The Kings Head, Enfield

Good to have it back. It's fairly well (if fairly cheaply) refurbished, clientele seems ok (as long as you don't go in at 4 on a Monday afternoon, but then that goes for any pub) decent selection of ales, draughts and bottles, including the marvellous Desperados tequila-tinged beer, which is definitley loopy-juice in untrained hands.

Have mostly drunk XB on my initial re-visits. Seems in decent nick but some of the staff need training in how to pull a pint!

Overall, it's ok and life in Enfield is better with it than without. But it's nothing special and not worth an excursion.

The King Charles I, Kings Cross

Proper tiny old-skool boozer tucked away off Pentonville Road, handy for gigs at The Scala. Good selection of beers (incl Brodies, brewed down the road in Bow), order food in from local takeaways is a novel approach to pub catering and just exemplifies how unpretentious this place is.

A treat compared to some of the horror-shows around Kings X station. Will definitely be back!

The Magpie, Bishopsgate

A welcome relief from the horrors of Hamilton Hall, this is my favourite spot for a beer in the Liverpool St vicinity.

Good selection of beers in good condition. The place can get packed but service is fairly quick and if it's not raining there's plenty of space to stand outside on the semi-pedestrianised street.

Right next door to Bishopsgate cop shop and probably popular with coppers, so not the best venue for those intent on buying / selling dodgy wares... ;-)

Cowper Arms, Letty Green

Pleasant country pub, popular with cyclists and walkers in summer. Decent sized dining room and a varied menu makes this a good spot for a pub-dinner. Decent-sized garden for summer drinking, but the staff often forget to get out there to clear tables!

One criticism, the staff always address customers as "guys," making them sound like they're working at TGI Fridays. "Are you guys ready to order?" "What can I get you guys?" "Everything OK with your meals, guys?" "Penny for the guy, guys?" I may have made up that last one.

Cricketers, Enfield

Cricket theme is a little over-done but at least it's different to the usual kit-pub decor. McMullen beers in decent condition, clientele is mature and agreeable compared to local rival pubs. The service could be slicker both at the bar and in clearing / cleaning tables but overall a decent pub. Recommended.

The Chamberlain Hotel, Aldgate

As others have said, good beer, clean bar. Not tried the food. The best thing about this pub is it never seems to get rammed so while the wannabe city boys and girls are getting fuelled up on Wife-beaters and Bacardi Bruizers at Mary Janes or Bar 38 you can get quick service, a seat and convivial surroundings at the Chamberlain! God I'm sounding like an old geezer now!

Careful on the stairs to the loo if you've had a few...

Ye Three Lords, Aldgate

Decent old-skool boozer with reasonably good Youngs beer.

Jukebox is too loud, especially when the eejits at the end of the bar are entertaining themselves by repeatedly selecting cheesy-listening hits from Tom Jones etc.

Goodman's Field, Whitechapel

Dreadful.

A decent-looking pub utterly spoiled by poorly-kept beer and rude, miserable, inept service.

French House, Soho

Maybe a bit too popular for it's own good these days but an absolute gem when not too busy. Who needs pints of fighting-juice when you can have bottles of breton cider or Leffe brune? I like to pop in for a post-prandial brandy & coffee while waiting for the hordes to clear from the tube station.

Pretentious, moi?

De Hems, Soho

Pretty good to have survived while all around have been turned into kit-pubs. Good beer, good tunes (if you like loud, and I like loud), who cares if the food ain't all that - you're in Chinatown FFS!

Only downside - it can get very, very rammed.

The Ship, Soho

Best pub in Soho by a country mile. Well-kept Fullers beer, great tunes, cool-but-welcoming staff, nice mix of regulars, just-passing-thru's and shell-shocked tourists!

Don't go changin'...

The Hop Poles, Enfield

Of course they show Spurs! This is Enfield, not Plumstead. COYS!

The Five Horseshoes, Little Berkhamsted

Plot lost in Little Berko.

This place is now trying too hard to be a restaurant instead of a pub that sells good food. All the blackboards of menu offerings have gone, as has the bar-snack menu of baguettes, "hot hobs", etc.

Nothing at all wrong with the food, beer and wine - they just need to go back to being a PUB!
