever get one, and enjoy the sunset. Well recommended.

Jacobs Ladder, Falmouth

Went to an enjoyable little Jazz/Acoustic guitar gig here recently. Friendly atmosphere, mainly students, but there's nothing wrong with students. I think I was one once! Beer was fine, no charge for entry to the music.

The Bell Hanger, Chepstow

It's certainly fascinatimg to follow the discussions between 'Mister X' and 'rotter', however they may both be missing the point here somewhat. As I see it 'Mister X' is an earnest real ale and good pub fan, and, presumably, 'rotter' is not that much different, other than being on opposite sides of the bar. Problem is, they may well both be on the same side of the same bar,ie Wetherspoons, before too long, if the current rate of closures caused by undercutting of prices, prohibitive business rates, and overwhelming local government bureaucracy continues.
A drive through Chepstow and surrounding villages the other evening told a shocking story of closures and pubs sporting 'To Let' signs.
I think in truth that we have the pubs we deserve. If we dont use them, we will lose them. 'Shimple' as the Meercat in the advert says.

The Pheasant, St Newlyn East

This is a rare gem of a true 'local' pub in a pleasant Cornish village. It is still very much the hub of the community and seves good food at reasonable prices and a fair selection of beers. One of those pubs where the cricket team wander in for a pint or two after a saturday match and where customers of all ages are to be found.
