The Crown, St Margarets

Not the most inspiring place to have a drink, however, just called in for a Kronenbourg and I wasn't aware that one of those typical lagers that we're all bored of seeing could taste so good! Maybe there's a change occuring.

St Margarets Tavern, St Margarets

Where do I start, this place has too many faults to list. It used to be a cracking place to drink and eat before the current Landlord tookover. The only thing going for it now is that it's near the station so you can get the hell out of there quickly and get down to some serious drinking elsewhere.

It's a shame that establishments like this can allow standards to slip, safe in the knowledge that there is always the safty net of regular custom due to a good location.

The Ailsa Tavern, Twickenham

This place feels like a proper pub. A varied selection of quality beers, very good food and extremely amenable and friendly staff. I guess this is what you get when you expand your pub search beyond the St Margarets boundary.

The Turks Head, St Margarets

This place is Ok, if not a little unispiring. The main problem I have is with the staff. Generally they are quite friendly, but it sometimes feels that the customers are secondary to their little "click". Also, beware of the menu, don't be fooled into thinking that what you have ordered is what you will get. Have you ever seen a cesar salad with red onion and disturbing absence of croutons!!

The Marble Hill, St Margarets

I've had to write this pub off since the refurb, mainly because the opening times are unpredictable at best. In it's previous guise, it was a reminder of what pubs used to be, a place where you could go for a relaxing lunchtime drink if you needed a break from the daily grind.

Ok, the place was a bit shabby and you only had to follow your nose to find the toilets, but these are the things that give a pubs character, and the Rising Sun had it in spades! There was also the most amazing roast on the menu, just 3.99 for the kind of portion that would make the St Margrets Tavern's eye's water. It's a shame the place has gone the same way as all the competion in the area.

The Crown, St Margarets

Decent Pub with a nice garden and friendly staff. Guiness is usually good and there is always a tempting choice of local ales. They have also introduced a more trimmed-down bar snack menu consisting of good quality doorstep sandwiches at realistic prices.

However, my enjoyment of all these positive elements is often impaired by the local Yummy Mummy brigade who seem to frequent the establisment. I've nothing against kids in pubs but I do believe there should be some sort of designated area for them. Sometimes, when walk in the main entrance to the bar, it resembles the starting grid of the push-chair grand prix, and there have been too many occassions where I feel obliged to drink-up before the nappy changing commences.
