The Bell and Crown, Canterbury

Popped in here for q quick couple of pints on bank holiday Monday a few days ago. All the cask ales were all local, they had Gadds No.3, Whitstable Bitter, Whitstable IPA and Hopdeamon Incubus. I tried the Gadds and the IPA, both on very good form.

Nice pub, also great for sitting outside and "people watching" on a sunny day.

Ye Olde White Horse, Aldwych

Great little pub tucked away in the backstreets around the LSE. When I visited today the four handpumps hosted Sharpe's Doom Bar, Harvey's Sussex Bitter, Tim Taylor's Landlord and Woodfords Wherry, a fine line up. My pint of Wherry was excellent and soon followed by another - I had intended only to have one but it was too nice to pass up the chance of a second. Recommended .

The Dolphin, Canterbury

A splendid pub. On my most recent visit, a Saturday lunchtime, I had a pint of Gadds No.3 and another of Gadds Seasider, both were very well kept. The food is not the cheapest around but is very good, particularly the daily specials. Staff are friendly, helpful and efficient and overall the place has a really nice atmosphere. I love the genuine logburning fire at this time of year too! Recommended

The O'Conor Don, Bond Street

Oh No! Was in the area today so thought I'd pop along for a Guinness. It's closed down and is being refurbished, soon to reopen as "the Conduit of Tyburn" or some such name - described as a "bar and dining room", so a poncy gastropub no doubt - like central London needs more of those. What a shame.

The Monument, Canterbury

Went here for lunch on Bank Holday Monday a few days ago. Not very busy but a nice atmosphere, no sign of the swearing etc reported by Andrew. Very friendly welcome from the efficient bar staff. Ales were Spitfire, Bishops Finger and Master Brew, I had a couple of pints of Spitfire in excellent condition. Food was good, reasonably priced, and portions were HUGE. I ordered Chicken and Ham Pie with Chips, was served a large dish that just about managed to contain the pie, and a huge pile of chips in a separate bowl. Very tasty but impossible (for me at least) to finish. My companions had Cod & Chips and Ham, Egg & Chips, both reported as very tasty and very filling. Recommended.

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street

Been to this pub many times over the years, but had food there for the first time today, for a birthday lunch. We were in the "Chop Room" to the left of the main entrance, and had Bangers & Mash, really tasty. Couple of pints of the draght stout went down very well too. A very successful lunch all round - recommended.

The Cork and Cheese Ale House, Southend on Sea

Just read in the local press that it's closing down - a great shame.

The Crosse Keys, Bank

I used to quite like this place as far as Wetehrspoons goes, it always has a wide range of ales on offer and though usually busy I always got served quickly. However the last two times I've been in there it wasn't all that busy yet I've ended up walking out in despair at ever getting served!

The Cross Keys, Hatfield Peverel

Very nice pub. Went there today with two friends on our motorbikes, based on the comment below. Had a very well kept London Pride, there was also Green King IPA on the pumps. The landlord and his wife were very frindly indeed, and are running a really nice little pub. The tidy beer garden looks like a real sun-trap, very attractive. We'll be back!

Adam and Eve, Westminster

This is a good pub. The landlady can appear a bit brusque, but I think that comes from her having to deal with so many foreign tourists who don't know the ropes when it comes to British pubs. The guest beers change regularly and are usually sufficiently unusual to be interesting.

The Bull, Bishopsgate

Arranged to meet some old friends there last night, I arrived to find that it has closed down! No indication whether it'll be re-opening as a pub or not.

The Fat Cat, Norwich

A fantastic pub for anyone who enjoys real ale - not to be missed
By the way, "DWI" is "Driving Whilst Intoxicated" - mostly American usage I believe

The Phoenix, Victoria

Changed beyond all recognition. It now proclaims itself as a "Pub and Eating House" with major emphasis on the food. It's now more like a trendy bistro that also happens to sell beer than a conventional pub. That said the ale was tasty and well kept, and the food looked good, if a bit self-consciously "stylish"

The Cork and Cheese Ale House, Southend on Sea

Tried it for the first time on Saturday lunchtime. Nethergate IPA and Ramsbury Gold were both excellent. Top marks.

The Hoop, Stock

Bitterly disappointed! This has been for years one of my all-time favourite pubs, but I went there recently and it was awful. The refurbishment has destroyed a lot of the character (the part by the stairs up to the new restaurant is like sitting in a barn) and the pint of Mighty Oak I was served was so sour I couldn't drink it. The atmosphere was grim too. I'll probably be back for the beer festival (haven't missed one for many years) but won't be going back otherwise, and that makes me sad.
